I gotta ask, as someone who can /kinda/ understand the horror of being stuck in a place you aren't allowed in (but doesn't have submechanophobia)-- what makes being in the water with automated things particularly terrifying to you? My intent isn't to make fun of anyone, nor make a mockery of the fear, I just want to try and understand where it stems from. I imagine it can be several factors, and it's not the same for everyone?
@brianaallbright3525
@brianaallbright3525 3 жыл бұрын
@@mistahchad220 totally valid question. I have submechanophobia to a moderate degree, and honestly couldn’t tell you what about man made things underwater is scary. Even watching documentaries of sunken wrecks like the Titanic, I get shivers and have to turn away whenever they show things under the water. There’s just some irrational part of me that is absolutely terrified of it. And don’t get me wrong, I love swimming, and natural formations under water don’t scare me at all. It’s a weird thing, but I’m so happy it doesn’t keep me from swimming and stuff 😂
@Spider_Mike023
@Spider_Mike023 3 жыл бұрын
@@mistahchad220 can be diff for many people. For me it’s the sense of wrong essentially. I’m afraid of everything about water, oceans, sea creatures in general on top of automated things. It’s the idea of “I’m not made for this environment, it’s not my domain.” Just like birds rule the sky, sharks and fish rule the ocean, we humans have the land. I’m essentially free game to everything down there, and at a significant disadvantage being in water overall and refuse to go in water (unless up to knees-ish.) so with this fear on top of automated machines that could tower over me, overpower me with the sheer force of hydraulics and compressors, designs that can be purposefully frightening or just uncanny, and possible electricity mixed with water it just sends so many nope signals. Hard to describe honestly which is why a part of me is also very interested in these things like you lol. Idk if that helps but I tried a bit haha.

Yea, my discomfort stems more from the old, broken and/or decaying aspect of abandoned things more than the underwater part - though for some reason being underwater does make it more unsettling. I also have a thing about eyes that glow or are obscured (i.e. milky cataracts on zombies), so the Flotsam, Jetsam and Tick Tock ones really got to me because of that, and that angler fish can go f- itself. I can't say I have submechanophobia per se as most of the other submerged animatronics didn't bother me at all, it's just the ones with glowing eyes or hinted at being decayed that did.

@@bobthechunkychicken8025 tbh i totally get what youre saying and the hilarity of it but the absolute Dread and Unnerving feelings i got while seeing it in person is telling me "RUN BITCH". Like i couldn't even get close to the railing in front of it and i think my knees even started to shake getting vaguely near it To me the Horror is like i feel like its gonna fucking move, jump out of the water and attack me. Like I'm just thinking "whats under the water?! WHATS UNDER THE WATER?!?! WHATS HIDING UNDER THE FUCKING WATER???!!!!" Its the complete Terror of not knowing whats hiding under the murky water and fearing itll jump out and attack me. And now to share a personal story probably explaning my fear. I remember as a kid i went to a forest preserve and there was a fish tank installed in the wall of a building there that was extremely murky and filled with kelp and random garbage. I distinctly remember there being an old typewriter and a little tricycle in there. (It was there to get people to stop littering btw) And i was fucking TERRIFIED of it. Like i was terrified of a dark fish tank with an old typewriter and a metal tricycle! Theres a little suv sized pond near my house and I'm terrified of it cause its all green and algae infested i hate it
@the98liner
@the98liner 3 жыл бұрын
@@bobthechunkychicken8025 I don't think it's just the lego itself. It's how the rotting effect, murky water, and Brickley's big size and partially submerged body all come together to give that creepy feeling. But honestly, I think usually dark/murky waters are one of the biggest contributing factors in submechanophobia. I'd think that Brickley would be much less scary if he was displayed on land.

Is it weird that, as a young kid, the anglerfish was my favourite part of the movie? I ended up doing a presentation on them in the 3rd grade when most others did presentations on whales, dolphins, and more common (less freaky looking) fish. I still love them as an adult, but it certainly gave me a few weird looks as a kid, lol. :)

@@waffleauflauf4213 I mean I guess if I say an anglerfish in real life I wouldn't be as freaked out because from what I understand they are pretty small and I guess harmless to people? I remember there was a story, I think in a commentary track on the DVDs, that enough test audiences found the anglerfish so terrifying that the creators were worried they were going to have to remove the scene. But then a nerdy kid in one of the test audiences defended it by saying they shouldn't have to downplay how terrifying nature can be, so they got to leave it in. The “above ground”ish animatronics like flotsam and jetsam, tick tock and Ursula don’t scare me. The fire spirit I’m okay with too (maybe cause I never saw that irl). But the underwater troll and Brickly!!! Every time I walk by Brickly I am mildly unnerved! He’s definitely my base level of submechanophobia. The top would be the jaws ride sharks **shudders** I’m also afraid of paintings and mosaics that are in pools, probably related in some way. If there’s a mosaic dolphin or turtle, or some kind of animal painting I will not go swimming near by at all!

I remember at Disneyland in 2013, I didn’t want to ride Finding Nemo because of my submechanophobia but we didn’t know the fear had a name so my parents trivialized it by making sure we would just save the ride for last and hope I would have my issues dealt with by then... it was night when my parents forced me on the ride. I remember telling the attending CM that I was scared and she just smiled and said “Don’t worry, Bruce doesn’t bite!”... I was like “it’s not Bruce I’m afraid of...”. Lol 😂

flotsam and jetsam are absolutely awesome!! as characters they deserve so much more recognition and they definitely deserved to be higher up on this list. they’re terrifying and cool all at the same time!

I agree! They are my absolute favorite henchmen ever! And i dont know if disney has officially licensed plushies of them. (If they do i need them in my possession immediately) and they do deserve a lot more recognition. They are probably the most badass disney henchmen and it made me kinda sad when they died after watching the movie recently. I felt bad for ursula because jetsam and flotsam were the only companions she had out wherever she was.

When I was little, I was so terrified of Monstro in Storybookland that I never wanted to go into Fantasyland. I even remember seeing a picture of me from back then covering the right side of my face on the Dumbo ride so I didn’t lay my eyes on it.

I was already scared of the ride as a kid then one time at like 10 or 7 me and my grandma went on the ride as a little tradition because I was scared out of my mind of course the ride crashed right on the scene where it was showing the anglerfish I almost passed out for a whole minute we were looking at that monstrosity I will never go on that ride again

the number one reason i'm scared of these is because of the grime and buildup on the animationics/props/ride cars. idk why but it just kills me to look at it and completely activates my fight or flight when thinking about getting touched by it.
