It’s funny how role reversal seems to work with both Disney and Universal. While Disney struggles to expand or get anything done in Florida, they’re making more ambitious plans to expand in California and while Universal Hollywood is landlocked and can only do so much, they have a new lease on life with Epic Universe (and more) on the horizon.

Disney isn't going ahead in Florida because business is not good right now. The parks are doing well but Disney+ is bleeding money and they haven't exactly been killing it at the box office so lately. Their stock is at a five year low. Estimates for the new park were from ten to seventeen billion dollars. You don't borrow $15B when times are tough.

I think the space they have is plenty, Disney is just lazy about fixing things they can utilize the space but refuse to, Example tomorrowland has Star tours and Star Wars launch bay, starcade, where do you suppose that should go. Now sudden that land has 3 rides and a lot of blue sky ideas. As for the “3 park” they literally have no more room, the zoning permit won’t allow it, it’s something they are try to persuade the city to change. So far they failed twice.

I think it is smart that disney wants to invest in california. I mean in florida it seems that disney is waiting for a new governeur before taking risks. I don't mind if the 3. Park is small, because small parks tend to be better themed then bigger parks.

As someone who just came from Disneyland today, i think turning the toy story lot into a park or shopping is a horrible idea. the 3rd gate is exactly what Disney needs and what all the locals want. Disneyland resort would be like the master trilogy of Disney theme parks. You have the original disneyland with all the classic attractions this covers about up to the 80s. Then there is DCA which represents the early 90s era and early 2010s era. Then a new theme park to represent the current era of Disney imagineering. I think black panther and avatar would be great for a third gate and even that mountain coaster could be the big defining attraction. The princess area could be used as an area themed more for kids. All the blue sky ideas are there and they have the land for it. And that is only using up 9 acres so imagine what they could do with the other 60.
@AStageForTheKingdom
@AStageForTheKingdom Жыл бұрын
The problem is that a third park would probably take at least ten years to build from start to finish, and quite likely more when you factor in the entire process of environmental reviews, permits, lawsuits from local residents, etc. Look how long it has taken them for the new Downtown Disney expansion for example, and that's a far simpler project. Beyond that, the project would cost many billions, and that would present a tremendous financial risk for Disney, especially when they have no idea what things will be like in 10-15 years, or what will still be popular then, or even if they will still need a third park at that time in California. Also, a super impressive third park featuring the biggest and best of Disney brands and technologies would run a very serious risk of making the first two parks seem incredibly out-dated and boring by comparison. For example, how many kids would want to go do the current Fantasyland rides like Mr. Toad and Alice and Pinocchio, as opposed to going to a brand new park and riding a super impressive new Frozen or Tangled ride that's on par with what the parks in Asia are building these days. How many people would still want to ride Big Thunder Mountain or the Matterhorn or even Space Mountain when you could go to a new park and ride things like Tron or the new Guardians Of The Galaxy roller coaster? These potential issues are endless. If there is any lesson Disney should have learned from the cancellation of the Star Wars hotel, it's that they can't compete with themselves. They need to create complementary experiences, rather than competitive ones. Using the space across the street as expansion for the existing parks is probably their best bet. That would function more like Galaxy's Edge in the sense that it is separated from the rest of the park, accessed through a tunnel or bridge, but it's part of the park all the same and you don't have to choose between going there and going to the rest of the park in terms of ticket buying. This was smart, because Rise Of The Resistance makes the rest of the rides pale in comparison. An entire park on that level would destroy DCA, and likely seriously undermine Disneyland itself.

@@AStageForTheKingdom You actually make a really strong point with the quality of rides. And I agree DCA would NOT stand a chance. I think Disneyland has the strong legs as the park itself is a representation of all the 3 eras i mentioned. I think the reason Disneyland can heavily compete is because the rides there are simply timeless. A boat ride will never be outdated, a rollercoaster themed to a mountain will never be outdated. The rides at Disneyland are pure iconic original fun. But if Disney ever ended up building a 3rd gate they would absolutely have to pour billions into DCA to put it on a level where it would still be worth visiting. I'd much rather visit Disneyland then DCA. I also like how you mentioned that Star Wars land is off to the side doing its own thing and I never really thought about it that way. I really hope Disney keeps padding out DCA after phase 2 of Avengers.

