Why are teen protagonists always trying to get into Ivy League schools? While this was a fluffy, predictable film, it still had a lot of heart, and I love the homages to 80's teen movies.

listen, i love milo manheim but watching ben interact with latoya is PAINFUL😭

it's so predictable, but there are so many little things that i absolutely LOVED! like the fact that she doesn't actually just give up her dream for him. the way he asked her before he touched her arm. the way ben and mandy were actually platonic friends the entire way through without there being some awkward "but i always loved you". the way mandy isn't jealous when graham's mum brings up the ex girlfriends (like, she does then joke about it after in the 'guess i have jessica etc to thank for that' but it didn't feel bitter, and i appreciate just the acknowledgment of, yes, chances are, someone you date will have dated before). that ben is just consistently an adorable mess. the way mandy is very embarassed by her parents, but doesn't go on to say anything mean about them. it's cringe and CHAOTIC. but it's also v cute

the way they actually followed the 80s theme for prom was absolute insane. no one actually dresses the theme. and that hurt me so much. like I was so embarrassed for them

I'm so glad the best friend wasn't the stereotypical 'gay best friend', and that 2 straight friends of opposite genders could be best friends and not make it weird. We never see that in movies. I never thought I'd say seeing 2 straight best friends of opposite genders is refreshing but it is tbh. Nothing against gay ppl of course, I am one I just mean I'm glad they removed the stigma that a platonic relationship can't happen. The dynamic was so great, I actually unironically loved this movie.

I LOVED how graham and mandy didn’t get back together until later on in the film when they were kinda moving on with their life. It’s not always the most realistic when they get back together 2 days later and how mandy and him went their separate ways and ended up finding each other again!

although i cringed at some parts the last scene had me in a chokehold i'm afraid also there's NO WAY *MILO MANHEIM* didn't pull in that school like HELLO?!

Why was the movie actually kinda good?

wow, lots of kudos to the writers for this movie. it has all the heart of the disney movies i used to love as well as a lot of modern sensibilities. they made a normalize asking for consent scene that didn't come off as weird or overly performative, they kept the best friends as friends, they didn't make the protagonist jealous of his ex girlfriends. i'm honestly just really impressed.

my personal headcanon is that graham actually sent the letter after she gave it back to him. just narratively I feel like that’s a much better resolution to that whole storyline than to say “oh turns out she didn’t need it after all and got into harvard anyway”. it’d also be a cool move on his part, to realize that she chose him over harvard knowing what that meant for her, and by giving him the letter she was putting her fate in his hands

The little moments between the main leads were so cute. So much chemistry. I wasn't going to watch it but after seeing clips on tiktok, I gave it a shot. It was pretty decent. So many great young actors.

I was so shocked that Disney made this, with all respect but Disney hasn't made a good movie like that in like ever, or at least a loooong time, it's chaotic and predictable, but in a good way, doesn't have those typical clichés like the main girl is supposed to never have kissed someone, or the love interest is supposed to never talk about exes or not ever liked someone in his life, cause in most movies the main character needs to be "the only exception", the best friends are platonic with 0 love interest in each other at any sides, love that , this one is a good kind of clichê, I'm really shocked this is a Disney movie 😅, surprisingly good
