Disney is going to DESTROY Fort Wilderness with their new plans!!

In today's video I make my way to Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground to discuss the recent news from Disney regarding them knocking down the existing cabins to make room for new, modern, smaller and energy efficient DVC cabins in 2024. I go on a bit of a rant in this video because this resort and especially the cabins mean so much to me as I have so many happy memories from this place. I also walk around the entire property to take in as much as I can before this huge transformation happens. Oh and I stop and get myself a good ole strawberry shortcake in a cup before leaving! Hey Dev! You're absolutely right about original Disney fans not liking change. The nostalgia many of us have going to Disney when we were kids makes us averse to any changes they make. However, I think we could stomach it better if their changes were good and not seeming to just cater to an elite group that can afford the higher prices of everything.

Agreed. When Walt Disney was still alive and Disneyland was new, he always approved of change. He wanted his Disney parks to continue changing and growing. As he once said, _"Disneyland will never be completed. It will continue to grow as long as there is imagination left in the world.”_ It's part of the traditional Disney spirit. However, the change Walt Disney wanted was through progress and growth, innovation, and going beyond with our imaginations to make the parks magical. But nowadays, the change that the Disney corporation has been making were more for profit and monopoly without much of the traditional magic in there. Yes, change is good, but it's unfortunate that the Disney higher-ups have been making the wrong kind of change. It's come to the point that there are less Disney fans that like change, and it's mainly because of the reputation Disney has built up with their "changes" from the past few years.

I absolutely agree with this. Also, Wilderness & Campgrounds are supposed to feel rustic. A nice refurb would’ve been better than a redo.

I wonder if Bob will cut the changing of the cabins in Fort Wilderness. Like he d d for the WDW Campus in Lake Nona. This is probably wistful thinking. I hope he does cut the changing of the cabins.

Sometimes I think Disney forgets that the reason they are able to charge so much for things that should really cost much less is the timeless nostalgia they kept for many decades. We were a Disney family through and through and went almost every year or two for almost 25 years. The changes they have made the last few years have been shocking and at least for my family the magic is gone and it is no longer on our radar for a vacation. 😭

I completely agree. It’s like Disney is trying to Un-Disney all the resorts. I like the idea of updating the inside of the cabins but I think the biggest mistake is making them a DVC resort. It genuinely feels like Disney doesn’t care anymore and you can get the magic back in the parks, but if the magic is going away in the whole resort…that’s not good.

Walt’s favorite area was the fort. My first trip to Disney, in 1975, I was 4, it was at the fort. I remember everything about it. I remember riding the train! We stayed so many times in the log cabins and now we go to the fort 2-3 times year in our RV…until recently. I feel like Disney doesn’t want the average resort/park goer anymore. The magic and memories are disappearing fast. What a horrible waste of materials in tearing down perfectly good cabins. What a sad ending to our memories. 😢

This is an excellent example of Disney no longer having any idea what makes them special and why they’re so beloved. They don’t understand why Fort Wilderness is such a charming, classic family resort. This will strip away its soul.

I booked some of my clients at Fort Wilderness cabins because her twins are Neuro divergent and had sensory issues and outbursts. She liked that the kids had a peaceful area to wind down after the parks, and not disturb neighbors when her son needed to be loud. It worked perfectly for them. Taking away an option like this is going to be difficult for many families.

They aren’t taking away the cabins, they are updating them. They are still cabins, and you have your own area, they will just be more modern. Kinda remind me of Tiny Houses. If they took them away, there wouldn’t be a resort. Not everyone camps!

@@annaburch3200 correct. Still cabins though. So you aren’t losing that type of space. And with any DVC, they still set aside so many for “paying” guests not just DVC members. So it will still be possible to get them. I’ve heard that Many DVC aren’t even close to selling out right now, and many non-DVC can get in.

@Brenda's Bites I disagree with you. The theme of Fort Wildernesa is suppose to be somewhere in the country. Like the log cabins say country. The DVC train car villas they are replacing the cabins with scream loudly city and not country

I love the cabins and I'm so upset that Disney is tearing them down. You didn't even mention the fact that as DVC the price of staying there will skyrocket for the cash paying customers.

And they are already pretty pricey... even more than most resort rooms, but some of us sucked it up to be able to have that rustic feel we could share with our kids and grandkids who only know urban life,

Yes, awful decision. It was one of our fav places to eat at. Great buffets. We loved going there then stroll around, visiting the barn and gift shop!

I 100% agree with what you said. I like fort wilderness because it’s not modern and sterilized, It nature at its best. I have fond family memories of being there. It will truly be a sad day when it’s gone and everyone that visits it refers to how it use to be.😢

We just returned from our first visit to Disney World. We stayed at the Fort Wilderness cabins for a week, and the resort was one of our favorite parts of our vacation. We loved escaping from the busy parks to the peace and tranquility of the resort! Found out about the DVC news on our last day and were kinda bummed out. Guess it was nice to get to experience Fort Wilderness before the changes.

