Not so fun fact: The first shot while filming each day is actually called "The Jonesy Shot" and was named after Sarah Jones' death. It's meant to both honor her memory but, more importantly, remind the cast and crew to be careful and have checked that all necessary safety precautions for the day are completed before starting. We had an entire unit dedicated to filmset safety and Sarah's story when I took filmmaking courses in college. The second I saw the gurney on the train tracks in the thumbnail, I knew what the accident was.

I remember watching that train accident footage on tv all those years ago, it still angers me how light the director got off. A whole person died due to something that could have been prevented and it’s 10000000% that directors fault. If he ever dares make another movie we all gotta collectively boys him and make sure he fails because he does not deserve any inkling of success after what he caused.

Regarding The Viking (1931) segment, Sealing was one of the main sources of income for the island of Newfoundland (where the movie takes place, also my home), we are all to familiar with disasters during fishing or the Seal Hunts. My 2nd Great Granduncle was a sealer on the SS Southern Cross. The ship sunk off the coast taking the entire crew of 174 to theirs deaths.

The thing that confuses me is that they tried to grab all their gear before running from the train. If they had less than a minute before impact, you would think that they would drop everything and run to the nearest end of the trussle.

With the train thing, i definitely think one important lesson to learn from it is that "just following orders" is never an excuse, and that only you are responsible for the actions you willingly take. If you do something under the orders of someone else, you're still the one responsible, and i feel like if more people understood this then people like that person struck by the train would've still been alive.

The midnight room story is why I can't stand seeing morons on the tracks or seeing "professional" photographers shooting a senior photo or something on the tracks. You people have no idea the horrible feeling of going at speed in a locomotive as big as a house with several cars weighing thousands of tons behind you and knowing there's nothing you can do to stop in time when you see an idiot on the tracks and when you finally hit that person, it's like a fly getting hit on your car's windshield, you basically become liquified... PLEASE STAY OFF THE TRACKS, tracks are for trains and trains only, not idiots. The fact these rats never saw more than 50 years behind bars and never allowed to touch a camera again disgusts me.

A couple of years after we graduated from college, my then-boyfriend (now husband) got an early morning phone call that four of our friends had been in an accident very similar to the train incident described in the last segment. They were taking photographs on a train trestle when a train came around the corner. One of our friends was hit by the train and died instantly, the other three had jumped off the side. Two of the three who jumped died a short time later at the scene. There was one survivor, but he was so badly injured he couldn't go get help while the two girls were lying there dying. He had to lay there, too, and watch them pass away. It was horrible. The story was in the local newspaper. For some reason, my husband kept a copy of the story on the wall next to his desk for a year. Personally, I couldn't bear to think about it. This is the first time I've mentioned it since 1997.
