Perhaps it's a part of what makes us human, to explore the next frontier, to seek out new worlds... Today, we're excited to share a new planet discovered outside of our Solar System by the Cool Worlds Lab - HD 183579b. Join us to hear about the new strategy we developed to find this object, and why this is a particularly valuable planet discovery.

Not sure about other fields, but everyone in my graduating class (of 6) in biochemistry was involved in original research as an undergrad. It was a requirement. I made it into two published papers there. It's not like my university was amazing, either, so I don't think undergrads doing original research is at all rare.

I love this channel because it goes outside the box, explains so much more than the usual typical stuff that other shows do over and over again. It seems like other shows are all about the basics, for dummies who dont know anything about astronomy. but it gets to a point where you want to learn more- and this channel does just that! takes you beyond the usual information to show you how much more to space there really is. thank you cool worlds! youre the best.

I remember when I started to look into what direction I wanted to go, my older brother gave me some advice regarding astronomy, which was an area I was considering, as he'd done a minor on it. Basically, what he said is that the first few months are incredibly interesting because you learn about all kinds of stars and things like that, and after that it becomes rather boring numbers, physics, et cetera. I can't confirm, as I never did go into astronomy, but I've definitely never come across evidence to the contrary, and assuming it's true, well, a KZfaq channel like this is an amazing way to get the fun bits without the boring parts.

As the planet is Neptune like, why not nickname it Poseidon in keeping it in line with the sea god theme?
@RonBest
@RonBest 3 жыл бұрын
Surely a popular name like that have already been given to another exo-planet by now? :P But yeah it's a good name, and if it's not already taken it would fit well. Alternatively if the name is already taken this one could be named Poseidon II. (Actually i am not even sure how naming planets work, if the names are allowed to be used on more than one object or not, thus having more objects with the same names.)
@Scots_Diesel
@Scots_Diesel 3 жыл бұрын
If it's taken there's perhaps other "sea" based names such as in ancient Celtic Lir in Irish or Llyr in welsh or Njiord in Norse. Then we could look at other cultures, Egyptian, Myan, and other indigenous cultures for inspiration, and use these for similar "Neptune" like planets and go down a similar road with Jupiter (stormy) like planets and the same for the other planets, then that way we would have a system of naming the layman could understand and relate to.

Cheers to Skyler and Prof. Kipping on a discovery that makes our world bigger! (Or, actually making the universe smaller.) A name I’d like to nominate refers to the fact that the star of this system shares dimensions very similar to our own mother star, and the exoplanet’s composition suggests it formed much farther than its current proximity, meaning it must have navigated inward over time. The Latin compound, “Sobrinavum,” is a construction combining the word for cousin on the mother’s side (sobrina), + the root for many words that refer to navigation, like ship, sailing, journey, etc., (nav). I’ve always venerated the elegance of Latin that Copernicus, Linnaeus, Newton and others conferred on nomenclature in the sciences, and Sobrinavum continues that legacy, and capitalizes on Latin’s euphony.

I think the name of the planet should be a combination between Skyler's first or last name, as well as the donor's name who provides you with the most capital for this project. Just an idea. Loooove the channel. Your team makes every Cool Worlder feel like they are apart of the process, like we are bigger than ourselves. Keep it up Proffesor Kipping!

It must be super rewarding flat out discovering a new exoplanet. It's just crazy how many are out there waiting to be validated. And then somehow people are able to figure out its atmosphere composition and other stuff. It's fascinating stuff.

It's weird I know but I never thought of it this way until you just said it out loud that - it does almost seem like it is human instinct imprinted in our DNA to explore new land or space in this case. To just explore more. Always more, farther, anything unexplored- That probably sounds wierd that I've never thought of that before I know it seems weird to me that I'm just now realizing it. I think its something I've always took for granted instead of putting much thought into. If that makes any sense, it's kinda hard to put into words what I'm trying to say. Anyway another great video! I love your content/channel

I'm happy to be a paying supporter of this channel and your great content. I'd be interested to hear some theories about what could have caused this new Neptune-sized planet to migrate so near to its sun and then to stop before plunging into it. I'm guessing interaction with another large planet, could have started the process and that other planet may or may not still be in orbit. Do we think the detected planet's orbit is near-circular or could it be highly elliptical? If we think the planet is still blueish like Neptune, then perhaps a name like Cerulean might be nice, unless that name is already in use.
@CoolWorldsLab
@CoolWorldsLab 3 жыл бұрын
Cerulean is a wonderful name. Some speculation, perhaps the circumstellar disk dissipated when the planet reached its current orbit thus ceasing further migration. Of course how it go so deep in the first place is curious...

This is a really exciting discovery! Congratulations to you, Skyler and the whole Cool Worlds team: from personal experience i know that colleagues are valuable to bounce ideas off of or to get new ideas and help with a project. Not only is this exciting because you found such a close bright candidate with a sun-like parent star but because you showed how to use archival data to detect new planets. I imagine you might find a few more this way as TESS completes its survey of the southern and then the northern hemispheres. Could you comment on a few other properties of the system? How old is the parent star? Is it metal rich? How long do you think it took for the planet to move from its formation orbit to its current orbit? Is the orbit eccentric like a lot of exoplanets or nearly circular like the planets of our solar system? Thanks for sharing your research with the world at large (or at least this rocky planets audience 😁 ) Edit: So after skimming the paper I found some answers. The parent star was the subject of previous studies of sunlike stars. It is a similar age and similarly metal-rich to the sun. The planets orbital eccentricity is low at