I'm so sad about the cabins becoming DVC. My family has enjoyed staying there, especially since we have a dog and it's 5 of us, and it was always reasonable. I really loved the whole cabin experience, too.

I whole heartedly agree with you! We live in Asheville NC and that style of architecture is popping up all over, it’s the new trend. I’ve never stayed at FW but have always wanted to stay in the cabins. With the new changes probably will not ever, once it goes DVC the cost for non DVC will price me out for what it’s worth.

Highly agree with you on this….I definitely think Disney could use their resources elsewhere just like you said (ride maintenance, new attractions or even a 5TH PARK). I understand that some things could be modernized, but “vintage” Disney will always be preferred in our family. Thanks for the updates and tips!

I think disney has to look forward. We have nostalgia but kids today will create nostalgia about the new parks/ hotels. Disney isn't a museum, we world not all love staying in the original 70s rooms from poly or contemporary..we have our 90s & 2000s nostalgia, the generation before had the 70s & 80s nostalgia and now kids will have nostalgia for the 2020s. They have to keep moving forward

I always felt like I was staying inside Frontierland whenever I camped or ate at Ft Wilderness. I had no idea the new “cabins” were going to look like a modern glass pod from a big city. This new design totally ruins the immersion for me and the rustic country “wilderness” vibes of the campground. I think everything you mentioned is a completely valid concern, Dev. I hope Disney somehow changes the design for these cabins and rethinks how they’re updating this. 😢

I just discovered this video now but man, you are speaking my language! I can get behind making the cabins more energy efficient, but keep the aesthetic. The nostalgia from our childhoods is a HUGE part of the appeal of these parks.

i completely agree with you Dev that making it DVC will mean that non-DVC guests will have little or no chance of staying in the new cabins. I think that's terrible, and i say that as a DVC owner.

I’m an OG and love Fort Wilderness. Miss the Marshmallow Marsh experience and how the camping pads actually had privacy to them with the trees and brush. I miss the original Fort Wilderness.

I couldn’t agree with you more. I had the privilege of staying there when I was younger. Just like you stated , feels like your legit on a campground nowhere near Florida. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to modernize, however why take away from the point of it all. Makes no sense taking away the actual camping ⛺️experience!! But that’s Disney for you. This hurts… we loved the cabins when we stayed in them (2014, last time we visited sadly). I was hoping to return someday but every time I look at a Disney trip I just can’t do it. The money, the planning, the magic gone … universal has been our stop the last 2 years (5 trips so far). My mom was a huge Disney fan and she must be crying from heaven right now 😢

Yes. With what Disney has become it almost feels like a death in the family. I will never forget the fond memories of going there so many times, but I don't see us going back any time soon.

Progress is a good thing. Disney is always changing because new generations change.They are keeping up with us and our kids. They know they have to keep up or they'll get left behind... Look at the early years and the non diversity Disney had when they first opened compared to now. Change is always happening and Disney has to follow the change or they'll get left behind.

I agree wholeheartedly with you Dev! Those proposed (cabins?) are ugly. They don’t look like the “second to the Star and straight on till morning” vibe Disney has sold for 100 years. I sure wish there was a way they could understand that.

I just got back yesterday from a 3 night stay in the cabins at fort wilderness. It was so wonderful and really made me think of my childhood when my parents took us there as kids! That is such a shame Disney would ruin that experience for the future generations!! I am Disappointed in Disney

Both the current and new cabins are trailers, so it will be easy for Disney to switch them out. There are DVC members who have been requesting a space to bring their dogs along with them. I agree they should put the new “cabins” where Reflections was going to be built though. Maybe they plan on something else for that land?

Absolutely horrifying what Disney is doing…I agree they should put the DVC cabins where Reflections was going to be, but I guess it’s cheaper to put prefab cabins on the same foundations as the old cabins. This is just more dethemeing that Disney has been doing recently….have you seen the awful changes they’ve made at the Boardwalk? Thanks again Dev! Keep up the great work!

I was at Ft. Wilderness in March with my RV. I agree with you that replacing the rustic cabin is nuts. I also heard while there the Hoop De Do Review was being phased out.

I’m so heartbroken over this news. I grew up going to the cabins, one I skipped school and just hung out there I just love them so much. I’ve been wanting to get back there so badly since I’ve moved away. I guess I’ll have to make that trip sooner than I thought!

Hi Dev! I totally agree, the Reflections land is already cleared. That would be a perfect choice for the DVC shipping container cabins! We love the cabins at FW.

