I have a very hard time stealing items from enemies in this game, but despite that, I have a few tricks up my sleeve (no, not cards and marbles). This video explains my method of doing so. My thief is the only one who even has any chance of stealing from enemies and this is required for getting the game's best equipment and items (like the Yoshitsuna, ultimus, omniscient staff, etc.). However, a 1% chance of getting means that I'll need dozens of attempts to get it. I average about about 120 turns to do it, with 50 being a lucky case (39.5% chance of having it by 50 turns) and 200+ being unlucky (86.6% chance of having it by this many turns). Even though the item god can easily defeat my thief in one hit, I still have no problem with that. By having someone who can handle the item god (my Laharl for example, considering the item god 2 can't scratch him) throw the thief into the base panel, you'll protect him. Using a wizard to heal the item god is also a necessity, due to interfering counter attacks. A better method is to trap the item god using pyramids (geo symbols) so that it can't move. You'll still have to throw the thief if the item god has long-range attacks, especially attack magic, but 10+ panels away is sufficient enough for that. The third method, the best of all, is to throw the item god onto an island, an area unreachable outside throwing, warp pyramid effects, or a hyperdrive. The second method seems to be the most likely case.
