@@chuck5667 If he entirely was truthful and it was true repentance God will forgive him if the victim doesn’t forgive the man who did this to her then she will not be forgiven by the lord Because what does scripture say “Then Peter came up and said to him, “Lord, how often will my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? As many as seven times?” Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you seven times, but seventy-seven times.” ‭‭Matthew‬ ‭18:21-22‬ ‭ I obey the Lord’s commands he is king over the earth He tells us what’s right because without him then what happened to this woman isn’t really wrong it’s just a matter of opinion Because without God there is no standard above us it’s our own personal standard.

However, I also believe that you need to show that you've changed from your ways in order to be forgiven, or at least made a good attempt to. The word of God indicates the laws and authorities as being allowed to exist for good providential reason by God, and although at times injustice can occur in flawed systems devised by flawed men, justice as fulfilled in this world when done correctly as is also often, is good, and a penetant person should seek to abide by justice in their own life, accepting the consequences of their actions and hopefully turning from their iniquity with help from the Lord.

Sadly with a religion as large as Christianity it is inherently easy to corrupt. The good messages are lost for spite and hatred, especially in the south. The idea of Christianity is good, but the whole was corrupted long ago, and this is a prime example. I am agnostic because of how inherently bad Christianity has become.

As a Christian, I’d like to explain the biblical concept of forgiveness. As Christians, we are called to forgive everything. Including this. Jesus made that abundantly clear. However, forgiveness does not mean you are free from consequences. From a biblical perspective, that “pastor” should be forgiven. However, he should also face punishment for his crimes. God is a God of mercy but he is also a God of justice.

Forgiving isn't bad, however you must take accountability, and punishment for them too. This Pastor should 100% go to jail, or whatever the punishment he gets will be, and then he can be forgiven. This isn't even taking into account the actual victim of the situation either, and that greatly saddens me.

coming from a baptist, adultery alone is enough to not only lose a position as pastor, but also get expelled from the church in particular. now the fact it was with a 16 year-old makes it all the bit worse. its a shame that this happened especially in a baptist church. we are better than this.

@@FrozenCulo Yeah, the Bible itself doesn't technically want you to believe all of it, since a lot of the laws established in the Old Testament were pretty much contradicted or someone effectively said "Yeah that doesn't apply anymore" in the New Testament. That certainly doesn't apply to all laws in the Old Testament, like the 10 Commandments which are pretty much the baseline of all laws Christians should follow, but many of them are just ignored nowadays. Tons of Christians get tattoos, religious or otherwise, even though the Old Testament has a law against having tattoos, because Jesus fulfilled all those laws and Christians don't have to follow those rules as such.

Whilst I'm not a Christian (I do believe in God tho) this just makes me feel bad for genuine Christians. Modern day Christians get so much hate because of the few bad actors. Most of these bad actors unfortunately end up also being the powerful talking heads and figures of the religion, so whatever they say/do most people from other religions/atheists will go on to make fun of the entire religion and community as well. From what I remember when I used to go to Church, everyone deserves forgiveness but that doesn't mean they can get away from the consequences. This pastor deserves to be behind bars.

Dehumanizing. It’s one thing to be physically assaulted with the intent to hurt you. It’s another with the intent to take advantage of you as a child. This is just my own opinion, and I have no problem with religion as a whole, mind you, but I became an atheist for reasons such as this. Unfortunately, religion, something that is supposed to bring people together and keep faith and order in the world, enables some people to commit horrific crimes and disguise to with excuses to cover it up and use the right to forgiveness to make it seem okay. I despise people like that. I’m glad that the people of the church, at the very least, saw how horrible this man was for committing such a crime with a child, even though he was forgiven for adultery as is. I find a lot of media does this thing where little girls as young as 13 are called 13-year-old women which hearing the word women makes it seem like that underage little girl should’ve known better when in fact she’s a child and was probably groomed. And it makes people a lot less sympathetic and easier to victim blame because everybody’s referring these little girls that are under age as women. Women are adults, And hearing it over kid or girls seem like they should have a perceived maturity that makes it their fault. The English language most languages in fact have Words to distinguish between an adult and underage female. So many KZfaqrs also Do it because they’re citing sources and directly quoting. But it makes my skin crawl hearing people call little girls women.

