THIS was the main reason why the film bombed at the box office. They spoiled a lot of stuff. It shows already that John Silver is the main antagonist, shows that Morph is on Jim Hawkins side and shows B.E.N(Bio Electronic Navigator)that we are not even meant to see until near the end of the film. And they didn't even say that the main focus of the film is that Jim and rest of the gang is trying to find Treasure Planet and get the money. It feels more like Silver already found the treasure and Jim is trying to get it back.

I remember seeing this commercial on Disney Channel and Nickelodeon back in 2002. Yikes...not only do they spoil the movie, but this also doesn't sell what kind of film Treasure Planet is AT ALL! It makes it look like a goofy space comedy, when in reality it was a heartfelt adventure film. I adore Treasure Planet, but with marketing like this, it's no wonder it bombed.

and they were surprised it flopped with the bad marketing campaign

Honestly every Disney movie is marketed like this, even back in the 90s.

Take an emotional and action packed movie and make a shitty Adam Sandler-esque trailer. No wonder this movie bombed

Alan Teeter that just shows they didn’t give two craps when promoting this movie and to add salt to an open wound they released it around the same opening weekend as Harry Potter and the chamber of secrets!!!!

What were they thinking!? It doesn't make sense! That's like releasing Atlantis: The Lost Empire THE SAME DAY as Avengers: Endgame. It doesn't matter if your marketing is good, they were doomed to fail.

Just realized that this movie and Eight Crazy Nights had the EXACT same release date (November 27th 2002)

@marianne mccrank What?! That's a load of BS! This movie is an underrated masterpiece while Eight Crazy Nights is nothing but a total Christmas piece of crap! When was the last time you even saw Treasure Planet?

@marianne mccrank Maybe you should re-watch Treasure Planet. It's so much better than you remember.

What the actual heck. Spoiling the ending in the previews like this. That’s why nobody went to see this gem, because why bother?

Musker and Clements wanted to make this movie since 1985/86, and Jeffrey Katzenberg constantly said "Make this film first and you can make your precious Treasure Island in Space", so "The Little Mermaid", "Aladdin", and "Hercules" were only made so that they could start working on their dream project. Even when Katzenberg had left Disney the executives were all like "Ok, Katzenberg apparently gave you permission, so make 'Treasure Planet' then. We're still going to sabotage it for you and highlight movies we actually care about" Businesses can be cruel!

i can see why no one watched this instead of trying to show a rich story comparing to the other movies that they were competing with at the time, they decided to show a commercial that is goofy and annoying
