What are you using between your platter and vinyl? Is it rubber, acrylic, glass, cork, felt or something else? Discuss the pros and cons of the various types of turntable mats (or slipmats, although those are used by DJs..).

Hi Mark. Very cool cork mats! I have a Pro-Ject cork one I use, but I still find static to be somewhat of an issue with it. I also have an acrylic platter for one of my turntables, which works great. No static, even in the dead of winter (which says something for Alberta, the driest place on earth in January, haha). Keep up the interesting videos. Cheers, Frank

Greetings, thanks for the vid. My goal was multi-fold. 1st I wanted to isolate the disc from as much mechanical feedback as possible, which meant that cork, acrylic, glass etc. were to solid to isolate. 2nd hurdle was to minimize static. The solution came in the form of a "Moo-Mat". The mat is made from calf hide, (I know not PETA-approved). The hair is nearly static-free, and what isn't can be treated simply with anti-static aerosol. the hair virtually isolates the disc from the turntable. I gained close to 30dB of quieting and static is non-existant. As an aside, my turntable, (TECHNICS SP-15 with a SONUS mk-IV laboratory standard tonearm and a Black Pearl cartridge) is installed in the rack along with much other gear. Isolating the entire turntable (base and plinth) from the cabinet was a challenge. Mechanical feedback was rampant, but I knew it would be when I began this project. I discovered that suspending the entire base on rawhide strings a quarter inch off the shelf, attached to the cross-members of the rack with "S" hooks and grommets in the braces fully isolated the turntable from ANY mechanical connection. A lot cheaper than magnetic piston supports. I knew I had to isolate from all solid structure. I chose to make the turntable a component of the whole - rather than a display piece, I have too many other vintage pieces on display already. I recommend the "Moo-Mat", they're especially attractive with the black and white patches going around and affordable when weighed against the alternatives.

I have my original Marantz rubber mat. I also have felt and cork. I recently switched to a rubberized cork mat and I love it. It has knocked down the hum to 0. Straight cork is my 2nd then rubber and lastly felt.

I'm using two different mats in two different turntables. One is made of a mixture of cork and rubber and the other one is made of leather. In addition I use record stabilizers (weights or clamps, both are OK) to avoid the record from slipping, because it will create static. I recommend to use stabilizers with any type of mat. Nice logo BTW.

Awesome mat. Ik ben nog zoekende wat voor mij het beste is. Ik heb nu rubber, maar denk er over om naar kurk te gaan. Die Funky Moose is te gek 👍

I use a Tonar Cork 'N Rubber mat on a Marantz 6150 turntable. The first few times i used this mat the records got a few bits of cork on them but after some time that problem is gone. The detail with this cork and rubber combined mat is much more detailed then with the former rubber mat. More instrumentation, more depth, etcetera. I also use a Hi-Stand record puck with this mat. The combination makes a world of difference...

I make leather items and just last night, made myself a 2.5mm thick vegtan leather slipmate. I have it flesh side up and what a difference. The felt mat slipped and also created loads of static. it would often come off with the vinyl. The leather mat is a massive upgrade and basically cost me nothing as I used an offcut.

Hi Mark, interesting video and channel. I use a Canadian made mat from a long while ago, which I don't know if its still around. Its a EON TriMat which is cork/thin acrylic middle/squishy rubber on bottom. works very well also there is no static at all. enjoy the music.......

my apologies for not reading through a bunch of comments as I normally would, and just jumping right into posting my own comment. I bought a Mr Corky cork and rubber mat. I like that it's not a full 12" which makes it easy to get a grip on an LP edge to remove it, Also, as funny as it sounds it has an intoxicating aroma! I just love opening the dust cover and catching the scent which triggers "it's time to enjoy some music" vibes. Yes I do get static upon lifting LPs. I honestly wonder and maybe you could do a test, if what we wear or stand on could make all the difference. Nylon textile carpet, socks, shirts, slacks....polyester I bet all make a difference. Maybe we all just need to be standing on tile while wearing all cotton or natural fibers :)

Hex Mat - yellow bird. Or origin live mat, also the amazing mulberry tree “washi” or “tapa tree” mat from Teac! Amazing mats. All of them are the best of all the types I’ve used. Over 30 kinds I own :/

I currently have a Teller Acryl glass platter with no mat and for me it works amazingly to eliminate static buildup. you can also use an ultrasonic record cleaner, though, for a good one, they're quite expensive. what is your opinion on the glass platter and the cleaner (depending on which you decide to get)? Thanks!
@FunkyMooseRecords

+Isaac Barton Glass seems like a good alternative, but does it dampen vibrations well enough? When you knock on a window, you'll hear the reverb from the knock. Wouldn't that be the same in a turntable platter? Usually a wet clean will also do the trick.

