Just having built my own three 24v 120ah 8s batteries for my sprinter RV I have noticed that when floating at 28.4v then putting a load on them the voltage drops to 27.1v almost immediately ... Then it will hang there for a long time UNLESS I am running the A/C unit or I have a Large tool ie; 220v Mig Welder or my table chop saw running (Ihave a 6kw 240v invert)... but if I am just camping w/ small loads I could probable go a week of rain w/ no problems... The voltage drops some when I first enable the system but hangs at about 26.5 - 27.1 for a very long time... May I state that I am a complete novice and have built my system by watching and listening to will. The majority of my system was purchased from Electric Car Parts in Utah... (Thanks Carl) ... Will Prowst has been a godsend and his videos are pretty right on... Many Blessings , SMR

Hey Will, first of all: Really like your videos, how you explain things and bring the important bits and pieces to the viewer! As a doctorate student in the field of safety of lithium ion batteries, I can affirm that you do have a good understanding and structural approach on the topics. Built my own small solar farm (as a hobby the past weeks) and was lucky to find your channel, especially about some stuff where I needed more info on (MPPT vs PWM, real life data on inverters etc). For the C-rate topic: The rated nominal capacities for cells are measured for a certain current/C-rate, of course with a higher discharge current the capacity decreases slightly due to the DC-IR drop, but I think you also mentioned this. Keep it up, you're putting out great content and dont let those comments get you down!

David is correct, always challenge, always question. It is good practice and it how you learn. But I also agree there is no arrogance in Will’s statements and I can think of no video he has done that he has arrogance. He explains calmly and with evidence his point of view. He also states , nicely, to go out and read the legitimate documents that are out there, which shows he wants you to prove him wrong if you can do so with scientific data. As usual Will, wonderful job.

I'm going to tell you strait up what I like about what you're doing. You have facts and you're not expressing an opinion, and when you do give an opinion, you say its an opinion. A fact can't be disputed. It stands on its own merits. I never argue with my opinion because my opinion is worthless. Only the facts matter. The worse thing someone can do is to try and provide credibility to their argument by telling me they are an EE. and they know what they are talking about. I will relish the opportunity to tell them they should seek compensation for their lack of an education. Disputing the manufactures recommendations and specifications isn't smart unless someone can show test data measurements that conflict with the manufactures data sheet. The only exception to this is UL laboratories safety recommendations, if there are any. They have the final word and shouldn't be ignored under any circumstances.

Yeah, when you are learning you don't know what's wrong, and usually you go to the comments to try and learn more. Fortunately will DOES know what he's talking about, but it's unfortunate for people that don't know him and read wildly wrong comments like these. One thing I've learned over the years is that some people just know enough to get themselves into trouble... And they tend to be vocal trying to show off. Running around telling people to charge to wildly incorrect voltages, or bringing up irrelevant effects that can cause you to waste money on unnecessary batteries isn't something a new person can recognize.

Hi, your are spot on with what you are saying in this video and the processes you use to test these batteries. Some people confuse lithium with lead acid and even think all lithium chemistries are the same. Ps, I am an electronic engineering that designs commercially available chargers for all different battery chemistries, thus if I was wrong about this stuff I would be in big trouble. Keep up the good work 👍

Hi Will - Nice video addressing this issue. I think some of the comments may be innocent in nature and wanting to learn, while others are made out of ignorance or even lazyness. There are so many different chemistries on the market now, it is naive to assume they all work the same. A common message I often give to my younger, less experienced engineers is READ THE DATASHEET. It is remarkable how many people disregard this basic information. Personally I really enjoy watching your videos and find them instructive. I particularly love it when you do a tear down and debunk the claims of some of these "fly by night" vendors. People seem to forget that if something is too good to be true, it usually is. Praise the good guys and call out the rats. Keep doing what your doing man, you are helping us all.

"You have a right to your own opinion, but not your own facts". Will - I think people underestimate your intimate knowledge and expansive knowledge on this topic. Likely because of your age. However, you have a gift to not only "Geek out" in the details, but a sign of a real expert is someone that can put complex information into Layman's terms, and we all appreciate that, especially me! Don't let ignorance upset you, the fact that you came back to disprove ("educate") may have won you new fans, since you took the time to have a conversation, which is more of what we need collectively. Thanks for all you do, Will.

Love it. Call them out by name, and then intelligently respond to each. Most people just want to regurgitate some random bit of data that they collected from some random source...yet have no knowledge, experience, or understanding of a subject. People have lost their desire to actually learn. I come here to LEARN. When a source teaches me....then I return. 48 years old, business owner, engineering background, and still desire to learn about my field and other topics that I find interesting. Hey Will, I'm one of your forum members who bought the 280ah cells for $482 to my door from alibaba, (Xuba web site). I learned how to setup a lifepo4 battery by actually following your build guide lines carefully and my battery works great, so far, I;ve only been working on it for a few weeks. Your information is right on if you read it carefully. If there are any confusing parts of the assembly, testing and programming the forum is a big help. Setting up the BMS program is a little tricky but that is because of the poor documentation of the BMS ... it takes a little trial and error to optimize for the way I want to use it. (give up a little capacity for more charge cycles). Anyway you're a great teacher and we appreciate your hard work. jjb (aka ...tomtilly)

Hey Will! There is actually some truth to the "breaking in" certain lithium batteries. Yes, I read the battery university page. Winston and Thundersky used to be separate companies back in the day. Thundersky had its own website with english documentation. It stated that initial charge should be done to 4.2 volts. IIRC, when yttrium was added they lowered initial charge to 4.0V. I don't know if charging that high had any benefit though.. Why do I know anything? Well I have 49 Thundersky 90Ah LiFePo cells, made in 2009(!) in my EV :) Good content, subscribed.

BTW, re the "break in" comment: I noticed just recently when I received some aftermarket lithium camera batteries that the instructions said something to the effect that "full capacity not reached until 3 charges" or something. I suspect this is more about preventing returns (hey! I didn't get as many shots!) or the rather blah charger they provide or just accounting for user error or something. I do know the camera manufacturers ship their batteries in a state below full charge, and request the owner to fully charge before use, but I'd expect that has to do with not storing them at full charge, not some need for "break in." Thanks for the great videos, BTW!
