Jersey is in the Channel Islands, just off the coast of northern France but they belong to the UK. Or do they? In fact, this is just one of the many mysteries of this beautiful little island that we attempt to uncover during our five night Cosmos Stay and Explore trip. There's so much to unpack and so much to discover we just had to make a video to try and convey our surprise at how much we fell in love with this island, it's quirky and unique features and it's horrific and harrowing journey through enforced occupation by the Nazis in World War Two. If you've never been, this little video journal will hopefully inspire you to find out more.

Thanks for this video, I lived in Jersey for 24 years and married a local girl. I loved living in Jersey and still have many friends on the Island and its been 7 years since my last visit. Jersey is a beautiful place and the restaurants are second to none and plenty to do if your into sport and water sports. We are retired and now live in Spain but will always have great memories of beautiful Jersey as it was a big part of our lives.

Loved visiting Jersey every year. Beautiful beaches, shops, and lots to do with the kids. Saying this the biggest down fall we experienced every time we travelled, especially on returning home was the rude, aggressive, airport security staff. I feel they really need to learn manners and take a much needed course in customer relations, considering it’s the tourism that helps keep the economy afloat.

shame you didn't get to go in the tunnel with turbot. I went in there once, its so cool. Its a tunnel that winds through the cliff. Its been completely flooded and there is a raised walkway in the middle. The baby turbot are also cute.

I visited Jersey in a 'former' life over 30 years ago, loved it. More recently we have been with P&O to Guernsey, the WW2 tunnels there are even more creepy, very damp, hobnail boot prints in the concrete! Excellent work as always, thank you.

Ah, a second question. I know you went on an organized tour, but it looks like there's ferry service from Poole to Jersey. That looks like it might be a more interesting way to get there. I may be a pilot, but I'm not a fan of airlines!!! David

Q1: I don't know. I assume from my limited knowledge Isle of Man is a 'different country' altogether, whereas The Channel Islands belong to the UK but have semi autonomous freedom to set their own laws, tax rates etc. Lucky them! :D

@visitwithus 2 жыл бұрын
Q2: Sure you can get a ferry. We nearly took our car over but decided that it was cheaper and obviously quicker to fly. It was OK - EasyJet A320 - no hassle. Cosmos are offering free flights as we speak, but normally it's a case of get there how you prefer. :)

Jersey technically has the exact same status as IOM, as a "Crown Dependency". Any differences are really just cultural and historical due to the proximity of the Channel Islands to France and to each other. In reality there is no real geopolitical grouping of the "Channel Islands", Jersey and Guernsey are both distinct jurisdictions from one another, as with IOM. Although Jersey and Guernsey do tend to mimic each other in terms of governance hence why they may have similar political systems that differ from IOM, but they all make their own laws. Their Crown Dependency status in respect of their relationship to the UK is the same. As for the boat from Poole to Jersey, it isnt anything special or interesting, just a bog standard ferry. The ferry operator, Condor, aren't great. The crossing from Poole is typically around 5 hours (the "fast ferry") and you have the "slow ferry" from Portsmouth at around 10 hours. I personally prefer the Portsmouth ferry as it means not having to go to Poole. The slow ferry is also generally a nicer, smoother ferry (the ever-realiable, beloved Clipper) with better on board services, and often less crowded. There isn't much to see out the window on the ferry although sometimes you do get dolphins swimming alongside. Be warned, if you get seasick, the Channel has some pretty rough seas. The worst I've experienced resulted in even the Captain apparently becoming queasy and all the wine bottles in the bar smashing. If, like me, you aren't comfortable around sick people, you can pay an extra £120 on the slow ferry and get your own cabin. If you really want to experience Jersey's seas, there are various boat trips you can book from the island, some visit nearby reefs and mini islands, provide fishing trips or wildlife spotting (we have good sea life and very good bird life). There is also a ferry service operating between the Channel Islands themselves, great for a visit to Sark, Guernsey, Alderney or Herm. I'd recommend just flying to get from England to Jersey though, much much cheaper and quicker. I used to exclusively travel between here and England by ferry as I have a fear of flying, however the 35 min flight turned out to be pretty manageable, cruising at most for 15 mins before the descent.

@visitwithus

If you want to be in the centre of everything and have easy access to most places on the island then St Helier is great. If you want more of a beach vibe then St Brelade is beautiful and La Roque is also pretty. 👍

historical note: The German's always claimed the Gestapo were never on Jersey. Technically corect. As the Island was a Festung, Fortress, it came under Military Control. The Gestapo were a civillian organasation. The Military version, so the ones on Jersey were the Gehime Feldpolize, the Secret Feild Police, the military version. Those who had dealings with them considered the diffrences to be minor. In the Undrground hospital, be aware , you are walking on bodies. There are many credible stories of the forced labourous, from Europe and Russian POW's being dumped into the concrete of fortifications. Also 9 ar eknow to be killed when the unfinished tunnel collapsed.

Sorry, but I couldn't stick with this video because of the continual advertising for Cosmos and the hotel. And then the KZfaq ads kick in. It would have been nice to have had a summary of upcoming topics, then a delve into them to give more reason to keep watching. The video quality itself though is excellent. Nice and stable and sharp. And the edits don't result in shots that linger too long.

@@visitwithus Thanks for your reply. I came back and discovered that I'd watched up to just before the exploring really starts (about 7 mins in). This is much more like it! A package might not be everyone's cup of tea but you've shown the island well enough for anyone to get an idea of what to expect. Interesting contrasts: the underground hospital isn't for the faint-hearted, and is markedly different from, say, the vineyard visit. But that's the channel islands - refreshing coastal walks, German WWII fortifications appearing on them, then a well-appointed pub. Crammed. It's good you've made the video. Jersey hasn't appeared much or very well in KZfaq, hitherto. Many thanks!
