Discovering Incredible OFF THE BEATEN PATH China

Zhaoxing is the largest Dong village in China. It sits in Guizhou province, close to the border of Guangxi. This is rice country. The incredibly beautiful rice terraces decorate the outer edges of the village. It's a tourist attraction, but it still feels very off the beaten path. Just a couple train stops east and you'll be in Guilin - one of the most popular places for tourism in China. I didn't know much about Zhaoxing when I decided to go there, but I knew I wanted to avoid the heavily visited area of Guilin. Zhaoxing fit exactly what I was looking for.
The Dong people make up a very small percentage of China. There are about 3 million of them. Their culture is very unique and I really enjoyed witnessing aspects of it. The highlights include seeing them farm the rice fields, listening to them sing, and trying their food.
Like I said earlier, this is rice country and the rice I ate in Zhaoxing was some of the best rice I've ever had. Their sticky rice cooked in bamboo and their special you cha (oil tea) with puffed rice were delicious.
After traveling China for close to 2 weeks, this was my most peaceful stop. Zhaoxing is a great place to unwind and discovery a bit of China that most people in the world will never know about.

Yeah, definitely. And I think most tourists blow in and out in a day. Definitely easy to find a corner of town where you won't see a single tourist.

Very interesting. The dish with the tea broth and grain/nuts etc I'd like to try. On the music note: yes you use some unusual clips but I'm glad you don't use the (presumably free?) music other food bloggers use - you know the pulsing sound bite stuff that really grates!!! I hope that Beijing values the Dong people (and the many other minorities like the Uyghurs)....

Those terraced rice paddies look very green and peaceful, and I would expect the rice to be delicious. I hope that the medicinal properties of the tea-like dish have you feeling better very soon.

I know it's not for everyone, but I really can't stand that sappy music people usually put over footage like that. Or the traditional Chinese music. I was singing this song all day after editing this video. It's a jam.

@@itchyfeetonthecheap Ryan I've been in this business a long time and your music is just as important as your shot choice. A high octane beat overlay on a paddy field simply doesn't work unless there's action to match and you'd be better off just going ambient and using nothing at all FWIW.

I agree with Edward. Just as you get lost in the beauty of that Chinese village the music choice brings you back to the western world where stupid people making rubbish music are celebrated.