To me i always saw confession as " get out of jail card " that anyone can use to comfort themselves to thinking they're still a good person that deserves to go to heaven. If you truly believe in the words of the Bible, what Christians do or don't do should be irrelevant to the existence of God. Not trying to push you one way or the other, just show this perspective. People have always used religion to justify horrible acts. And typically you'll end up as either the victim or aggressor purely based on your beliefs. The Jewish have the most obvious example of this, yet their persecutors we're Christian as well. I find it helps if you stop looking at the Bible like a magical representation of god's word, and more like the writings a congregation of men chose to have meaning, and decided perfectly described their religion.

Matthew 21-23“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’

I read the Bible daily. My greatest friends aren’t Christian, and that’s ok. I couldn’t ask for better friends, tbh. I live a mundane, normal yet Christian life. So funny story, something like this just happened at my old church back in April, our pastor pretended he was going to retired because he committed adultery (funnily enough 20 years ago), and so they brought in our state bishop to relieve him of his duties. Everyone in our church was forgiving and accepting of him, and his wife had forgiven him ages ago. We even had a petition to bring him back as our pastor. We all found out 2 weeks later in May, that his mistress was a 17 year old girl. My fellow church members forgave him, and it’s a reason why I no longer support or believe in the church.

I still want to speak about what I learned growing up; If somebody apologizes, they are not owed forgiveness. I feel that is completely selfish, to *expect* a person to forgive your actions even if the regret does exist. The offender should be willing the carry that weight without scrambling for relief. Also, to seek forgiveness from outside the discretion of the party involved shows no remorse. This is a very harsh take and I believe things are better when people can forgive eachother... I have known Pastors who have been in jail for crimes, usually involving money, and have been invited back into the church to preach after turning their lives around. But I think this is inexcusable. He didn't just cheat on his wife, but abusing a child isn't something to be applauded. He shouldn't be banned from church, IMO, but he should 100% be in jail for what he did. Anyone who attempts to excuse the pastors actions and shame the victim using this as a reason is complicit and endorses it. Well said @Optimus, a church following can be discouraged by a sinful pastor very easily because they will think, "Well if even HE can't be sinless, then how can i?", and in thinking this they may turn away from Christ entirely due to this. By this man being a pastor in the first place without having repented before, he could in turn be inheriting someone else's hellfire by leading his congregation astray. If someone is to lead a congregation it is important they do not sin. You cannot fight the evil one with evil acts.

The reason he was so insistent on "she was 16, not 14!" was because Indiana is one of those US states where the age of consent is 16. Though usually that does not count for those who have been given power and authority over the 16-17-year-old minor, like a teacher of their school. Or, you know... a pastor of the minor's church.

I actually just googled this and surprisingly MOST states are 16 and some are 17 and just a few are actually 18

Just for your information, Optimus, that wasn’t actually a group hug (that’s okay that you didn’t know that! I’m assuming you may not have been raised in church, so don’t sweat that!). They were actually surrounding him to pray for him (and I assume the girl who was assaulted too?) and pray that he would repent and turn from his evil ways. That’s what I’m assuming. I wouldn’t necessarily take it as them having sympathy towards him, but maybe rather that God would deal with him.

What will never stop being shocking to me is in the morning you are having a service, preaching God’s word, in the ‘afternoon’ you are doing such a thing. I understand everyone in life is being tempted with bad but you my guy chose to be priest. You chose to live differently than everyone else, to be an example and ‘hope’ that certain way if life can be lived.

As a Christian myself they tell you to turn the other cheek and forgive one another but I don’t think you can be forgiven for this. In the LDS religion you’d be excommunicated and turned away from the church.