Disney better not continue its trend of using IPs as the main focus in their parks, but instead make something creatively different and original. Hell, I wouldn’t mind if there is a third gate based off the canceled WestCOT or DisneySea plans from the ‘90’s.
@AStageForTheKingdom
@AStageForTheKingdom Жыл бұрын
That's like saying Universal should have built a generic wizard park instead of Harry Potter, or a generic land instead of the Mario one. Sounds pretty foolish when you put it that way. Disney would be stupid to build a risky non-IP park, when they could build one with Pandora, Frozen, Tangled, Toy Story, Beauty And The Beast, Mary Poppins, Lion King, Aladdin, etc.
@samuelwitwicky3900
@samuelwitwicky3900 Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately with how people are in America, I would have to agree with your statements since product placement is what most people in the US sadly want the most. However looking at places like Tokyo, it seems that they’re adding Disney IPs as well but don’t relay in using them for everything. I know the Oriental Land Company owns it, but it stands out with having something original and distantly Disney (DisneySea). Some of the parks here in the states (EPCOT and California Adventure) are losing identity and originality with IPs slapped everywhere.

It will be budget trash, as has become the norm under Iger. His legacy, will be of a man(?) who single-handedly destroyed everything that made Disney special. He lost families, he priced out the average enthusiast, and he ruined he last 10+ films, with his dogged determination to embrace ESG, no matter what. He has allowed Kathy Kennedy, to absolutely destroy Star Wars, Willow, Indiana Jones, etc., with no real path back. It’s less Kennedy’s fault, than it is IGER’S fault.
@samuelwitwicky3900
@samuelwitwicky3900 Жыл бұрын
Agreed, ultimately the problems come down to Bob Iger and even Michael Eisner for starting these trends. Iger put Disney in a position of having to continue paying for the FOX deal at the ridiculous amount of nearly $70 billion, owning money back to their main competitor Comcast, price gouging tickets and parking, charging for former free services, and suggesting selling the company to Apple after returning as CEO to avoid bankruptcy.

Coco/Encanto ride/sing along style ride. Mexico/Hispanics. incorporate their foods into the restaurants. and a refuge for disney’s legacy and history. to begin their “cementing” as the company for our children. personal dream would be a polynesian style land. bring the island lifestyle. Seriously, why can't Disney just buy all of the houses in an adjacent neighborhood for $150-200m? Or just start buying houses as they come up for sale under shell companies, and then buy the rest off-market for a premium? They've nearly lost a BILLION dollars in the past 12 months alone from their string of box office bombs and underperformers - Guardians being the only break even film among them. I'd much rather see them spend a couple hundred million on buying up an entire neighborhood. Raze all of the houses, and they'd have plenty of space for back of house type buildings or parking garages, which would in turn, free up space closer to the actual park's footprint. They should have done this years ago before house prices went through the roof. Even so, they have the money.

Should've Disney had bought all that area when they could? Yeah, for sure. Can Disney do it now? I'm honestly not sure... One thing I do know is that they have a lot of land that can be used, so that should (and seems to be) their number one priority. To get the approval from the city to freely build what they want. Going back to the houses, not only would they be super expensive to buy, but also I'm not sure it would read well with the public... "Disney pressures families to move out of their homes to expand theme park" Ooof...

I am not a fan of expansion being based on the current fad of movies. The Marvel area of CA Adventure has character interaction but little else. The re-theming of rides is stupid. CA Adventure has little to do with CA anymore. What Disney should build is a nice RV park.

Make it a massive Disney water park in that enormous parking lot. With themed hotel, some shopping but not too much. A five level parking structure and extend the monorail all 4 theme parks DISNEYLAND, DISNEY CALIFORNIA ADVENTURE, DISNEY FORWARD & DISNEY WATERPARK. 🎉🎉🎉 It is Southern California that Disney Waterpark would be amazing.

