Thank You for making your wonderful videos. I started watching your videos my Jr year of high School. And your videos encouraged me to work for the railroad. Which I did, I started as an NS Conductor in 2015, was promoted at Engineer in 2019 and now in 2022. I'm continuing my railroad career as a Amtrak engineer. If it wasn't for your videos, I don't know if I would be in the position I am today. Thank You!

Really enjoying your videos, sir. As a kid, I always made my grandparents take me to the train tracks in Titusville, FL when I was visiting them... Fast forward 25+ years, and now I find myself logging the train times in my little town of Winder, GA. I can hear them from the house. I also have a set of tracks parallel to my hunting properties outer most trail and hwy 278 in Crawfordville GA... the guys all tease me when at anytime of the day or night, when I hear the train coming, I load up on my 4 wheeler and boogie towards the tracks to catch him (as long as I'm not in a stand of course). I've never "rail fanned" the way you do, but I feel like buying a radio and a camera to keep in my camper. LOL! Thanks for the entertainment, Danny!

Danny those double yellow signals on CSX are approach diverging signals out west on our railroad, it's the last signal you'll see before you approach a siding or crossovers!
@SD40Fan_Jason2 жыл бұрын
yeah CSX does things differently than the railroads out west. You also use Block signalling while CSX uses speed signaling. If you saw the one signal there showing yellow over green, that means the same as your approach diverging for us, but the key difference is it also has a speed restriction. Approach Medium - Approach the next signal not exceeding medium speed. (30 MPH)

Many times the friendly train staff would invite us on board to let me look out the cab window. Miss those days. I used to do the same for my nieces and nephew. But 9/11 changed everything. For what it's worth (UK Ham here, a US Ham will no doubt correct me if I get something wrong) - FRS and GMRS aren't quite the same. They share some channels, but each also has channels that the other doesn't. Also, FRS has a comparatively short range (about a mile) due to only being permitted 0.5W of transmit power, where GMRS can use up to 50W (more watts equals more range, roughly speaking). They're compatible systems, but can be a bit fiddly to get to work together. You may also need a GMRS license to transmit on GMRS (I'm not sure, but it should be fairly easy to find out), but I believe they can just be bought for reasonable money - no test required. This was a great video, that aside :) I'd always assumed that train identifiers would be unique on the network at a given instant - probably because I forget how big the US is and how far away a train might be coming from, as well as that day-long delays can happen - so I was surprised to see two identical trains at the end there. I assume the hoppers top-and-tailing the tanker train (K433) were there to space the locomotives from potentially dangerous tank cars?
@SD40Fan_Jason2 жыл бұрын
@Dan you are absolutely correct in that the channels 15-22 are GMRS 1-8 simplex and they require a license to use. But like anything else it's only illegal if you get caught. Fortunately the blister-pack radios don't usually cause much interference to GMRS operations and since licensed operators are usually running 5-25 watts or more, they probably won't even hear the blister-pack rigs. Still it's bonkers that they are allowed to produce radios with channels that are regulated, but include them with a package that has no regulation. And yes those hopper cars are called cover cars. They are placed in the consist to comply with hazmat regulations as it pertains to a key train. A key train is any train with a hazmat commodity in at least 20 cars. the hazmat regulations say for a mixed freight train to have at least 5 cover cars between the locomotive and a hazmat tank of certain classification. Things like hot tar or environmental hazards only are excluded from that rule. With key trains, especially unit key trains, they will require them to have at least one cover car.

Great Video as usual, BTW 136# rail is the railroad industry standard because it’s easier and cheaper for the steel mills just one size for every one. On the LIRR where I worked we went from 119# rail to 136# rail not because of tonnage just economics not many railroads wanted 119# making 136# actually cheaper .

Danny, regarding high iron…I’d never heard your definition but it certainly makes sense.
