@Hoshimaru574 жыл бұрын
Northern Snowbird very good, people tend to get that wrong. Just like everyone screws up what the 7 deadly sins are, and claim that Jesus said God hates gays. He doesn’t. One of the disciples says it’s a sin along with about 30 other things, half of which most of us do every day. And the actual passage that coins the term is Proverbs 6:16-19 “The are six things God hates, seven which are an abomination to Him: A proud look, a lying tongue, hands that she’d innocent blood, a heart that creates wicked schemes, feet swift to create mischief, false witness, and those who sow discord among brothers.” But none of this is gonna matter because KZfaq is probably gonna remove this comment even though it’s educational because it’s controversial.

If you had been alive when the Genesis version was created I'm sure you would see things differently. The puppets in the Genesis version showed all the players in the crazy world we had just before the end of the cold war. Old or not, the Genesis version gets the point across very well for those of us alive at the time.

With the Genesis version, it was a time where we were constantly on the brink of nuclear annihilation, so the humor was applied to make it palatable at the time. Disturbed being a metal band had to come at it with a harder edge just on G.P. Plus it had to bring the song forward by 20 + years so the audience would appreciate it. Sonically speaking both versions stand upon their own merit, regardless of which version the listener prefers. The bottom line is that it's a great song with a timeless message, as it can be applied in many different ways. For, me there is no "better version", the version that I would prefer to listen to depends solely upon my mood at the time. P.S. Massive props for anticipating the want of reaction to both versions!

Well said. I'm old enough to remember that fear of the nuclear annihilation. And when people talked about it, they never used the word IF, but always WHEN. So Genesis when headlong into the subject, but also wanted to relieve some of the stress though humour. - There were already plenty of young people fighting in the streets, robbing and vandalizing banks in protests against capitalism in those years. They didn't exactly make the world a better place to live in. Disturbed goes the other way, and want to awaken defiance in their audience. Which also has its time and place.

Indeed. The threat of nuclear annihilation may be bit further away but different threats have arrived. In countries like Libya, Somalia, Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan they have largely materialised, people and things blasted up ruthlessly to seize in power and natural resources, masked to the veil of religion and "freedom".

“The LOVE of money is the root of all evil” , is the actual quote. Many people get this wrong.
@johnwhitworth80234 жыл бұрын
Close but actually it is 1 Timothy 6:10 and says, "For the love of money is A root of all sorts of evil, and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs (NASB)". It's an often misquoted scripture that affects the message.
@LongandWeirdName4 жыл бұрын
@@johnwhitworth8023 ῥίζα γὰρ πάντων τῶν κακῶν ἐστὶν ἡ φιλαργυρία. Note that the ῥίζα has no defining article. That being the case, it isn't a root. It is THE root. The source. Not one of the sources. Also... πάντων τῶν κακῶν. There is argument among scholars of Greek if that phrase is meant to be all different kids of or every kind of, without exception. As this is in conversation between Paul and Timothy and as proverbs are supposed to be exaggerated and simplified/overgeneralized, I'd go with the second version. Thus, "The love of money is The root of All evil" is actually a better translation. At least in my eyes.

I didn't comment on your Genesis reaction because i wanted to see your reaction. However, i'm an Army vet. The song that convinced me to join was the original Genesis Land of Confusion. This version is much more militant. What really got me were the lyrics, "These are the hands we're given. Use them and let's start trying. To make this a place worth living in." So I joined the military, after my training and on the way to my first duty station, I met my wife. This was in 2007. Here we are in 2020, I'm still married to my wife, we have 3 kids. I used my hands to help build a world in a place worth living in. I'm no longer in the military, now I work in tech. I help the world in this trying time to be able to work from home.

I am surprised that people haven't pointed out the all important change in the lyrics. It's in the "I remember, long ago" section. The lyrics "and the sound of your laughter" become "in the wake of this madness". The innocence of laughing becomes the ruins of the aftermath. Holding someone smiling and laughing versus holding someone, consoling them in the destroyed rubble. Such a small difference, but a powerful image shift.

The Genesis video was made during the cold war where there was the very real possibility of the world being annihilated in a nuclear war. The people who made it were a group who did a series called "Spitting image" which was political satire. If you know how Spitting image stylises the puppets you would be able to recognise a lot of the characters in that video were world leaders and dictators from that era. The Disturbed one makes it more about fighting against the big powers that oppress people in general rather than the risk of nuclear annihilation.

How about Disturbed "Prayer" or Genesis "Jesus He Loves Me".

Both this and "Sound of Silence", these guys actually add the anger.

