Same rule goes when your flying with the gliders and I don`t mean RC ones, and the way we check at the airfield the wind direction is...grab a bit of grass throw it up in the air and you will see where the wind is coming from.

For any newer pilots multiple mistakes were made here 1. He didn't check wind direction, you always want to fly out against it and fly home with it. 2. Sports mode. For long range flights you want to stay in normal, less drain on your battery and you actually cover more distance. 3. He was recording, again, this drains battery, not something to do when hoping to god you make it home

Ok ! lol firstly i'm no drone pilot however I am a pilot. I noticed you returned averaging 150' of altitude. For something as small as a drone the effects of wind would be severe. On a normal basis, winds increase with height. As you had a clear run back with no obstructions you probably should of descended to a much lower altitude, the winds may of been at a lesser velocity. Secondly anytime one carries out a range test it's a good idea to use an app such as "Windy" as so you can determine if there could possibly be a headwind on your return trip. Regardless, I loved your video, keep up the good work.

this is why you should use metric system. You can quickly divide the distance in meters by the the speed in m/s and get seconds you need to return, which you can compare with what you have left on the battery. In case the numbers are stacked against you, you'll have plenty of time to plan for an emergency landing.

There are a lot of critiques in these comments, but as someone awaiting his Mavic Air who assumed the best way to do a range test was sports mode, I'm glad you mad this video. I'm in a suburban/urban area, so I likely wouldn't get far enough to not come back, even on sports mode - but you never know. And I probably will test the range elsewhere too. So I appreciate you telling this story even at the risk of embarrassment!

You could of gone further and came back if you didn’t use sport mode. That’s what’s drained the battery in the first place. It’s not efficient in sport mode creating more drag too.

Everyone can do something different and better afterward. Don t beat urself over it. In emergency hardly anything goes ideally - that's why emergency and even military practice a lot in mocked situation to get better in real situation. In this case it actually went well most people would have lowered and ended up in water. Try to head for land a probably stuck in a tree. It still crazy how fast that battery started drain at 30%.

This is a good reminder that a battery isn't like a tank of gas. In a car, if you drive 200mi on half a tank of gas, the second half will get you about the same 200mi. Batteries are very different. The amount of voltage/power the battery puts out will stay pretty much the same until it reaches 45-35%, at which point it drops of really fast. This is why drones loose speed, and their ability to fight the wind when the batteries get low. As a rule of thumb, if you think of a battery like a tank of gas, if the first 50% gives you 200mi, the last 50% will only give you around 100mi. This is why, during range tests, the drone normally wants to return to home when the battery is between 70-60%. Treat 66% as the half way empty point. On a non windy day, if the drone reaches 3mi at 66%, it only has another 3mi left in it.

Having over 100 hours flight time I would have checked my wind direction and speed first. Then "sport mode" is the worse ever to flight away in. Always use then for return if you must but then think ahead and realize that the first priority is ALWAYS getting home. Sport mode should never be used for anything as it just kills your battery in record time. I am sure you have learned but as you were flying I was looking for a place to land as I always do on my long journeys. Just down your craft and then pay someone $50 to take you out by boat. Better then loosing $1,000.00. Did you ever get your craft back? Once to set your craft down then just go to your flight time record and it will have your GPS last location for you. Then you have the settings and it is there waiting for you. Better to use a little battery for surveilling the area then you waste it on an attempt to fly back and fully knowing you can not make it back. What I did when it happened to me was I used the last 5% checking the immediate area for issues like people's land or a place that was posted. Then I landed safely, and marked the area on my map. I had a friend take me out to this remote area and I used the GPS coordinates and it took me right there. I was very lucky but I was shaking as well and freaked out but I panicked once I got it back. Safer that way. LOL... I hope you are flying again and with THAT drone. Pre-plan your flights and use caution and at all costs, NO SPORT MODE unless you are over a football field. LOL. Be safe and have fun brother... We all make mistakes, that's how we learn, right????

Johnny Austin All good advice, I got way to comfortable with it and caught up in the moment! No wind at time of takeoff as it was running right at advertised speed, about 1 mile into it I did notice it hitting 4 or 5 miles faster but didn't think anything about it and wasn't to concerned with over 60% battery..... once I made that turn and noticed it wouldn't hit 30mph I knew I messed up! Hiked out this morning at with GPS was able to find it right away! She lives on to fly again!

Michael Kincaid that's awesome you got it back. when you made your RTH turn and set your heading, I watched your air speed and was truly bummed as I knew you were in trouble and you did too. I heard your voice change and it was a matter of time on you solving your issue. glad you downed your craft on safe ground and were able to recover same. as a safe guard, my friend placed a small gps tracking unit on the port side of his craft. reason he used port side was he took his apart and apparently DJI placed their GPS equipment on the starboard aft and this is the longest distance from affecting their unit. He lives life on the edge and likes to go the distance and not worry about RTH. he likes to fetch I guess. planning a redundant unit on the craft is always good back up. just fyi for ya. I'm over here in Coeur d Alene, Idaho and love my area on its versatility and how many different environments we do have that are close by 4 flight use. Just out of curiosity what state are you in? Well again I'm glad that you got your crap back and you are probably now polishing up your skills for your next flight. if I were you I would seriously look into getting your commercial license and it always helps because sooner or later they're going to make all of us do it. If you go onto KZfaq and look up the information on the test you will find Tony Northrup who is actually excellent on his narrative skills and will walk you through from opening your instruction book until you pass your test. he's a good guy. have safe flight time out there and take it easy. I bet there was no more relief in your whole self then when you put your hands on that craft again. that was all evident just when you hear your tone in your video as you were setting that craft down. talk to you later.

