We got the Sportster running! I wanted to make the 2004+ motor run like a normal Harley and I think we got it!
Disclaimer: This is just an experiment for my own purposes. If you try some of these things and blow your motor up, its on you. Only let someone who knows what they are doing work on your bike!

This is genius. I was so disappointed when I took the primary off and seen they got rid of the trap door. Then when I took that “ignition” cover off I regretted doing all the work chopping this thing up. I never even considered everything would be the same aside from the cover. This has gave me great hope 🙏👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

Just some helpful advice on installing the intake. Some grease on the seal makes it easier for them to evenly fall into place without any pulling or stretching on the material. Also before torquing down the flange bolts, you're gonna want to mount the carburetor to the engine with the backing plate bolted to the motor. That way the intake will be aligned correctly before running the flange bolts all the way down. Without doing so, the intake can eventually crack. Lastly, the flanges need to be ran down evenly, or it could result in them warping and having intake leak issues. Just trying to help.

A simple 'stand alone' ignition is the thunderheart one - it has preset maps and you can 'write your own.' if you want to, it also works with the crank sensor to eliminate the inaccuracies of cam driven timing ... it's cheap too !

Hi BIG UPDATE : i tried to do the same operation, confidend about what i would find on my 2006, and unfortunately, mine had cams with no hole in an no dent for the ignition module... I will use that as an excuse to put new cams in it but for some peoples it can become a dealbreaker, so probably the 04-05 get the older style cams, but my 06 has not the same luck.

Excellent video, thanks so much for all the concise detail, we have just replicated your idea on my son's 2007 in New Zealand- I have a question - did you leave the TSM and ignition module on the bike after this ? Can they still be used to power the lights and indicators for example, or do you need to rewire the whole lot? thanks
@ChucksCycles
@ChucksCycles 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I was building a chopper so I didn't have a TSSM or ignition module. No turn signals, etc. And I built my own simplified wring harness. I'm not sure if the absence of certain sensor signals will confuse the TSSM or not. The whole idea was to be able to get rid of all those computers.

Ive done a carb conversation on mine. its a 2015 sportster xl1200 with canbus etc. There's an easy way to do this im using a Daytona twin tec ignition. It works with your stock crank sensor for trigger and uses stock map sensor for the timing adjustment under load conditions. Got rid of stock wiring BCM, ABS module etc etc. Daytona unit is very easy to wire if you know what u r doing.