😭😭, I never got to stay there , I love resort hopping there , I loved the trails end , I guess they’re doing away with that one too….Also they’re supposed to announce the remodel of frontier land and they’re going to theme it to New Orleans to match the princess and the frog ride 😭😭😭. I’m so thankful for the memories I do have since my first trip in 2011 . I hope I always remember the nostalgia that the parks made you feel , Something that was apart of the fabric of America

That’s too bad. We’ve always wanted to do a family vacation staying at one of their cabins but I guess that’s not likely to happen now! I’m sure the cast members couldn’t tell you, even if they were saddened by the change. Since Disney employs them :)

At this point Disney seems like to much trouble. All the planning and money it honestly doesn’t even sound like fun to go to anymore. It makes me sad because Disney was always a bucket list item, but not so much anymore.

Wholeheartedly agree, Dev. I'm a non-regular having only been to Disney World a handful of times, but my first visit was as an adult and we stayed at the Fort Wilderness Cabins and it was fantastic. Since then I've stayed at Animal Kingdom Lodge, Pop Century, and Coronado springs but nothing compares to Fort Wilderness and the unique atmosphere of that resort and the cabins. I really hope they don't ruin that with this modernization, but it's hard to see how they won't. Thanks for the honest, and critical, thoughts on this and many other things happening at the parks and resorts!

My family stayed in the cabins and LOVED the whole experience. My mom has passed on, but it was always one of her fondest memories. It was a magical place of peace and quiet and the cabin was perfect for us. I'm sad that Disney doesn't show us OG more respect and puts weath above experience.

Honestly once they remodel all the resorts a lot of guest are just gonna stay in a Marriott or a Holiday Inn cause why pay more for something that looks the same as something off property that's when Disney is gonna say they made a mistake but for now we gonna have to go with together 💪 R.I.P Fort Wilderness Cabins having the best staycation with the cabins.

I am going to disagree with you about the cabins. On vacation, you want the feel of a cabin (they can do that with deco and stuff. But you want modern amenities (kurigs and usb ports). I have an rv and love camping but when spend the $ Disney wants on a cabin I don’t want dated. I am sure the cabins have been fixed by maintenance so many time that looking into a prebuilt pod are cheaper than fixing the old one. Plus if they are energy efficient and such, I am sure they will get a tax break. I wouldn’t be surprised if you will soon see ev stations at each cabin.

Just when I thought Disney couldn’t ruin anything else’s 😢 these just recently got renovated and are amazing ! The kill shot is making them dvc now the price will skyrocket and become unavailable to most people and impossible to book. Thanks for the video man ! Keep doing the great work!

Disney is making so many changes for sure.. I miss some old things. I have never stayed at this resort.. Been visiting Disney tho for 35 years. I remember going horse back riding there once. It is too bad they are going to tear down the cabins.. Should keep a few to remember 😃

I agree with making everything more earth friendly, but the update won't be like a camp resort. That's the beauty of Fort Wilderness. Wish you could keep the cabins and just update them

I’ve wondered as if they change the cabins probably they won’t be staying there or staying there….myself I did visit there before I fell in love and want to stay there but didn’t happened but hopefully that I can stay there cuz it’s fun place. ❤

I’ve never seen anyone show the fort wilderness souvenirs. I’ll have to do a visit. Great vlog. Guess the prices of the cabins is going to skyrocket.

It's confusing as to why the land clearing for the now canceled Relations resort was not the option for these DVC cabins. They missed the opportunity to not only fill that needed space, but would allow for more capacity.

Correction on DVC - Disney always holds a certain percentage of DVC rooms for cash guests. You can book these the same time as DVC home members or earlier. Or use a third party vendor to rent points from a DVC member for usually cheaper than Disney.

Have you seen what they have done??? I literally burst into tears after losing my husband who adored Fort Wilderness; our honeymoon 1975. I watched a couple videos that werent good like yours and i am being consoled by a friend. What you say about what they are doing speaks exactly how i feel. 😢😢😢😢😢

Nostalgia was one of Walt's greatest values in building Disney. Why are they moving so far away from that!?! It legitimately boggles my mind!!!!! At this point, I'll be bringing my kids to Universal for amusement park fun. Disney's nostalgia is what made them unique. It was like putting on your favorite cozy sweater. If they don't have that, they're just an overpriced farce of what a family vacation should be.

As far as the looks of the cabins, it wouldn't take much to put a log cabin skin on the new cabins (the parks have perfected that.) MY concern is it becoming DVC, and pricing families out of that option

I get the appeal of this place. It's a sanitized, and controlled "wilderness" experience. Hopefully there are other national or state parks nearby where you can get a more affordable, similar experience.
