In this episode, we begin our Norwegian adventure and sail our liveaboard Rival 32 sailboat around the fjords and islands. We were treated to amazing sailing conditions, a wild time in the mountains and some big fish!

Hi guys, nice channel. The funny boat you see 14 minutes out in the episode is a typical result of rigid rules for miscellaneous fees and certificates. One being that there are more favorable rules for boats less than 15 meters, and thus Norwegians are maxing out the boats like this. 😂😅

Frying Mackerel inside.. best way to get a stinky cabin. We used to have a rule of not frying inside, the fat mist condenses on the ceiling

I think a cruise ship under a bridge would normally qualify as having "restricted maneuverability".

Authentic honest sailing vids here. Love the raw approach and lack of branding or shiny production value. One request would be to work out your audio to cut down on wind noise, although some of that is nice too. Cheers!

Viking anchor? Made in Scotland. What size. Kicking strap, unless you are a racer and wish to induce bend in the mast, a multi purchase is not required, just a line to stop a Chinese gybe. You can tighten it when you pull down on the main sheet. Well that’s my KISS tip for today.
@sailingmaalie
@sailingmaalie 6 ай бұрын
This is a Knox Anchor, 13kg. We have 50m 8mm chain, then 50m of rode attached to it. Yes, Scottish made 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 We use our Kicker every passage, to harden down the leech when off the wind. We are racers! Just to the next anchorage 🤣
@markthomasson5077
@markthomasson5077 6 ай бұрын
@@sailingmaalie thanks for the info. I am considering a Viking for my catamaran. At 8.5m she is much lighter than your boat, but perhaps more windage. They recommended at 9kg, think 13kg would be better. Any issues so far, have you been at anchor in a Gale yet?
@markthomasson5077

@@sailingmaalie …well who isn’t a racer when there are other boats about! I use a preventer, then sheet in, so the same effect. In fact my cat has no kicking strap. In fact I intend to fit a snap shackle to the main sheet so I can pull it directly down when fully out, of course only easy on a catamaran. I do have swept back stays, so a pain as I can’t let out the main to 90deg, which I found on my previous boat very useful to spill a gust.
@sailingmaalie

We can't fault it, v well priced and fantastic manufacture. So far we have rode a couple of 35knots and a 40 knots overnight in Portugal. Didn't budge an inch, although it was a long night on anchor watch!
@sailingmaalie
@sailingmaalie 6 ай бұрын
We also use a preventer when off the wind (~120° to dead run) in the Trades. Thankfully we have in line spreaders so we can crack off the main in a gust, and run quite deep on the wind 💨

The wild geology of the Norway coast is fantastic, but I'm dreaming of the same minus the people/buildings/roads/etc.. and that can only be Chilean Patagonia. Literally 1000+ anchorages await there.

How easy is it to find anchorages there? In my mind, there are water depths of 1,000's m everywhere but i guess there a few exceptions?
@sailingmaalie
@sailingmaalie 9 ай бұрын
Honestly so straightforward. Most anchorages are marked in Navionicd/chatting plotter. More detail in Norwegian cruising guide. Plus you can just follow your nose, if it looks like an anchorage, you cam sail over and check it out. We anchored in anything up to 20m depth, and sometim3s put a line ashore. Rarely, if ever shared an anchorage with another boat!

Is this route amateur friendly?
@sailingmaalie
@sailingmaalie 2 ай бұрын
The fjords are easy to navigate, with little tidal movement. As there are steep mountain peaks everywhere quite often the wind swirls and can come down heavily from above (katabatics), or turn 180° in no time at all. Its safe sailing, but keeps you on your toes! Norwegian boaters are some of the friendliest we have ever met, cargo ships included 👍🏼
