I love every cover mentioned in this thread. Hurt and this song being my favorite two. However, just thought of something. Doesn’t Unchained Melody count as a cover? The original was 2x faster and sung in the 50’s by three different artists, I believe. Then this became the most beloved songs of the last 70 years…

Hi guys, I really love this version of the song. David Draiman is a trained cantor, which may explain some of his power, but you still have to have the voice. I think his voice gives this song the gravitas that the words convey. If you're curious as to what disturbed sounds like, listen to "Down With The Sickness" They also do a great cover of Sting's "If I Ever Lose My Faith In You".

Even though it was edited with a tiny bit of auto-tune afterwards it is still one of the best proformances of all time due to David being so sick that he was helped from lying on a couch to the stool on stage just before his time slot. He was so sick he couldn't stand or walk alone.... but seeing him sit there you would never know. Sitting even added to the setting as a gentleman just sitting telling his story as if by fireside.

This version made me sit up and take notice of a song that had always just been background for me. My favorite version, so powerful and a showcase for David Draiman's voice and technique. You are correct, this is not their usual style - at all - however, if this is something you like, you might check out, 'A Reason To Fight,' (the video) or 'Hold Onto Memories,' or their cover of Sting's song, 'If Ever I Lose My Faith In You.' One of their more rauckus songs is, 'Down With The Sickness.' If you have squeamish viewers, get the radio edit, as there's a section that some find, well, disturbing.

I was disappointed in your scoring of this cover. For me, Mr. David & Disturbed were flawless with this song. Just my opinion of course. How did you reach your score? I was a young teenager with the original Simon & Garfunkel song back in 1963/64 and we (friends) just simply thought it was a real pretty song and missed the message of the song altogether. It was a wake-up call to me with the cover by Mr. David Draiman and Disturbed, giving the message again to roll over in my mind. I think they are the best cover forever & ever, amen! Oh, and I'm 73 years old. Ha!

@Shawnee Dale Grimm Great to see you are still Rockin' and YTin' at 73. Thanks for popping in, I did mention of a couple of other comments, that during the edit I could tell we had under marked this one. Sometimes it just depends on the day and what we have viewed before as to how we might arrive at a score and believe me when I say, we have no real idea how we get to the scores, we just go with our own feelings. Sometimes we are way off, but it get's the comments going. They are just our scores for fun, so don't let that sour your own thoughts on a song and you are always welcome to provide your own score. Hope you enjoy the channel and why not hang around and see what else we have done. Our Sundays are dedicated to discovering American artists and bands that may have passed us by. @gbulmer
@gbulmer 2 жыл бұрын
I'm in two minds about it. After several listens, *8.2* feels about right (see 'Edit1'). I heard this more than a year ago when KZfaq pushed it at me. I think my reaction then was it's an artful interpretation. However, I like a stripped back version; two voices and an acoustic guitar live before a huge audience: 'Simon & Garfunkel - The Sound of Silence (from The Concert in Central Park)' (3m58s) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hKd1o9N3ur2wlpc.html. I prefer that over S&G's studio versions. AFAIK, the song is about lack of communication (People talking without speaking, People hearing without listening). So the overwhelming power of Disturbed's version seems at odds with that meaning of the song; Disturbed's version would cut through concrete. Whereas two voices and a guitar playing to 500,000 people feels more 'right' because the crowd needs to 'shut up and listen' or the song would be drowned out. So that ends up feeling even more powerful than Disturbed's cover. "The Concert in Central Park" en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Concert_in_Central_Park It's a small point in the grand scheme of things, but maybe worth a moments thought? Maybe I think about 'less is more' too much? 🤔😀 Having said all that, I agree that Disturbed's version pulls you in as it builds. It's almost mesmerising. It is so different from 'The Concert in Central Park' version that they've created a 'new beast'. Edit1: I think there's a touch of 'autotune' on Disturbed's vocals, audible on some longer notes. So 8.5-0.3 Edit2: I've just read some comments at www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/simongarfunkel/thesoundofsilence.html _'At first, the album and "The Sound Of Silence" were a commercial disaster and the duo were starting to break apart. But then, producer Tom Wilson asked members of Bob Dylan's band to add electric guitar and drums and the song soon became number one in the US. Simon & Garfunkel didn't know anything of the song's remix until after "The Sound Of Silence" achieved success.'_ If true, that seems absurdly ironic to happen to a song about lack of communication. 😀 Edit3: Have you two got a bag of fish & chips or something? That seagull's still circling 😀 Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to All 🎄

Interesting. You will notice that you're going to get comments mentioning PTX's version of this (strangely enough I suggested it only yesterday on the Sugar Plum Fairy reaction, so it's weird that you've done this one today hmmm). There's a YT debate on which version is better. I even have an ongoing friendly debate with hubby, who prefers Disturbed, while I (obviously) prefer PTX. But. I love this version too, actually. Really epic and powerful. I think I prefer PTX's for two reasons. 1, I'm biased. Lol. 2, I heard PTX's version first. And I think that's what tips it in the end for a lot of people. The one they heard first is the better version for them. Now this is where it gets Interesting (I ramble and take a lot of time to get to the point, but I get there eventually 😉). I was expecting a score in the high 9's, so now I'm very interested to see where you place PTX when you get to them (which I'm not expecting to be anytime soon btw, I don't think you'll do the same song too close together after your Mohemian madness of the last two months). BUT. I think you may put PTX a little higher, which would disprove my theory of people liking the version they heard first best. And THAT is what makes this interesting to me. Go forth, BPR, and prove (or disprove) my theory (at some point in the future). 😁

@EnderOllie That is very interesting indeed. Having watched this back during the editing, I would say we under scored this one, it should have been a 9 at least. Maybe we had done quite a few before we got to this one, than can happen and your judgment calls get a bit out of line. We will probably leave a gap before doing a follow up from PTX, just to give it some time between each version. What we found with doing so many BR is a row, you sort it will the song along to the best parts or if it's not a great version for the end!! We are going to be doing some things different after New Year, just to try out some new ideas, so stay tuned for that. Good news on the days off!!!

Love this band... as well Godsmack... also a good band. But if you really want to hear them I would suggest "Inside the Fire" and "The Vengeful One"... both awesome songs by Disturbed. My personal favorite is still "Fear". But that is me. But great band.

HOW can we take you two Brits seriously if you have not even reacted to Phil Collins live version of 'In the Air Tonight'? (you may have heard of Phil, a London native)

@rk41gator How would anyone take us two Brits seriously if we DID react to Phil Collins in the Air Tonight, as we both know that song so well and at least one of us is old enough to know when featured in "Miami Vice" We try not to do reactions to songs we both know, unless they are either covered by other artists. Hope that helps.

There have been so many covers done of this song. But other than the original of course, Pentatonix's version and Disturbed's are the best for different reasons. There's one metal band I know you have never had on your channel is Ice Nine Kills their music and videos are centered around horror movies. Hip to be scared is American Psycho, An American Nightmare is Nightmare on Elm Street and many others

Brit Pop Reacts: I am not impressed with your reaction to this beloved version. Disturbed nailed it. I feel sad that you did not seem to grasp the sheer power and talent clearly displayed for you. I will not be subscribing due to your ignorant handling of this phenomenal performance and I will not subject myself to more of the same.
