Brother, you hit the nail on "tutorials" and "hand holding". But I also think this happens on modern indie games too! They have not learn from retro games at all! On retro games the games where so well crafted that on the 1st stage the devs intentionally made you use all of your moves and most things were tought to you, but without actually TELLING you! You have to watch an old interview with Shigeru Miyamoto, he explains this very well. Also, modern "indie" pixel games have over used female characters all the time, which is ridiculous by now, it is too much.

Modern games try to make everything so epic and cinematic in scale. Sometimes I just want something simple so I play a lot of older titles. The greed from a lot of certain companies is ruining games too.

It almost feels personal... The way couch co-op was murdered.. I might be missing something, but why don't any (or at least many) modern games ever try to utilize couch co-op and online multi-player together? (Oh yeah, f*ckin' $$$) I actually am curious, and super frustrated by the efforts some games seem to have taken in order to rip out any kind of local co op or vs modes that aren't online. Getting together with friends, teaming up with annoying siblings, or beating the Zelda levels so your dad could finish off the boss (because the pressure was too high and that first spider boss was fricking scary;) Multiplayer gaming within armsreach can elecit gamings most intense emotions; develop friendships and/or rivalries, and so much more. This aspect of gaming was, and should, re-emerge as a premier cornertstone of gaming culture. Sometimes, it was a prized selling point of innumerable games, entire genres, and could even determine the kind of experience shared between console and consumer. Bring back bruised arms and bruised egos!

Sean....! DO YOU KNOW HOW RIGHT you are? Man, what is the purpose of having good friends, if you can't laugh and have adventures WITH THEM, even in the same house. Multiplayer is ESSENTIAL. Memories. Playing online with people I don't know is not fun.

When I really want to play a game that first things that I really want are the following: - A 5 GB console update - A 5 GB game update - A 5 hour wait because I'm installing a 50 GB game onto the hard drive - A 5 hour cut-scene that plays at the start of the game telling the story - A 5 hour tutorial explaining to me how to play the game

Haha, it's true. Beating a retro game - "Wow, you must be really good at that game" Beating a modern game - "Wow, you must have alot of free time on your hands" I agree, 2D sprites had way more detail to them and it took years for 3D polygons to come anywhere near that level of detail. Yes, having the full game on a cartridge/disc and knowing that you can unlock stuff if you meet certain requirements adds alot more replay value to it.

Great video. I compare video games and cars. NEW cars are too complex, too expensive, and too difficult to drive. Sometime a 1967 Mustang feels like a better car. Cars like video games have been a hobby and interest my entire life, im only 25 however but still. I feel the same about both these days, boring, dull and soulless. Yes, technically the modern car is a better car, better suspension system, tires, engine efficiency and everything, and yes the modern video game is also technically better, advanced graphics, advanced systems and everything. However, the older car and the older game have one very important thing in common, they are generally much more fun and satisfying.

@@buckroger6456 Switch cartridges use a different type of non-writable EEProm than DS and 3DS carts. It also doesn't help that save data is getting larger and larger and developers didn't want to waste space on a limited cartridge size for save data. Ok, nobody is going to agree with me, but My number 1 reason retro is better than modern: AA Batteries. I'm talking about handhelds, specifically the gameboy line (besides the micro). Here's why batteries are better than a charger: With batteries the handheld is independent of the charger. If you loose your charger your screwed. If your out in the middle of nowhere your screwed. If your traveling overseas and the outlets are different your screwed. Also, did you hear about the switch problem that if you don't charge your switch every 6 months it may never turn on ever again? GAMEBOY FOREVER!

I couldn’t agree more! Recently my PS4 died, so it’s the first time since 2014 I haven’t had a modern day console! I have to be honest, I feel far less stressed for NOT having one. I do personally believe there is a form of mind control with modern day consoles. They seem to give you just enough satisfaction (but not too much) to keep you coming back. A bit like a tub of Ben & Jerry’s, it offers you a little satisfaction for you to keep eating, but in no time the tub is finished. But if you get a really good ice cream, two scoops is enough to be completely satisfied. And this is how I feel about retro gaming. When you play and conquer Golden Axe or SoR, when the end credits roll, you feel like you’ve actually achieved something! AND… it’s only 1.5 - 2 hours of your life used up, rather than 11 years of GTA 5 + the stress and expense of having up to date content. Keep up the good work!

I took a long hiatus from video games around 2012 and only about a year ago got back into gaming. It was like being in a gaming coma and waking up to an environment that had completely changed. Also prices had gone into the stratosphere since I stopped gaming. Not sure what to get first, my intuition told me to get a modded Saturn and to collect games for it. I have to say now having the old tv, the special controllers (still no steering wheel or mission stick), and a little more than 60 games for it, I know I have made the right choice. There's enough nostalgia and familiarity because of games that were also on the original PlayStation (the console I had at the time) and there's so many more excellent titles I'd never even heard of! Also the variety of everything from shmups, fighting games, puzzle games, role-playing games, strategy games, platforming games, shooting games, adventure full-motion video games (some of which are still really good!), driving games and more really makes it stand out to me. If I had, for instance, gone with a modern console or even a different retro console I don't think my experience would've been as satisfying.

