Turning Red is actually pretty good, it's just doodoo compared to masterpieces like Puss In Boots: The Last Wish. Added the Mermaid from the Teenage Kraken cause I know this girl bad af in more ways than one.

The real kicker is that The Last Wish is actually 3 very good templates for how Disney could put great villains into their family trauma stories: 1) Have an antagonist that represents the abstract concept of the family trauma....or even have an antagonist that *is* the abstract concept of the family trauma (Death) 2) Have a sympathetic antagonist that is going through something somewhat related to the hero's issues (Goldilocks) 3) Have a hilariously unsympathetic and irredeemable villain that could never learn the lesson that the hero does (Jack Horner) Disney could be having its cake and eating it too, but they aren't because the writers aren't talented enough.

Yea but Disney has ALREADY done that ALOT. Like in lion king or Tangled. Disney is trying to show that not everything is as simple as black or white. Not everything is hero or villain l. They're trying to show how a lot of people may appear like villains but aren't etc. You have to remember that all over the world, all eyes are on Disney. No matter what they do they'll always be judged and they're always expected to create the next best thing. While also properly teaching children lessons their parents are too lazy to teach. Pixar isn't Disney and really started out making things not for kids but for fun and for young adults. They've since shifted to more child friendly content. But they have more of a drive to create things just because they can and they enjoy testing their limits. On top of that they're already used to massive losses with their movies so they're not afraid to create something bad.

The Last Wish didn't do anything different. They literally told The Hero's story and included the various rising character arcs. Puss and Boots returned to KNOWN storytelling where everyone else is just pushing crap around with a broom. It followed Christopher's Vogel's Writer's Journey to the T - The very same book Disney used to follow during the golden age of animation.
@antramp5494
@antramp5494 Жыл бұрын
@@midnari Experimentation doesn't always mean original. Hell, originality isn't even truly original. What they did in the last wish was experiment with aspects of already existing works, and trying to improve upon it while doing their own thing to it. Also, originality (At least for me) is where you take inspiration from other works and trying to improve it further and putting your own spin on it. Any artistic works that exist will always derive from some other work which inspired the creator, much like how any scientific breakthrough is built upon other people's scientific progress. But in short, experimentation and originality isn't really the same thing, nor did I say that everything they make is completely original. They just choose to have more freedom in their works.

Death VS Hades I think is the only important match up here, as everyone else is mortal and can die, but I'll have to give the slight edge to Hades, he has a potion that can turn immortals mortal and in the Disney universe, not even the Fates can kill immortals, which Hades is. Death can't even keep Puss dead, granted Death may have a combat advantage over Hades, but Hades could likely just regenerate if Death cuts off his limbs, seeing as he can just transform his body into smoke. If we count spinoffs then Disney wipes the floor with Dreamworks, that evil Stitch clone could just yeet death into another galaxy since it was stronger than base form stitch which has been calculated at multi-galaxy level and is capable of throwing massive objects out of the solar system, even if Death is immortal he can't beat that sheer level of power.

@@reasyrandom It'd be kinda funny to have Death (and maybe other great dreamworks baddies) teach future villains after PiB2, on how to be memorable or intimidating But it could also work in-universe: Chelsea is a mermaid/siren which in classic folklore are known to trick sailors, pirates, or other seamen into their deaths, so maybe after they've done their work Lobo would come and collect the souls of their victims. I don't mind the new Disney films because they're taking another direction for awareness but at the same time I want Disney to produce films like their old forgotten ones(e.g. Atlantis: the lost empire, Treasure Planet, Hunchback of Notre Dame). But ofc it will never happen, they're going to remake all the classics to live actions smh. EDIT: Oh wow. I never thought this comment would get this much likes but the replies below are a bit bothering. Skip to the end if you don't wanna read it all. Concern #1 If you think the new movies Disney produced ruined the quality of older films then that's a stretched. The old movies are held on a pedestal and each time a mid movie is reviewed from a subjective point of view they're always (old Disney movies) reminded as Tier movies. Nobody would say in a middle of watching Aristocrats, "Damn, Turning Red was shit so this movie is shit. Disney is making me lose my childhood coz this movie sucks." I admit I didn't like Turning Red. I understand the message it tried to convey but it's not the type of movie I wish to watch to comfort myself from a long day. Even as an Asian, it was just not for me. However, I don't throw the old movies into the trash because of a movie that I consider mid. That's just a you issue YOU gotta deal. I'm still going to enjoy the old Disney movies, I still have them in VHS and CDs ( yes I am that old) Concern #2 "Whilst DreamWorks is doing the opposite and making their old movies look better" Are you kidding me? Did it take you to watch Puss in boots: The last wish and A Parody of Arial as an eye opener? Boy gtfo, DreamWorks has always been winning from the start. Sinbad, Shrek, HTTYD, Kungfu panda, Rise of the Guardians, Megamind, and one of my all time favorite Prince of Egypt had been challenging Disney since. Remember that movie back in 2002? That movie Spirit: the stallion of Cimarron. Who would've thought a movie from a POV of a horse is badass. Saying that the recent movies were boosting those old movies gotta be disrespect. Because goddamn, it took you a parody of Ariel to say it's making the old DreamWorks movies look good? Booooyyy, that's just wrong. Don't ever say that. EVER. I love Disney and DreamWorks. But one thing I greatly respect DreamWorks for is the fact that it was created to spite Disney in the first place. Dream(W)orks TL;DR: DreamWorks is awesome. Period. Disney's old movies didn't deserve disrespect because of the new movies. Respect and acknowledge the differences, never bring each other down. But please Disney, stop making live actions. P. S. I hope DreamWorks will continue being creative and unpredictable. But please Disney, stop making live actions and bring back the magic. - Sincerely, a girl who's uncle used to work for Dreamworks and gave me a sketch of Shrek.

