My son and I found this early 1900s Disston No. 12 panel saw at a house clean out, where everything was going for free. The plate was in great shape, and just needed to have the rust removed, and cleaned up, so the focus of this video is on restoring the broken tote.

Thanks FStP, the old handle or tote has a lot of history, as well as lot of good work put into it. Not to mention that the quality of older woods is typically superior to new growth lumber. Saving as much as I can is typically what I try to do, when I can. Thanks for watching, and for commenting!

Well I really enjoyed that repair. I have a few broken totes in the pile, and I'm sure a few with a piece like this missing.

Really nice, sympathetic restoration. These old tools are much better quality than the cheap, cruddy abhoranses they mass produce in certain parts of the world that won't last until the end of next year, let alone the decade, while this beauty still has another 100 years left in it. Would love to see it working after it's been sharpened, and also, a lovely old carpenters workbox restored with it in, along with all the other tools you have restored. About time for a plane or two isn't it ?

Thanks PTC! I think you're right about old tools, which is why I grab them when I can, and fix them up for use. I've done one plane video so far, most of the Stanley planes I've fixed up in the past I didn't make videos of, but I have a few more that you'll see at some point, and maybe a few old wooden fillister planes I have that need some help to get them working again. Thanks for your comment and your suggestions!

Thanks RB, that was a fun saw to fix up. I've since seen someone use a curved V-chisel to do the carving, and that looked like it worked too, but the chip carving worked great for me.

How do you find the model numbers for these saws? Is there some data base with teeth per inch and overall length. I never found it on the saw itself.

Hi AC, thanks for watching and for the question. Saws typically don't have model numbers stamped on them in my experience. If there is an etch on the plate, that will sometimes have the model, but with older saws, the etch is often rusted away. Without the etch, the design of the saw is what we're left with. The shape of the tote, along with the medallion, bolt pattern, and the shape of the plate is usually what we have to go on. The teeth per inch can be changed over time, so unless there is a number stamped on the heel that confirms what you're seeing, its not a reliable way to determine model number. Saw makers often made many tooth and length options for the same model. There are lots of on line resources out there. One of my favorites for Disston saws is www.disstonianinstitute.com/ Erik von Sneidern has done us all a service with the work he has put into his website. I hope that helps! -Philo

Hi, can you tell me the length and tpi of this saw?

Sure, I noted that on screen at about the 2:30 mark. Its a 24-inch plate, filed for rip at 6 1/2 PPI (or 5 1/2 TPI). Thanks for asking, and thanks for watching!

That's a great question WS. I'm not aware of anyone who sells the old style brass saw bolts new. Folks like me who fix up saws, usually save old ones for future restorations, and like me, they are usually unwilling to give them up. I have seen folks selling older saw bolts on ebay and etsy, but they're typically expensive. The cheapest way to get some would be keep your eye out for worn out or broken saws that still have some of the bolts. I usually find old saw for just a few dollars at tag sales, but I'm not sure if that is an option for you, depending on where you're from. You'll typically spend more than that for one bolt on ebay. Good luck, and thanks for watching and commenting!
