Lionel’s team decoding this formula to Kona success is really fascinating. I believe Lionel when he says he is good mentally......he does have the wherewithal to push himself to the max....but he knows it’s only one part of the formula. It’s really what makes Kona so interesting to watch.....one of about 7-10 guys really have the “stuff” to win. It’s really too bad we have to wait for Kona every year to see that many great athletes against each other in one race. There seems to be way too many Ironmans.....

Some observations from the data: Swim: Lionel lost two pounds; struggled to raise heart rate due to break down in form Bike: Lionel lost 3.5 pounds Run: Lionel could lose 7 pounds Mental focus: not an issue Physical toll of course: muscles feel worn due to weather conditions and elevation gains and losses Recommendations: Emphasize more strength training, focusing on heavy lifting Emphasize swim training that correlates heart rate to swim efficiency Incorporate more hill running Produce bike workouts that recruit and expand lactate as fuel Increase fat max as one way to counter the rapid weight loss throughout the race Just my two cents.

Its the swim. 31st out of the water so you gotta hammer on the bike to get to the main pack and then hold on the run. With how amazing he is on the bike and the run. If you take his splits from 17 and put a 48:00 swim on it he wins kona.

Love his videos. Heart on the sleeve stuff. He has hit the nail on the head in this video though. More run speed is not necessary. What is necessary is for him to sort his swim, his nutrition and not to over cook the bike. He has to face facts, in Kona now, like ITU racing, the swim is really important. He (and others) are expending serious energy just getting up to the front bike pack. It’s taking its toll on their run times.

The answer to Lionel's "million dollars question" is actualy very simple: there must be enough glycogen left after bike to allow Lionel releasing 11,700 kJ of energy in just 2:48 marathon. We have known this for almost half a century. In other words, the exhaustion after cycling should be such that Lionel can release 1,700 kJ in just (or faster) 2:48 marathon. But it is not simple to prepare athlete for that ;-)

Why do they talk about 2.48 marathon??? The goal is Top 5? To win hawaii Lionel has to run 2.40-2.42 at least. The race tactic been changed. Leading swim group going hard on the bike. Frodeno did 2.42 last year. 2017-2018 winning marathon time 2.39-2.40". This guys can run 2.14 marathon (alone) not 2.30. I cheering for Lionel i just saying need a different strategy a masterplan.

Lionel doesnt need to run a 2:48 to win Kona, he just needs to be faster than everyone else on the bike and the run (the swim neeeds to be top 5-10). The run time is really dependent on the weather conditions, not just for him, but for everyone.

Hawaii race dynamic and tactic has been changed. I think 2.48 is enough if he would be the leader off the bike by 6-8 mins. Which doesn't seams realistic. The first group 5-6pp (top swimmers) are really strong on the bike. Lionel will be in 2nd pack on the swim with 3-4 min gap. To catch the 1st group will take 100-140 km (if they can). If he can run 2.42 off the bike he has more card to play.

If he did that his race would go like this.... third pack out of the swim... comfortable ride.... 2:48 marathon... no better than 9th place..