I agree so much with you. Not sure what I can add. In the 80s and 90s the game developers really had to make a as great ass possible "golden master" version of the game that gonna get copied to thousands and millions of copies. "This is it" so to say. For a few games they re-released it with a few minor adjustments. And region differences. For example, Zelda 2 is pretty different in Japan and America/Europe. When I try to think about my dedication to video games, I loved it a lot during NES and SNES but then I was no longer so interested. I skipped N64. In 2002 I bought GameCube, it felt like a big upgrade. I got Wii in late 2009 and that was thanks to New Super Mario Bros Wii. Skipped Wii U. Bought Switch in 2017. So this journey and when we add what you said in this video makes it VERY interesting! Late in SNES's lifespan and for N64 - what happened? We saw games like Starfox and much more - in 3D! But that "baby 3D" was not that great compared to the lovely 2D games with 2D sprites - just look at Zelda for SNES - that game looks sooooo good! And N64 never gave us these great looking 2D games! GameCube had way better 3D than N64. But I still felt: "give me the 2D games back!". Loved all these 2D side scrolling games for NES: Super Mario Bros 1-3 and the Mega Man games for example. So I think that the - at that time - so great 2D graphics was what I loved! Plus "just start the games and no updates". Maybe this thing is a good addition: I love the retro games thanks to the way more simple controllers! Just compare the NES controller and also SNES - with the controllers for PS and Xbox. And this is also probably a reason why I skipped N64 and Wii U. I always want a so simple controller as possible. So look at the new Steam Deck: buttons everywhere! Some people will love it but personally that is a nightmare for me. I cannot express by words how much I looooove NES Classic Mini! So many of the games that I had back in the days and got rid of. NES Classic Mini does not cover 100% of my loss of NES games but I got so many of the great games back plus a few games that I never had. I also have SNES Classic Mini and love it equal much! My love and passion for these Classic Mini consoles is the ultimate proof of how much I love these retro games! 😍

4:40 Retro Bird Hall of Fame moment. My daughter said my FF7 game looks too blocky then I brought up her Minecraft game. [mic drop] Physical media and longevity really are huge. It's the main reason I consider the 6th gen (PS2, XB, GC, DC) forever the last real video game consoles. I will say that legitimate expansions, where developers start *unplanned, new* development on a game's content a considerable length of time after its release (key point being, as a *function* of the game's success), I am all on-board with that, especially if it's released on physical media like MMORPG expansions. If it's not, you will just have to square with yourself that that cool new extra quest is just extra, not part of the original game, and thus you own the complete package by not owning it. I have the 6-part Star Wars set, it says on the box "the complete saga". I am square with that. Everything that has Disney's grubby fingerprints on it is just shitty DLC.

One of the reasons why I personally prefer retro games, is the 80s and 90s atmosphere in those games, I don't know if that's nostalgia or whatever. I also preferred that they were all offline games. Another thing is that, althought some had glitches, they would not have these slow downs, crashes, and some other very common bugs in modern games, and some glitches even became some type of cool feature in the game😝

Talking about game updates, I'd like to see a video about back in the day they did game revisions. Like A, B, or whatever. Where they needed to fix something, and so they'd do a revision and put that out. And so you had different versions of the same game floating around. I've not really seen any videos talking about this, as I'm not even sure what the differences there are for the games that have revisions. Will have to look that up.

Many of the reasons you outlined are why the only games i ever played were grindy stuff like MMORPGs , Monster Hunter, Dragon's Dogma, and modern fighting games like Tekken or Soul Calibur. The thing that i love is that they combine modern game design like proper saving, online multiplayer, tutorials, etc , with minimal story and time-wasting stuff, letting you focus on the gameplay. While i don't really like retro games (maybe because of my age, since i grew up mostly playing RTS games on the PC and then immediately got a PS2) , i can understand your points, i just wanted to point out that a lot of these can be found in some modern games, like those i outlined.

I like a balance of retro and modern. They both have have their value. Indie games also are great as many of them take the great things of retro games but sometimes add in welcomed QoL features. I love retro games due to the pick-and-play experience. They are usually easy to figure out and play, but tough to master. It is also fun to revisit games from your childhood. I find that a lot of 2D sprite-based games have aged really well, especially from the 16-bit generation. Though, I also love modern games as well. One major thing I enjoy in some modern games is online play. Being able to play with other people everywhere is a great feature! Of course, now many classic games have been retrofitted with online play, so this could be a moot point. 😅

Me? It's the lack of load/respawn times, on cartridge based games. The best retro games are like the retro game inspired, Super Meat Boy; "You died? Let's put you right back into the level's action, if you still have lives." I hate it, when you die, and are "spit" right into the overworld, so you have to reselect the level, to respawn.

