“All of the dogs are engaged with their handlers, except that one loose dog we have running around” 😂
@adammacsween32302 жыл бұрын
Very informative. That dog just cruising around while all the other dogs are 100% focused on the handlers is a brilliant introduced distraction. This happens in the real world and that is how to really train and proof your dog. I am constantly blown away at how simple yet effective your strategies are.

So many people were so confused when we've requested nobody is to feed him no matter how often they come to our house or what it is. Just for fun I tried searching YT for content on the concept and nothing. Until ours was about 6ish months old and excelling (most importantly) at basic obedience, the dogs grandparents had never once fed him anything, I believe when he was proofed to not touch food no matter where we are or what were doing is when we allowed "nanny" to treat him. And he will not obey commands from anyone without mom or dad's "ok" for this reason.

I get the psychological point of making the dog see the handler as the most valuable thing... But if they don't interact with other dogs and people (like u said, so that it isn't rewarding for them) then how can you avoid the dog being scared and/or agressive towards other dogs/people if they don't socialize with them (considering you can't always control the environment). For example a stray dog/un trained loose dog coming to interact directly with my dog. Or a dumb person who just randomly thinks it's okay to touch me dog just because it's well behaved and engaged with me.
@adamantemrose22853 жыл бұрын
I don't think they mean not to socialise the dog, the dogs are clearly socialised to the other dogs in the room. I think it's more about not letting them meet random strangers and random dogs, and more about socialising them with family and friends dogs. This type of super dedicated distraction training is for working dogs, not just normal pups, so they're probably trained to behave differently on and off the job like service dogs are
@tinasmeyers7492 жыл бұрын
They aren’t making the dog do it 24/7 I believe that when on command the dog has to pay attention to the handler but u can teach them a break command so that the dog know it can do what it wants (with in reason) meaning they can interact with other dogs
@1packatak2 жыл бұрын
Always protect your dog!!! And yourself!!! That loose dog running at you could be setting up for a fight. That stranger could be coming up and hit your dog. You get in front of your dog. You back off the other dog. You tell the human to go on his way. I have been in situations where stray dogs attacked my dog. Where a stranger tried to grab the leash out of my hand and take my dog. Where a friend had her purse stolen when two people asked to pet her dog and distracted her. I am never letting that happen again.

i get the concept to avoid letting dogs do as they please which can result them in seeking and being reinforced for seeking out distractions in the environment. but someone here already asked this, so how do you get your dog to be well socialised to things, people, other dogs in the environment? if you restrict their access wouldn't they become over-obsessed with those stimuli?
@coreandarlionstarot3 жыл бұрын
I’m hardly an expert but I think I can give some advice or at least my observation to answer your question. No I do not think they would become hyper aware. Do you see the number of dogs in the room here? They all see the other dogs but the handler is the one they are “hyper aware” of because he is the praiser, the treat giver, etc. So to an extent I do think they are getting socialized and de-associated to other dogs and random people. As far as letting them actually interact with another dog? Safety first. Usually we know other dog owners, family or friends. Use them in your training to desensitize your dog, get them used to each other while reinforcing training. Use a fenced in yard or a dog park and practice then when training is over let them play? I would think the removal of the leash in such an area would be sort of like a green light for play, like you would do in your own space at home where you play and run your dog off leash. Almost like a service animal: vest means work, no vest means play and relax time. I hope this helps and if I’m incorrect in anything here please do correct me! I’m here to learn too.
@happysunshine59062 жыл бұрын
Socialization is not direct contact with the stimuli as most think but rather coexistence. As a handler you restrict the access to it not its exposure. Dog-to-dog socialization doesn’t have to be direct interaction in the form of butt sniffing or play. Dogs can smell each other way before the handler sees one.

I'm sorry to say that preventing your dog from having contact with other dogs consistently can't be done in the real world. This is because other dog owners don't give a toss about my training goals. If I ward off every off-leash or on-leash dog that bumps into mine I will teach my dog that other dogs are a threat.

Hi, very nice vid as always! Can you please make a video about holding the aport like the GS in this vid? My 5 month old tervueren can wait for me to throw aport, bring it back on command, but he always throws it at my feet. I tried individual sessions to teach him to hold something and we made some progress. But anytime I touch what he's holding he spits it out. It's very frustrating. I think he can't distinguish between "bring" and "hold" at all and assumes I always want the item back asap. I'd really appreciate some nice tips from you!
