The twin sonic booms in Southern California indicate that space shuttle Discovery has broken the sound barrier and is on its final approach to Edwards Air Force Base outside Lancaster in the Antelope Valley.

Fun Fact! All supersonic aircraft leave double sonic booms, it’s just that with fighter jets being so small, the booms are very close together so it sounds like one.

Depends on the shape of the aircraft the blackbird did that because the shock cones that directed super sonic air into the engines and slowed it down to sub sonic speeds added an additonal pressure wave just aft of the pressure wave created by the nose the double delta wing design of the shuttle could have created a similar phenomenon

Sometimes for the Florida landings it passes over my house. I LOVE that sound. I'm gonna miss it when they retire the shuttle next year.

Wow this is indeed a relic. Love finding comments like these. It’s definitely quite a new phenomenon considering how long platforms like KZfaq have existed. I miss the shuttle and watching launches on TV with my dad were some of the greatest memories I have of him.

From Orlando, Florida with family in Brevard and this is the best sound I've heard on a KZfaq video. Only thing missing is my house & windows didn't rumble. Thanks for bringing back good memories.

I heard it from time to time all the way in Hesperia CA, some 60 miles away. Sounded like an Earthquake at first. Scared the shit out of me.

We heard that sound a week ago in Pensacola when the SpaceX capsule returned to earth. We had no warning. My dog is still traumatized. 😂

The booms were closer together when it used to fly over Orlando. Maybe it was going faster at that location?

All aircraft actually produce two sonic booms. The nose and the tail act as seperate compression areas. Normally it is heard as one continues sonic boom. You likely heard a squadron of fighter aircraft.

been up all night listinibg to these double booms over my area. they sound like this but not as fast and Much much deeper. nobody in my area knows what it was. but double booms are mostly from big objects entering the atmosphere at sonic levels. but i heard 6 booms. 2 in first hour 4 in the second. 3 objects or spacecraft. creeped out right now haha

No. A twin sonic boom is because of the design of the space shuttle. Not because of “big objects.” The “booms” you’re hearing sound like they are in your head. I recommend you to see a psychiatrist.