I have an acrylic platter but i notice that alot of records dont stay completely flat on it. I have a record puck but also alot of the time it is so heavy it makes my records dished. Now i just put a thin felt mat on the acrylic platter and problems solved
@FunkyMooseRecords
@FunkyMooseRecords 8 жыл бұрын
Yep, it really all depends on what you have. There are lots of combinations that make it all work. Glad you found your solution, but a felt mat, how does that fair with static?

+Funky Moose Records not too good. Have to use anti static to eliminate most of it

hey! I've got a new turntable that goes with a felt mat. The felt mat is slightly warped. When I spin it it looks like small "waves". Do you think it is an issue if it's not 100% flat. From your little video It seems that your high quality mat isn't 100% flat either.
@FunkyMooseRecords
@FunkyMooseRecords 7 жыл бұрын
Flatter is better as a general rule, but it depends on how much it waves. If you can her the wave, it's too much.. :)

I went for a deerhide leather, and it sticks to the records. no good..
@KillSanchezVol.1
@KillSanchezVol.1 8 жыл бұрын
Hi, if the leather mat "sticks" to the record then is not bad. That will keep the record away from any friction that can cause static. Of course is not a mat for scratching or djing. Give your leather mat a new try :-)

Can I make a slip mat out of felt? I just found a little classroom record player and there is a speed control knob that just touches the bottom of the records if they are warped.
@FunkyMooseRecords
@FunkyMooseRecords 8 жыл бұрын
+August Drobney How bad is the warp? If it touches the controls, the warp must be terrible.. Yes, you can make a mat out of felt or leather. Are you looking to raise the record so it doesn't touch the controls?

@FunkyMooseRecords
@FunkyMooseRecords 8 жыл бұрын
August Drobney That'll come with another issue: The alignment of your cartridge, but since you've found the record player, and you're playing warped records, I doubt you're looking for hifi-quality, correct?

I bought an Ion Select from best buy and it came with a little felt mat like the size of a 45. would that affect the sound on my 12" lp's ??? my records don't have a lot of volume. I have to turn my stero up so loud to where the speakers start hissing.
@FunkyMooseRecords
@FunkyMooseRecords 8 жыл бұрын
+RedPillorBluePill That player has a built-in pre-amp, so there might be a switch somewhere to activate the pre-amp. I had an old turntable where I had to lift the platter to flip the switch.Read up on "built in pre-amp" in the manual. As for the mat: that's weird. It should be at least 12" to cover the whole record. That said, the model you bought isn't exactly top-of-the-line. Some say it would be considered bottom of the barrel, so you can't really expect much from it.

+Funky Moose Records I figured that much. I plan on replacing with AT turntable. probably the lp-120. that seems to be the go to these days.

+RedPillorBluePill Yes, an LP-120, or a U-Turn Orbit are mostly considered to be the better budget tables. Either that, or do your research and find something on classifieds. That's how I pieced together my setup.

I have a Audio-Technica AT-LP120-USB (USB preamp removed) that unfortunately is too high for the tone arm to be level (adjusted all the way down). I was at first looking for dampening pads to quieten my recordings. I have the stock anti-static pad, but I bought a cork pad from RINGMAT. Overpriced for what it does, but it helped. The height adjustment on the turntable does not adjust down far enough still with both pads to make the tone arm level. More research and I bought the Herbie Foam Pad. Ringmat on bottom, anti-static pad in the middle, and the Herbie Pad on top. Now I have the tone arm level, and using a Rek-O-Kut disc stabilizer clamp makes for some great quiet recordings. www.vinyl2cdrescue.com/equipment.html facebook.com/Vinyl2CDRescue/

How is your spindle long enough for 3 mats? I have the same player and can barely us 2 mats to leave enough spindle for a weight.

I just ordered the Funk Firm Achromat Universal Record Mat from The Needle Doctor and it's supposed to be in tomorrow. This will replace my 3 mat combination. Read a lot of reviews on it and Brian at the Needle Doctor said it's the top of the line for dampening. It's a little pricey as you have to get the 1200 model at $175. The aluminum platter like the one on the Technics 1200 models have a lip on the top outer edge to compensate for. Not sure if I'll hear a huge difference, but I'm dying to test it out and do a comparison sound check!

I just tested my new Achromat Record Mat by recording and testing the first 90 seconds of More Than A Feeling by Boston. First I tested my 3 pads. Next I tested the Achromat by itself, but it left my tone arm nose down. Third test was with my Herbie Foam pad on platter with Achromat on top. This raised the tone arm back to level. 2nd test sounded good, but 3rd test was the best. The part I noticed was the hand clap section as it came through more clear. The bass guitar at the beginning was much more tight and didn't sound reverberated as in the 1st test. My conclusion it does what it says it'll do. It was pricey, but I'm happy with the improved sound quality.
