This advice changed my life for the better starting many years ago. Peterson taught me that's it's important to be disagreeable at times. If one is too agreeable one can cause harm to ones self and those one cares about.

@@GalactusOG You are completely right about being disagreeable at times. You need to have fangs and use them when necessary. Peterson taught me as well how to stand my ground. I was a rug for everyone, at work and outside, in my early 20's. And resentment was all I was. Thank you Peterson!

I’m sorry you went thru that. I was just 51/50 and after that experience I broke up with my boyfriend and went back to my toxic work place. I’m over it. I can’t make a choice due to so much job hoping so I stay and I just keep to myself. But now management is helping out due to me being a liability. 4 months later and finally they listen but only because if something bad happened to me then they would be held responsible. Wish I could quit but I cannot. Plus if I do quit I’ll just find another job with another person who has a cluster b personality so I’ll just pass.

He is right on this. In 2008 I hated my job and the field I was in was depleting. The economy was tanking but I still had the opportunity to take early retirement. The first year it was dicey and wondered if I made the right decision. After that first year everything fell in place and I don't regret the decision. Through time it left me time to take care of my mom with Alzheimer's and spend more time with mom. So I took the chance and my life has been more rewarding than working in a job with no rewards

Last year I let a few emotionally abusive managers and HR ruin an 18 year long career in software programming. I’m afflicted with stress, sickness, self doubt, and have lost a lot of my self esteem. I currently work a labor job with guys less than half my age (I turn 50 in two months). Some days I feel as if nobody noticed I took a wrong turn and smashed my car into a tree, so to speak. It feels good to listen to someone who really cares about people like me.

Software programming is an industry that is full of entrepreneurial opportunities. I know you’re discouraged now. But entertain the idea that the dead end you crashed in may not have been a one-way street you thought it is. Look at freelance work opportunities, look for people in a similar industry who have found different paths of success (youtube and podcasts have many). You are never too old, it’s never too late. Find a way where you can find hope again on your bright future.

I think most people that are miserable with what they do are forced to stay trapped out of economic necessity, especially if they have others in their family who are financially dependent on them. Actions have risks and consequences as do inactions have risk and consequences. Life is full of great difficulties no matter how hard we may at times try to avoid them. He hit the nail on the head MUST “put yourself in a position to make your own decisions” that’s important. But that doesn’t mean you have to get there by someone else, you’re ALREADY in that position to make your own decisions as a self regulated specie and must acknowledge that. You work by way of that it’s your guide. But then he says “well maybe you have no choice because you have bills to pay.” Naturally that was always the trap and it’s only the trap’s excuse that’s ego talking. Work for self/family. So number two ditch your toxic culture and I don’t refer to nation I refer to media/economy influence. Once ditched that gives you your time and space so that you can see beyond what your mind was only influenced to see as “normal.” There’s nothing healthy about it a mass manipulation ego’s fight to dominate. The species is no good dominated by ego. As he says, “GET OUT” of the imprisonment.

Well, I think work ethic has to be taught to a certain degree. Anyway, I think its more sophisticated than not just wanting to work. You pointed out how they hate their jobs. Which jobs are these? Low wage and low skilled jobs? Few like those jobs. That should be of no surpise. I always do my best to pay the utmost respect to those who work in unglamorous or low wage jobs, because they are likely just doing it to just survive. Its a lot to ask of a person to be happy while performing menial duties. I would say the problem is not just the attitude, but is even more systemic. Our economy is not as productive or innovative as it once was. Even our very money is less valuable. (Inflation.) And while our culture has certainly deteriorated, a more fundamental issue is that we have become too socialist and were reaping the consequences. You have to work more hours and longer just to stay where you are. It shouldn't be so suprising that many are angry at such a situation.

Pretty Generous, No? Then they are consistently late or call off. As for menial job workers, ANYTHING You can do to take care of your family is worthy and respectable! I've been there as well. There is No Shade on Anyone working less paying jobs to provide for their family! Any step in a positive direction is good. My advise: so an interview for a job your don't actually want. Sell yourself like gold on a silver platter. I did this for my first interview and I was set for the rest of them.

First, there's no answer! Second there's always options. You're dealing with a businessman or bugger boss. Assuming you're too good at what you do and always got pushed around. That's usually the case, otherwise nobody would give you more work... the answer is there's no time my schedule to get this done but if you want me to leave another 3-4 projects and get this don't, I will. Find time. I will, tomorrow!

I keep saying, man, make the thumbnails accurately depict what we'll see in the videos. This is so counterproductive. Your most liked videos are you giving lectures in these classes, apolitical, and unbelievably insightful. Yet, the thumbnail is some random, edited photo, which gives the user no idea what to expect from the video. I bet most people would scroll past it, as it looks like one of those badly edited motivational videos that KZfaq is full of. Just take a screenshot from the actual video, add some text over it, and upload it. Your views will double.

if my boss asked me to do *X* and in the middle of me doing *X* my boss comes and ask me to do *Y* instead and then comes back again in 5 minutes to yell at me "why isn't *X* being taken care of" am I the emotionally weak asshole slacker with no justified reason to quit? or are these repeated instances a sign of a toxic boss that's going to wear me out?

No to gay sex. That’s for certain. I’m not equipped to work in an apple farm writing programs, apps, and code. I was retired in Colorado. Retired. And my ex husband brought me here pretending to be the poor. Shall I go further?