Why I like Retro Games No Credit Cards needed to play older games. Seems all newer consoles you can't even play it right out of the box as you have to set up an account with a credit card. What? Once my son turns 18 i told him i will cancel his PS5 account that is attached to my credit card. That is when he realized all his digital games will be lost. You don't even own the games you buy online. it's just a more expensive way to rent longer. i told my son you better hope those servers will still have those games. My games i physically have will work no Server Needed!

Generally retro games were created/developed by companies & people who loved gaming and just wanted to create great games that are fun to play. More and more modern games feel uninspired and like their sole objective is to rake in as much money as possible over creating a great experience. Doesn’t apply to all games but its becoming more dominant.

Whoever says that 2D graphics are bad, they're damn idiots. Back in the 80's and 90's, 2D graphics were what we had and loved. I still love it to this day. These people shouldn't be speaking on this since they didn't grow up on them line I did. I came from a time when Super Mario Bros, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Donkey Kong graphics were the rage. That was in back then. The only game I played that came close to 3D graphics was Donkey Kong Country for SNES. Of course it makes me mad when I hear jerk offs say things about retro gaming that are insulting. They don't understand the times from which we came from and the games we loved that had those kinds of graphics.

More great stuff Retro Bird. "2D sprite work is bad graphics." face cringes, jaw clenches, breath through the anger, very funny (and true) I haven't tried too many modern games in the past 10 years but even before that the learning curve, tutorials, overall time commitment, etc are tiresome and it's so much fun to be able to start up a game, get right in and enjoy yourself whether you're playing for 15 minutes or 5 hours.

Are retro games better? In some ways yep. I think ability to jump in and out easily plus a focus on progress/gameplay...getting better through each level and at the end of the game pulling all those techniques together. As for visuals, long as it's got an 8-bit aesthetic or beyond I'm good. Being complete out the box w/o having to wait for a "Game of the Year" edition or something is a major advantage though. I find the best of both worlds is sometimes retro games on modern consoles, I'm currently playing through the original Mega Man games using the Legacy Collections and it's much easier than tracking down the carts and discs, then having to find a way to play them 😅. Great vid man 👍🏿

I believe that part of the problem with modern games is not necessarily a lack of creativity, but an increase in risk vs reward with ballooning budgets. Back in the day, even large games could be developed in less time and with smaller teams. So games came out faster and more often. They would also take bigger risks because the budget and development time allowed them to. If the risk didint pan out they likely had another game in the works most ready to go out and hopefully recover from it. Thankfully there are some bigger publishers doing interesting things here and there. The souls series while common place now, was a nice breath of fresh air when Demon Souls was first released. And Death Stranding while not everyone's cup of tea, is the type of AAA game I'd like to see more off. Something completely new and something I could see as a retro arcade game, managing your weight and delivering as many packages as possible etc.

5:59 Eh... actually, considering that the PS1 is also a retro console, there was some weird type of "DLC" content [Not sure if I should call it DLC] that was never available outside Japan due to poor sales. For example, the game Yu-Gi-Oh: Forbidden Memories [Known for being difficult and heavily unbalanced] has cards that are impossible to get unless you buy a peripheral called PocketStation.

What I like about retro games, or old games in general: If you revisit the place where you grew up, everything is just as different as you are. If you revisit an old game, everything is exactly as you left it. A game can be a limited portal into a past that the physical world has necessarily left behind. It is something unchanging against which you can measure your changing self, while connecting in some small way to the self you were a lifetime ago.

Something I liked about 2600 was the art. The game looked nothing like it of course, but you could look at the label and get a grasp on what the plot or idea was instantly. Story at a glance. It didn’t take 4 hours and voice actors to explain Berzerk. You are in a maze shooting robots. Okay, good enough for me. Most modern games have a very generic cover art. It’s... none of them stand out, for the most part. Not saying they are bad, but a good cover catches your eye and engages the imagination. I have several COD games and the cover are all pretty samey. Contrast that with say Castlevania. That’s a cool cover that caught my eye. Or Contra. Holy crap! I want to play this!

Modern games heavily rely on marketing and pre-release hype in order to sell well. Social media has contributed to the fact that "the internet moves so fast, you'll miss it if you blink". The current generation of mainstream gamers have also been conditioned to accept a lot of compromises that make no sense to us, the customer, and is only there to benefit the investors. I jumped off the console bandwagon with the PS3 because it became common practice for publishers to deliberately omit content from the game only for it to be added through a day-one patch, limited time pre-order exclusive, or as DLC. This was a huge slap in the face for legit customers who did not have constant internet connection so they had to wait until a complete edition was sold that included everything on the disc; although often times it only came with codes for the DLC which defeated the purpose. As you said in your video, all content was included on the cartridge. Even mid to late 90s PC games came with everything included and expansions weren't used to fill in the holes of a game but to compliment the existing content or extend your experience.

