As a collector in Australia, I am gutted. And it's sad when I talked to my friends about the news, they were shocked but then told me that they actually don't buy physical media releases anymore for years. My rude awakening to the end of an era. Makes me want to hug my small but cherished dvd, 4K and blu-ray collection.

What bothers me most about physical media going away is that with the current business model - where a film that does not get viewed very often is removed to save money - a lot of older or more obscure films will vanish. There will be no way to watch them.

It's really really bad. If you buy it physically you own it. Just look at the stories of ppl who have purchased media from streaming sites/shops & have had them ripped from them because of licensing issues. If you buy it digitally, it's not yours in perpetuity, it's in the small print. I don't think people realise this not to mention how costly all streaming sites are.

I think that streaming has truly destroyed the Art of film. Will movie theaters go out, the same way that video game systems made video arcades die? When a studio creates physical media, a studio must make sure that the product is of high-quality, in order to justify the production of a physical object. In conclusion, when all movies are streaming-only, the quality of our films will basically be big-budget million dollar KZfaq fan-films.

Long story short is that lots of people payed for digital books and in theory the owned them but the company broke, close the servers and your digital books went pouf pouf bye bye! Today we have like a new version of those libraries in which you pay a fee just like a streaming and somehow coexist just fine with physical books. My point is that there's still hope physical media and with time it will learn to coexist with streaming.

I just bought 4 movies (1 4k, 3 Blu-rays) this week (9 in total in the last month), when they come down in price to a point I feel they are worth it, I buy them. I still need to pick up a 4k player (or 2) but my blu-ray player works just fine for the blu-rays included with the 4K movies. If I can not buy movies in physical format (because they are not made or too expensive) & can't watch them from a physical format (cause I can't get a drive) & I can't find them on any legal service (because they were removed), then I would have to look else where, which I do not want to do, but I will if I have no other choice. They scream about people pirating their stuff... but then leave people no other choice but to pirate their stuff because legally they can't find it anywhere else. What they are doing now WILL drive people to pirate their stuff.

Disney has always been the worst about physical media though. The standard DVD of the Rocketeer that you can still buy new on amazon is the ancient non-anamorphic letterboxed widescreen version. I’m still a firm believer that physical media will make a triumphant return in the long run, because while these studios may be seeing success with their streaming services *now* I think there will be a point where once more physical media starts disappearing and they add all these new terms and conditions to their streaming services people will start to rebel and demand that they change, and that’s where I think physical media will come back, mainly because I think these studios will take notice of how a lot of people are now reminiscing about how they miss the old days of physical media and once that chatter becomes big enough they’ll go “Hey, let’s make more physical media” I think another reason will also be because with those people not being happy about everything being streaming it’ll encourage more people to partake in piracy which I’m sure these studios don’t want, I do think that upon that happening we could see a brand new physical media format that’s not Blu Ray or DVD be invented but it’ll still be physical media, so while some may laugh at me for having this theory I’m still sticking by it, I think this is how it’s gonna go

i know it sucks, but most consumers don't care about ownership or preservation i'm from méxico, it used to be one of the biggest markets of piracy in the world, (a very serious problem) but with the convenience and attractive prices of streaming, everybody ditched piracy and shifted to streaming, like netflix and spotify, in just a few years, streaming and digital storefronts killed both piracy and physical media It's an example that most people won't turn to bootlegs and piracy, they will subscribe to streaming, only collectors/enthusiasts will embrace bootlegs.

I think that the print on demand model which has allowed books that aren't popular enough for mass production and release to sell lucratively by printing a copy for those who request one would be the perfect model for a DVD comeback, never again would a company be able to make millions of copies of every movie and expect them to sell in stores the way they used to in the 2000s, but imagine a factory with enough blank DVDs for the interested segment of the population on standby on standby that can be instantly downloaded with whatever film the customer requests on the checkout.

If Disney would put out good quality discs (mainly referring to their poor Atmos tracks), maybe more collectors would buy their physical media. I’ve avoided most of their releases for a few years for this reason. It’s clear they don’t care much about their physical media customers.

Apart from the concerns regarding content ownership and the transformation of various life aspects into subscriptions, including potential irrecoverable deletion from platforms and preservation challenges, my primary reservation with digital media compared to DVDs/Blu-rays is centered around content organization and additional features. When it comes to DVDs, Blu-rays, and even the days of VHS, you could easily choose whether to watch the movie, delve into the extras, and selectively navigate through scene chapters, all presented visually. However, the situation with digital content and streaming is different. There's a lack of clear selection; everything is bundled within the total runtime. To access extras, deleted scenes, and more, you're forced to fast forward through the entire movie. This inconvenience is quite bothersome, and I fail to comprehend why no streaming service has adequately addressed this issue. Furthermore, Blu-rays and DVDs consistently appear to offer more supplementary content compared to streaming or digital platforms.

I love physical media always have but the last disc Disney film I bought was endgame nothing after that has been worth my money to buy on disc. I do still buy other film franchisees on disc. Sorry bought avatar the way of water on 4k disc that’s is a Disney product now isn’t it. I still buy games on disc if you don’t hold it you don’t own it.

Problem with games on disc (unless Nintendo) is that you don’t really own those either unless it’s an older console… you basically have the license on the disc to run it, but if ever they stopped supporting the game, your disc wouldn’t do anything on its own. At least in most cases it seems.

I have a love/hate with physical media. I love the quality. If you have a high end display or a serious audio system then it's noticeably better than streaming in both Audio and Video (probably more so with audio.) But I hate physical media, bc it sucks. I hate having all these discs and having to store them. I just wish that they would come up with a convenient way to get the same quality before physical media completely dies off.

@@Purge30KPayPigs I got into a media player & server combo a little over a year ago. Steep learning curve but I'm enjoying it a whole lot more than I expected and its game changer in regard to the issues I mentioned above. Still, if it's inevitable that physical media is going to die off then I really hope they find a way to deliver the same quality over stream or protected digital download. I feel like people who care about it are a small niche group and not enough to affect the market. Hopefully I'm wrong about that.

How does all of you watch cult/explotation movies only avaible on physical media and not on any streaming services? The physical media market have been exploding in the recent years, and it is even hard to catch up all of these new fantastic restorations releases of both new and older movies. Numbers of new manufactors of players just growing, although it is becoming more niche.

I am a huge physical media collector. The best digital alternative to physical media is Kaleidescape. It's really expensive sure, but purchases are downloaded to a Kaleidescape local server. After that, internet access is not required to watch content, and the A/V quality is equal to physical media (and sometimes surpasses it). So that's where I'm going exclusively when physical media is no longer available to me. I hope that terrible day is still far far away.
