Learn how to tap pine trees and gather sap. Jack reveals the various specialty mixtures of pine sap for making tools, for making chewing gum, water sealants, and concrete.Jack puts togather a reuseable wooden torch and uses liquid pine sap from the pine tree he taps to burn it. With conservation in mind, learn how to use a fuel that burns hotter and brighter than wood.Jack teaches you how to be independant and how not to rely on oil ,gas, or propane as your primary camp fuel.

you can saturate the fungus with sap or cooking oil and burn it . however this burns the fuel faster and wrecks the entire fungus. slowly adding fuel conserves the fuel use and prolongs the life of the fungus wick. you can slice the fungus into thin strips and use sap or oil to make lamps in a non-flameable bowl or shallow tray. I use three small stones to stand the wick up and hold it in place.

the sap burns great in both forms. i tap the trees when natural seeps dont yeald the volume of my need, it is safe to tap the trees from three to five times depending on the size and species (balsm fir has sap blisters that form on the outer layer of bark , no taping nessesary)

from one pint to half a gallon maybe . each tree can vary, species too, the spruce drips with sap , white pine is another high volume producer of sap. turpentine is made from boiling pine sap, then condensing the vapor into a liquid (similar to distilling ) used as paint thinner. tree tapping was and is a major trade today. mainly maple and birch , but turpentine is still an important product. thousands of gallons are produced each year

I was wondering where you were(FL) I'm in South Jawja ;-) Those woods look very familiar! Pine is an amazing tree of life. There's an old medicine, Astyptodyne, which is derived from pine sap. Discovered when a fire hit a turpentine plant, 3 men burned by steam, one fell into a vat of something similar to the medicine. The other 2 suffered greatly, but the one that fell in the vat recovered with less pain. Antiseptic, Styptic(stops bleeding), Anodyne(stops pain). Awesome Stuff!

Hey Jack, I believe you can extract resin from the roots of pine trees by heating them. The hot sap becomes less viscous and leaks out of the roots to the bottom of the pan. This could be a more time efficient method of getting pitch. I don't know how i'd go about doing this in a survival situation though...

in florida there is a plant called the Creosote bush, the leaves are ovate and have a sticky feel to the touch. it is a great tick repelant. in PA i use leaves from the sweet gum or the black gum tree . lightly crush the leaves and rub on the skin, or tie the branch tips around your pantlegs. this will repell the ticks, also Canfor will do the same job but the sap can irritate the skin with direct exposure.

Most of my survival skills are more northern. Like the wild vegis, winter survival, myriad uses for birch, etc... Now I live in FL and know very little regarding surviving here. I cannot tell you how much I appreciate your vids bro. What part of FL you in? Those look like northern fl. woods. I'm in the Daytona area, and because I don't know alot about these parts, the woods suck, mostly palms of various sort. I'ma check your channel more often. Thanks for your effort and time bro.

So, how would those things work if you drilled a lot of small holes into the fungus and filled them with the pine sap, maybe even put in some small fungus wicks. Wouldn't that allow the torch to keep burning for a long time without having to add to them?

im pretty sure if you take a paint can and poke some holes in the bottom of it *in the center* with a nail. and put it on top of a can. like an empty can of beans, then fill up the paint gain with bark from the tree. even a dead tree. then build a fire around it and let it steep for a few hours. it creates a very flammable oil but make sure the paint can is sealed. just something to do when you have a camp fire going at night. there are vid's up on how to do it :D
