I've noticed people's ability to understand regional and foreign accents is related to their own exposure to the wider world. It's easier for someone who travels to understand regional and foreign accents. People who have never left their own village truly can't make sense of a different accent.

Having an accent, yet being good looking cannot hurt. Both the guests were good-lookers, not just the Scotsman.

You'll never hear a person with a Westcountry accent advertising anything in the finance, legal and other professional sectors.

It's ok having an accent, but if you are on tv or in a call centre, etc, other people from all over the country need to be able to understand what you are saying. No judgement though. I've watched some films where I've had to put subtitles on because I can't understand a word that's being said. I've been to a wedding in Scotland and I couldn't understand a word the groom and his best man were saying, but I have a Welsh accent and they couldn't understand me either, it was fun.

Cool. I'm a Filipino and people told me I have a British accent when I speak English. But sometimes they kind of hard to comprehend what I'm saying. But they like it coz it sounds awesome. Lol

Accents are linguistically attached to classism and so this is why there is a judgment upon how ppl speak as it’s stereotypically attaches ppl to societal categorisation and oppression.

Why should he not be articulate, thats a silly point really working class people can use standard english with a regional accent, the ladys is correct its just a bias opinion and wrong attitude to suggest you are common because of your accent this 2023 not 1970 respect.

strong scottish accents are almost impossible for people like actors. the most convincing accent by a film star is Johhny Lee Miller in Trainspotting. At the time he was in that 1996 his accent was very convincing as a east coast/edinburgh accent. Hearing him normally speaking English (which he is) actually was like WOW he's very good. Lots of accents in Scotland though, trying to imitate it is very hard because alot of international actors have tried but certain words or fairly often they sound really weird. Id say in general scottish people tend to talk very quickly with no spaces between words in a sentence. But the same is true of any country. Iv never encountered a welsh or english accent that i havent understood. Wales is unique though in my opinion because alot of them you can hear the welsh accent which is lovely, but (and i dont know) maybe there are alot of english people in wales as alot of them just sound English. Only accent that can be tricky is Ireland, well again lots of accents, but certain Irish accents are very quick. But all of the uk has hundreds of different accents. a good example of strong scottish eastcoast would be "Adinakenwityerdaenpal. even at that every 2nd or 3rd person in Scotland is English nowadays and that'l grow in the future, the country will become more anglicized so probs in decades time It will still be called Scotland but basically become Northen england then they will just probably call scotland and england Britain instead of Scotland or England. That will take a long time to happen though. Im happy and like the UK but americans seem to think England is the UK and the UK is England, thats annoying. And poor wales dont even get a nod on the UK Flag which is a shame.

As long as you're easily understood, and using the appropriate formality (e.g dropping slang in interviews), then you'll be fine

I think whatever language you speak, accents are a huge issue usually connects the person to a certain class. But to everyone their own. By the way, Scotch accent sounds charming compared to some others, in my opinion 🤷🏻‍♀️

Accents are more important for ethnic minorities as you will not get a decent job if you have a common accent, those with accents in positions of power got there through their networks, we live in a classist society that’s how we operate, I watched the news & had middle class mates to improve & get rid of my East Midlands accent & not call lunch dinner & my income improved dramatically- facts

I can not usually understand a word Scottish people say, not in call centers anyway lol but this guy was fine! As a female i love the Irish accent on a man and the welsh actually think they are both lovely, quite like the northern twang as well! The 2 accents i hate most of all is Liverpudlians and Brummys, no offense to anyone i just cannot stand them, could not be around then for long! Not keen on strong cockney either lol I don't really have an accent, and i am not just saying it from my point of view, no one can ever tell where i am from, and just say i don't really have an accent, some say i sound a little posh, but i seriously do not lol

Yeah...i think what's not being said here is "posh" and "Queen's English" as the kind to "get ahead" with i.e.taking elocution lessons, particularly if you're planning on working for the BBC. Such accentphobes the Brits are, unlike anything I've ever encountered. I mean, there's literally ever so many accents in the English language...
