Because the video missed the draco standard of the Roman army. These were originally used by Sarmatians (as stated in the video) and Dacians and after the Roman conquest of Dacia these draco standards (basically a wind sock with dragon head on a pole) made their way into the Roman army where they soon got adopted by all cavalry units. By the 4th century they were common amongst the infantry too. You have to assume that the term draco came to mean a military unit and the name also became used for the leaders of military units. Of course such an image would inspire a lot of artistic license. Reptiles are found throughout the world and their dimensions are far more pleasing to the artist than that of a snake with its negative doctrinal context. A lizard with legs and wings is far more inspiring and pleading to the eye. Certainly, considering that the dark age artists were monks that would be the way to go.

There is one problem, the chineese dragon is associated with watter and rain and it is viewed as good. The explanation is simple. However with the greatest respect to the Chinese belief system, it is possible that the beliefs of the Chinese, not unlike the beliefs of South West Asia as well as the Nordic and European sector have evolved over the millenniums. The earliest images that I have seen regarding the Chinese dragon were a depiction of either a fiery snake circling the earth or a fiery snake moving through the atmosphere. I have read and absorbed the information given about these images by noted Western and Eastern scholars. It is possible that the deities which have gradually evolved from these initial images are a natural progression for people to find feasible answers to the sighting of these awesome events. But although this is my observation in no way do I mean any disrespect to any other cultures belief system. Correct me if I am wrong but China is a very large area and I am sure that not unlike the area of South West Asia there are many different tribes which will have very different beliefs about not only the dragon diety but also other deities which have evolved from natural sources. The fact that in South West Asia which also covers a huge geographical area has hundreds of different cultures which have many different animal deities may point to the possibility that the same may be true in China. Despite the interesting root which portrays the dragon being good luck and associated with water why are fierce Chinese fighters often portrayed as dragons?