Having a smaller scale conflict is not an inherently bad thing. Turning Red explores how her relationship with her family is changing as she's getting older and creating an identity outside of her parents. The concert is the catalyst that conflict is centered around, the first time she's ever disagreed with her parents. Pixar's themes and storytelling are still there as long as you don't go in with a dismissive mindset.

I thought the villain was a twist villain from the 2010s, the worst kind, who gave the audience bait that she might be more than just a 1-dimensional manipulator but that was false hope. The movie could have been a lot better if Chelsea was more complex and had a genuine friendship with Ruby. It would have made any fight they had much more impactful.

@@achinthmurali5207 Man, I see your comments on every Ruby Gillman video and I can't believe you're still spamming this dumb critique. Chelsea manipulating Ruby doesn't make her a "twist villain" (or at least, not in the sense that someone like Hans was), there's signs in the film that she's bad news and doesn't have Ruby's interests at heart well before she actually reveals she's Nerissa. She's more like the Fairy Godmother. Also, if you had a "genuine friendship" with Ruby, what would they have even had a fight over? Dumbass.

Funny how everyone wasn't comparing DreamWorks and Disney as much before puss in Boots the last movie was released. Kinda show's how no one cares until you do something good.

I don't get why everyone's acting like that mermaid girl is even close to the same level as Lobo/Death, or even better than Disney villains. She's literally just a stereotypical popular girl
@reasyrandom
@reasyrandom Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I kinda like the idea of mermaids being the villains for once (because, that's actually accurate to the myths). But I don't find her interesting at all. She's just "Ariel, but mean!".

@@reasyrandom Yeah, though the only reason I think people are comparing her to Ariel is the red hair, which was a solid marketing movie on DreamWork’s part. But that’s about it, she’s just a popular mean girl cliche, the only people who’d find her intimidating or scary are people who are currently in grade school, which is the target demographic but anyone else isn’t gonna find it interesting.

@@charliemacsart bruhhh at least she's not that stupid as ariel was and by the way the one who created her was the same Artist who created ariel.. so what's your problem with that?.... And also haven't u find it cliche when that mermaid is supposed to be a bad guy not a good one who needs to be love or something like that even in the original story she doesn't have a happy ending because the guy she loves was in love with another woman.. and in the myths mermaids literally like to killed people.. 🤦 so tell me where's the real cliche one?

My Great Grandmother use to tell me Yoruba stories from her home in Africa. Why can’t we have an Anansi movie with Onini the Python and The Mmoboro Hornets and even GumBaby, Osebo the Leopard and Mmoatia the invisible fairy that he traps with GumBaby? Europe only has so many stories and seeing white, white and whiter kinda hurts sense you never see your own culture. AFRICA EXISTS! How about The magic tree or Mwindo or even the story of how Anansi, Nyame and his sons divided the moon?

Okay but why can't we have both ? Stories that focus on families and some with villains also we don't even know if the mermaid one will be good for all we know she could suck as a character or even the whole movie

I agree with you. Some movies are good with villains, some without them. It's completely unfair to assess a movie's quality based on villains alone, which is what most the DreamWorks fanbase is doing.