My gaming goal is to have a proficiency in an array of game types, two of which would be retro and more modern games. Not that I gotta be the best but I wanna look like I know what I'm doing. I've played the new Spider-Man game for years straight basically because I think it's the quintessential Spider-Man experience. I just start a new game over and over just because I get so much joy out of it. I beat the game twice before I even considered myself good at it. Since then I have become quite the master at it, but that's because when most modern gamers were moving onto other titles after beating it, I was spamming the new game+'s or even starting entirely fresh games on harder difficulties to really ramp up the challenge. So if someone tells me they beat Spider-Man, I don't think it necessarily means they're good. I would actually need to see how they play the game to evaluate if they are on level or better.

I think games that were pivotal in the transition from retro to modern were Metal Gear Solid, Devil May Cry and Resident Evil. I would say that things like Mario 64, and the like are basically just 3D versions of retro games even though most people would say that they aren't retro because they aren't 2D, but the definition of retro (style) isn't being 2d, it's just a common feature of retro and retro style games. It could be argued that even some ps2 games are retro style (all are retro in the literal sense if we are being pedantic and using certain definitions of the word retro, but again, I'm talking retro style as opposed to modern style) but this was the generation that made games become a viable cinematic media (something that began prior but wasn't fully realised). I love games that have immediacy, but I also like a great, gripping story. I like a reason for what I'm doing and I like to be immersed, I don't like to just be flicking hoops onto sticks because yay its fun to get a high score, I like to really be invested I a goal, whether its saving the Van Der Lindt gang in Red Dead Redemption 2 or finding out that the princess is in another castle.

In the old fighting games each game had its characters, to unlock them all you had to do was play. Example: Tekken 5. Today you buy a Tekken 7, for example and to get extra characters just buying it. Worse is that they add characters that have nothing to do with the game's universe (Akuma, Geese Howard, Noctis, Negan, etc). Don't think I don't like these characters on the contrary I played several SF and Snk games but why not bring old characters from the franchise itself? For me that spoils the originality. Understand: these are not a Mugen. Mortal Kombat is even worse in this regard, since when are Alien and Terminator MK fighters? It's all for the money, that's all.

What I like best about retro games is the learning curve. I do not have much free time to play video games currently in my life. There may be long periods of time in between play sessions. When I actually do get some free time to actually get to play, I want to actually ‘play.’ I don’t want to spend all of gaming time re-familiarizing myself with the complex mechanics of modern games, where I was in the story, and what my next objective is. Even though I do need to refamiliarize myself with the mechanics of retro games, it takes far less time. The controls are generally simpler, more intuitive, and I still have the muscle memory stored for most of these games from playing so much in my childhood. So it takes far less time to get comfortable with the controls again. At this point in my life, I just don’t have the actual time commitment to handle the learning curve of most modern games. When I have my rare time to play a game, I want to spend most of it actually ‘playing’ the game, not becoming familiar enough with the game again to be able to play it.

Agree with EVERYTHING you said. To add to your reasoning, the sounds that come from old consoles were WAY ahead of their time. Music you would hear on Xbox, Playstation, and modern Nintendo consoles would sound the same nowadays, so there's not much soundchip advantage there. However, one piece of music that would be ported onto the Genesis, Super Nintendo, NES, Commodore, and so much more would sound unique and more interesting. Each console had different and unique sounds to them that would be considered household. To bring it up a notch, Konami had their VRC6 chip with the Famicom, and when they made 'Castlevania Rondo of Blood' for the PC Engine, they utilized orchestral music for most of the game's soundtrack DESPITE IT BEING A FREAKING 16 BIT SYSTEM! This is just a small example, but other companies also did this. For those who call old consoles obsolete, just slap their ears straight with Castlevania 4's ost and kick them in the shin with Doom's (1993) revolutionary graphics and they'll be instantly stunned with amazement (obviously didn't mean literally).

When I first bought the last gen Xbox One, I was surprised after setting it up that I would have to wait like 2 hours for a the game, which I had on disc, to install. It was frustrating, and buying games for download or on disk alike was a slug, and often I would have to update them before I could play them. Honestly, though, I can't remember the last time this has been a problem. Maybe it's because I have so many installed games and I'm never playing the game that is being updated, or they update in the background while I'm asleep, or whatever, I don't seem to ever have to wait for updates. If I buy a new game, and I guess this is just a luxury I have of having so many games on a backlog, but I am not sitting there desperately waiting to play that new game, I know that I might get to it in a few months or more because I am still playing through games I bought in 2019 lol
