I fell in love with the Lancaster after building an Airfix one in the 70s as a kid. I was fortunate enough to take my dad on a taxi ride in Just Jane in 2010. We were lucky to have an ex pilot who flew them during the war as well. As we taxied around we were at 2,200rpm..everything was vibrating. The old RAF guy explained that take off power was 2,500rpm with an overboost of 2,800rpm available - I can't imagine what that was like as during wartime these aircraft would be loaded way beyond their peacetime limits. I'll always be in awe of those quiet heroes who flew these aircraft, until 1944 the RAF was the only way we had at hitting back at the Nazis and the fact that these men flew night after night when statistically the odds of them completing a tour of 30 ops were negative is beyond my comprehension. Lest we forget.

Myself an my Dad went for my 40th birthday in 2010. I had a taxi ride an my Dad got to come on-board afterwards. Was on board for well over an hour. Was an amazing an very humbling experience, the bravery an devotion to duty that those who served in Bomber Command showed is almost incomprehensible. Truly an amazing generation of people, I consider myself very blessed to have had Grandparents from said generation, they were people to truly respect an look up to an learn from. Thank you.

My dad joined up in June 1940, aged 18. RAF ground gunner, then gunnery instructor, then aircrew- rear gunner on Liberators, Coastal Command flying out of RAF Aldergrove, N Ireland. Used to say very little about it except that most of the time he was scared. He wouldn't fly after the war, said he used all his luck up then.

There was a flying Lancaster in Northern Scotland in a private aircraft museum owned by a man named "Lord Strathallen " . This place was just outside of the town of Pirthshire Scotland . I've been there and seen it . The Lanc was purchased from a Canadian oil prospecting company and flown over to the UK in about 1980 .

It's television companies not doing their homework. There are worse cases on TV with German planes being shown in the footage as British or vice versa. I actually find it disrespectful to the men who where there be they British, American, German, Japanese or Russian. It's just laziness.

An Avro Lancaster Mk1 of the 106 Sqn RAF crashed behind my house in a field on the 26th of July 1942 at 02:05 AM. The plane was shot down by an German Bf 109 from the Nachtjagdgeschwader 1 the Bf 109 had taken of from Leeuwarden air base to intercept the the Lancaster. Behind my house the Lancaster was hit by the BF 109 and exploded mid-air. Debris from the plane landed scattered around the fields behind my house and the remnants of the plane crashed into a black peat bog close to my house. Four out of the 7 crewman died, the other 3 who survived the crash got captured by the Germans but survived the war. Three of the 4 casualties are buried close to my house, the remnants of the 4th casualty were never found. Sergeant (Flt. Engr.) Joseph John Cooper, 778188, RAF, 21 year Sergeant (W.Op./Air Gnr.) Maurice John Dembrey, RAF, 26 year Squadron Leader (Pilot) Francis Harold Robertson DFC, 42264, RAF, 27 year May they rest in peace. It had one major flaw how the hell do you escape when it’s going down? They had few survival chances when in a plane dropping like a brick when at the front trying to get to the back! The young boys who left home that never came back, who gave the ultimate sacrifice their lives for our freedoms! That today’s society in just coming 80years soon, don’t give these people the respect they deserve. Do not forget it wasn’t long a go, that every nation in Europe was in flames!