I'm a little under a decade older than you so I recognize all the political figures being satirized in the Genesis version were and remember the sheer existential terror of the Cold War (which was peaking for the last time when the Genesis tune came out). Gorbachev had yet to cool off the Cold War and Reagan and the Soviets had been sabre rattling for several years. The fear of nuclear war was higher than at any time since the Cuban Missile Crisis. The satirical tone Genesis opted for let people laugh through their fears. Had they gone literal with it like Disturbed did, it would have seemed so bleak that it would have caused viewers despair in 1985. The Day After (1983 movie) had rammed home the idea of a post-nuclear world. People look at the 80s and think goofy electropop and pastels but all that kitsch was a distraction from fears of global annihilation. The entire zeitgeist of the 80s was distraction from that fear. I remember the feeling of that nuclear sword of Damocles and the astonished relief we all felt when the Berlin Wall fell. The world stopped holding its breath and all the light-hearted facade of the 80s collapsed. There were metal songs dealing with the same themes in hard edgy ways during the 80s (some far heavier than this) but that sort of dark insightful metal wasn't mainstream until the 90s. The "pop music" metal of the 80s was basically party rock with some metal trappings. Any insightful or difficult topics in 80s mainstream music was usually tackled with deceptively boppy (99 Luftballons) or soulful sound. Disturbed's video and version reflects the time they recorded it. Metal was mainstream. The current fears were increasing authoritarianism, corporate greed and conventional warfare. The video shows defiance to those ills in the form of rebellion while the Genesis video tackled the unbearable anxiety of global extinction any second with ridicule. Each hit the right not at the right time but being more recent, Disturbed's video and tone feels more relatable today.

You DEFINATELY need to watch Billy Strings singing Dust In A Baggie. The first time he plays it he's sitting on his couch. There is a studio version, and the backyard session, and the Grand Ole Opry live version.

"That Genesis video is just so old". I was 10 when that song/video came out. Damn, making me feel old. I still love your channel. It's great seeing someone experience something you love with fresh eyes.

I always felt the Disturbed version was so much more agressive because the message in Genesis's version was already so spot on and clear, it pissed the Disturbed guys off that the song was still so relevant.

Regardless who does it. The message is still the same. Stop just living for your happiness today. Leave your children a better place then you found it.
@bigboy211234 жыл бұрын
We have already spent the inheritance of future generations but hopefully the kids of today will hold politicians accountable for the reckless spending that they do and the federal reserve accountable for the inflation that erodes away the purchasing power of the dollar. Chances are that they will elect a berney Sanders type to usher in socialism and find themselves in a worse off position. Make no mistakes about it, the second great depression is months away so get your beans and rice ready or gold and silver if you can find any.

Love this band... they are awesome ... I like both versions. My favorite song of theirs is "Fear"... but if you really want to feel them and the music then you need to watch "Inside the Fire"... where you will feel the song... though it makes me cry I still love the song.

I love me some disturbed, I’m not ashamed to admit that I was going through a punk rock phase in middle school, everyone has at some point, I’ve grown up but I still listen to it and the 80’s of course, it’s the best.

Disturbed's version of this song hits home. My Dad liked the band's version of "Sound of Silence." It reminded him to take a breath and live. Thank you. You would have been been a cool friend in highschool. I can see you in the back of an El Camino rocking to Pink Floyd.

Another good one is 10,000 fists live by disturbed. When you're at the concert with 15k people and that song plays, it's a feeling that is hard to put into words!

The message is timeless. A part of me hates that I helped my son edit a video setting this in ancient Rome, China, Japan, some African conflicts. It is just as relevant.

Just to add a little more info for those that care this video was animated by the one and only Todd McFarlane who also animated a few other disturbed music videos and did the HBO version of the animated Spawn cartoon as he is the writer and artist of Spawn and more.

Every generation thinks their time is particular in its problems, and every generation thinks they have the solution, but ... as you say... this song is still just as relevant today as the 80s, and it will be relevant in 100 years, and "our generation is going to fix it" is a fantasy that people were probably telling themselves in the stone age, and it isn't likely to go away when we become an interstellar species either.
@terrex284 жыл бұрын
Those quotes are "Money is the ROOT of all Evil" and "LOVE makes the world go around". I like how Disturbed made this song darker, the message is definitely still relevant to the troubles today. Genisis' video was more a humorous satire but the message is still a strong one. Still a good one.

Dang! I Was comparing them, harshly mind you! But once again Disturbed does a fantastic job bringing an old song to a younger generation. With respect for its creator and emphasis on the message! Brilliant and greatly appreciated! Well done!

Did you know that every single puppet from the original Genesis video was based on real people alive at that time (politicians, world leaders, celebrities and the band themselves - including Phil Collins). I agree the harder edge and professional illustration/ animation of Disturbed's video makes the song alittle more entertaining and have more punch . New reaction request: Lenny Kravitz - "It Ain't Over 'Til It's Over", "Let Love Rule", "Believe", "Fly Away", "Always On the Run" and "Rock and Roll Is Dead". I think you'll dig him.
