Discovery: Daft Punk's Fresh Pop Odyssey...
The electronic music duo's magnus opus? Let's take a look!
follow my twitter:
➽ Twitter - / onlysmallbites
Main music is DK Dokuro - Passport.MID (Sega Genesis 90's remix)
Daft Punk High Life Sample:
• Daft Punk's High Life ...
Today, I will be going over Daft Punk, the French house electronic duo consisting of Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, and their second studio album Discovery. They created the album Homework before and Discovery was the next step. The album having the singles One More Time and Harder Better Faster Stronger, among others. Something About Us even having a music video. After a long science, the robots have abruptly decided to finish the robot journey with their retirement in a video titled "Epilogue". Random Access Memories was a great album as well. Daft Punk really had an amazing run with full albums and weird music video. This was a interesting one.
I do a lot of Daft Punk Instrumental AND hip hop Instrumentals, but this time I'm doing a music breakdown / discussion of sorts on Discovery: Daft Punk's Fresh Pop Odyssey
If this video does well to me, I can continue this.
Not review, video essay, music video, playlist, or anything like that. An onlysmallbites original video. This is more of a vlog / talk video with nice drawings / art

Just to make the sampling even crazier, they did this back in 2000. Its probably 10 times easier now in DAW. They must have an insane ear for what would make up a catchy tune.
@mgmg116
@mgmg116 3 жыл бұрын
Logic was around back then. In fact, they had access to MicroLogic (back when it was made/operated by Emagic) on a Mac. Of course, DAWs back then were in their infancy, and would not have had the tools nor the power they do today. Daft Punk ran their samples from vinyl to their EMU SP-1200, and then from that they would pitch up or down, and because the 1200 is utyer crap (in a good way) it always imparted an awesome toyish crunch to the sound (samplerate of like 32KHz, and bit-depth of 8 or 10, if you're into the specs) and then into their Akai sequencer where they manually arranged the samples, and then into the Mac to arrange the beats from their drum machines and sync them to the track, then they'd run the audio back out to their Mackie mixer. It's amazing how they did it back in the day

There is still a couple samples on Face To Face which are unknown, and these little bits might be bits they added themselves, although they really feel like something that was sampled. Oh well. To be a fly on the wall in the studio when they made this, to see how they did it all would be amazing.

I listen to discovery when it came out & doing my own mixing, it only take a sec or 2 of a piece of music & you can mix it to your own music!!!! Thanks to sharing those samples. Discovery to this day is on of my favorite album then Human After All then R.A.M. & Homework. I was hoping they would give us on more alive tour 2017 but when that didnt happen I felt a change. I felt it was to R.A.M. being so big main stream & all the attention they got & it overwhelmed them. As you can see they rarely showed there faces, so that showed they weren't in it for a popularity contest. Which I believe gave them there musical talent used to the fullest!!

I honestly never knew the Discovery album was used for the interstella 5555 movie until a few years ago just from browsing the internet, and I watched it and I enjoyed it. Also never knew they sampled such old songs for their music until now, it sounds cool. The more I think about it they could’ve maybe collaborated with the band Gorillaz and I would’ve loved to hear how their genres would mix honestly since nowadays Gorillaz has been collaborating with lots of musicians. Guess that’ll never happen now.

on the topic of sampling, I view it the same way I view remixing. A good sampling transforms the original samples to something different, while bad sampling ends up being the old song reposted. Even then, something like The Prodigy's 'Stand Up' is basically made from a single riff in Manfred Mann's 'One Way Glass' (from around 34 second mark). But it transforms it almost completely, from being just a nice tune to something you listen to in the morning to pump yourself up to actually do something.
@onlysmallbites
@onlysmallbites 3 жыл бұрын
Thats a real good way to look at it. Comparing it to remixing, you can do a bad remix job also, that happens. Actually transforming it to mean/come off as something else is hard work, which most people don't fully understand and you gotta make it sound good?! I agree with this right here. Any other cool sampling come to mind?
@DissedRedEngie
@DissedRedEngie 3 жыл бұрын
@@onlysmallbites well, prodigy made their career from sampling really, I don't really pay much attention myself to figuring out what is sampled and what is not. Because that's another thing about sampling, great sampling doesn't even make you think "was this sampled from another song?". But, just as anyone can make uninspired pop music (riding on recent trends), sampling can be done badly. Yes, inherently it does re use someone else's work, but we do give youtubers a pass on this reuploading this stuff anyways. So I don't see why actual transformative media is bad.

Remix albums are always going to be "weird" as the originating artist usually reaches out to the artists who collaborate and submit their works individually. If there is enough demand, they will compile them on a remix album. It is by no means a traditional studio album. The Discovery remix album, called Daft Club, was released in 2003. However the songs themselves were made available individually once a month as a free download if you registered the card that came with the original studio release of Discovery for the 2 years preceding the release of Daft Club