Wow! Impressive! Too bad the plan will be so scaled back, that it won’t resemble the original vision, in any way, shape or form. Also, I DON’T CARE. I am *really* looking forward to what Universal has planned, with EpicUniverse. Rumors of a LORD OF THE RINGS park, has me about to lose my mind, and Nintendoland, is VERY far beyond what Duhsney has coming. Tron only took what, 15 years? So, they should be ready in 2040. Oh, add in the DeSantis road blocks, that WILL be erected, and we should be good by 2050. BYE, DI$NEY! Say hi to Ariel for me!

I don't understand why Disney doesn't scrap Autopia. Sure, it always has a line so it's popular enough but it takes up a ridiculous amount of space that could be transformed into 2 or 3 other attractions. The Tron Lightcycles could fit there and would seem much more "tomorrowland" than going for a car ride through the forest.
@themainstreetnews

@Ryecrash617
@Ryecrash617 Жыл бұрын
@@themainstreetnews I agree completely. It's hard to design something for "tomorrow" that won't become outdated given time and that's probably one of the reasons Disney hasn't done much to update Tomorrowland but I think that is missing the point. The "tomorrow" in Tomorrowland only needs to be the idea of "tomorrow" to the current guests. Space exploration will likely be future-y for a very long time. Why not start a modification of the theme (refresh) of Tomorrowland to focus on exploring other planets in the future. What would we need for transportation on land (Autopia) or in alien oceans (submarines) or through human outposts on alien planets (Peoplemovers) or in the atmosphere of alien planets (astro orbiter)?

Disney's getting stuck with the tab for Hulu - combine that with their way overpaying for Fox and their continued box office money loosing disasters - they are broke. Tokyo isn't run by Disney but a different company under license. Don't expect anything at Disneyland any time soon!

While most of what you said is indeed true and you make a great point, Disney is still very much profitable. Disney+ was suffering so changes have been made to lower the operational cost, layoffs have happened (unfortunately I might add) to help with company wide cost reductions. Iger is putting all he has to relieve the company debt but one thing that’s making money is the parks. They need to continue to invest in the parks so that the revenue keeps up. No investment means less interest. Disney won’t stop investing in the Parks, it may be less than before with tighter budgets, but that’s not always a bad thing! (Sorry for the huge size of the reply haha)

@@themainstreetnews I don't disagree they need to keep investing in the parks (cleaning them would be a great first step) but with what money? It's going to be interesting to see what they have to do to scrape up the cash for Hulu. If they would go back to making good, family friendly movies and stop injecting ideological crap into them we wouldn't even be having this discussion. It's so stupid. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Disaster is going to lose money big time - forget breaking even. They are screwed. Maybe the stock going down another 30% will finally get the investors pissed off enough we will see a good housecleaning of the board as well as the idiotic executives like Iger too. Or maybe the stock will have to go down 50% before they truly care? Time will tell.

@@themainstreetnews Disney - so profitable they just fired two top executives at Pixar. So profitable they are laying off a ton of people. So profitable they pulled back on the expansion in Florida. So profitable they pulled a ton of content from Disney+ so they didn't have to pay out residuals and could claim it as a tax write off. You can have all the rose colored glasses you want - numbers don't lie and Disney is in deep doo doo - and this Hulu buy out is going to be a real make or break point for Disney. Disney canceled the lake Nona campus because they are broke and employees dont want to move from a democratic state to a republican one. Also this was a Chapek idea that Eiger didnt like. Reason 1 is why I don't think Disney will be expanding Disneyland any time soon for the following reasons: 1.) Movies are underperforming 2.) Shows are underperforming 3.) Disney+ is losing huge amount of money 4.) They will have to fork over more money to buy Fox's stake in Hulu 5.) Shareholder revolt 6.) Interest payments on loans for Fox acquisition and Covid loans 7.) (Possible) Increasing costs in Florida which is there main moneymaker 8.) Merchandise sales volume decreasing because of 1 & 2.