Advise you buy yourself an anemometer and keep an eye out for wind speed in the weather forecasts, especially gust speeds and bear in mind that wind at altitude is much higher than at ground level. Allow for 3x ground level speed when at altitude, and think ahead about what speed your drone can cope with in a head wind. When returning you should have significantly reduced your altitude to reduce wind resistance. Next, you are on 5.8ghz on a range test! 5.8ghz is a far tighter frequency wave, giving better bandwidth at close quarters but not at distance where transmission reliability can dramatically fall off. The longer the frequency wave, the further the transmission signal can travel, and as you have linear antennas in the controller and omni in the drone, you need to keep the antennas level to where the drone is or you will lose signal in -dB very quickly - just a few things to consider there... You needed to switch to 2.4ghz for your range test really. Over water, reflective path is an issue potentially too

Many geniuses on here and criticising, stating the obvious, but... I think the real mistake made was cancelling return to home. When it triggers return to home it does so PROVIDING you let the drone fly itself back as it knows how much power vs speed it needs to make it back. It has already taken into account the wind as it has made these calculations on its way out with tail wind. It is better to let it regulate its throttle, let it decide how much power needs to be fed to the motors. That's what it is there for not because a pilot is not capable of flying drones back

Nick N I pressed return home on 79% battery and had to land it 600m away from me with critically low battery. (4% left). Return home flys at its own set speed and if it’s windy it’s gonna be like peeing in the wind and your gonna pee your battery away and not make any progress on actually getting anywhere

Drone flyers have to realise how wind works .. If you watch a video on hot air balloons, wind travels one way and depending on how high you are the wind travels the opposite way, that's how they move around in the air just buy going up and down .. Possibly, of course testing would have be done for this but if you had changed your altitude returning back home, you might have had a better chance. Definitely something to test out so this can help from happening again. :)

I have been flying DJI products from the beginning and they have honestly never let me down so I have that much confidence in them.... outside of that I live here in Tennessee with a shitload of hills, mountains and trees all looking to lay claim to taking down a drone..... on top of that the lake provides a 58 sq miles of playground that provides a safe place to fly with almost zero interference without having to worry about injuring someone or damaging personal property, I'd much rather lose my drone out in the water and take my loss as opposed to the alternative!

I'm glad you found your drone. The Genesee River ate my first Bebop 2, and it still makes me sad. Nobody needs that sort of aggravation. 12,000 ft is insane distance! I'm super impressed with the range, but not so much with battery life. The Bebop 2 is the opposite. I get over 20min flight time but the best range I've seen over open country is "only" half a mile. Bebops eat a 40mph headwind though, and they hit 60kph. The speed has saved my quad more than once. Now that the Mavic 2's are out, I'm saving for a Macic Pro Platinum to get the best of both worlds. I'm so glad your Air made it over land!!! Congrats. Nice to meet you! I signed up to follow ya. Cheers matey! Happy landings!

That was painful to watch. As others have already indicated, always head into the wind when doing a range test. Also, let the aircraft return to home. It will manage the battery better than you will pushing full throttle. Sport mode is the last mode you want to be in for this. Glad you found it.

I don't care how experienced one is you're going to have one of these days (didn't expect it to be my 2nd flight with the Air) 💩 happens. No wind at takeoff over 60% battery at turnaround.... I should have picked up on that after the mile range the wind picked up as it was flying 2 or 3 mph faster. I got what I deserved being way to aggressive not having a good feel for what the Air can do...oh well live and learn, hopefully someone can learn from my mistakes! A tip for UAV pilots... If you can't read wind barbs, learn how to do this. If you're flying with the wind, it takes twice the amount of battery to get back. If you fly above an open water body, there are different bands of air that could potentially be smoother. In this case, the best chance the UAV pilot would have had would have been to go lower to the water and fly back full speed. Chances are, wind will be somewhat consistent with the wind on the ground.

Sir, thank you for the range test and posting this video. I consider this an excellent learning tool that even your critics will learn from. Please keep pushing the limits and sharing your adventures with us. Super glad to hear about the recovery!

This video was a great lesson in stupid. 1. Clearly wasnt aware of the wind speed and direction before flying. 2. The goal was stupid. 3. Especially stupid without a buddy standing by at the other end for a potential one way trip. 4. Behavior was similar to a gambler, "maybe I'll get lucky and make it". You should have landed it deliberately before critical. You got lucky that there was land near by. 5. The high wind warning was evident from the beginning of RTH. You were unaware of the winds because they were not present at ground level. Never RTH into the wind with low power at altitude, get down low. Your RTH altitude was also too high. Thats also what killed you. I could go on but whatever. Your money.

Can you control it at least some distance beyond line of sight? If so what's the problem? IT'S A VIOLATION OF FAA RULES TO FLY BEYOND LOS ANYWAYS. If your beyond LOS and something happens the FAA can impose civil and criminal penalties. If you're a commercial operator, the fines are greater...

Anyone could have misjudged the distance especially when you’re getting excited and caught up in the moment. So just for preliminary figures you got about 2.46 miles of distance without an extender? I’m not sure how enhanced WiFi works but that’s very impressive for this Mavic Air. I think most people get in the area of 10,000 feet distance (1.8 miles) with the Air and 15k feet with the Mavic Pro.

Jay Robert Sager You learn from the errors in your case your mistake was not to see that your drone was going at a speed in some moments 44.1mph is indicative that the wind is in favor in the direction that flies because its maximum speed according to dji is 42.mph more 200 feet to return for such a small drone to fight in the wind you had to go down to get back in Sport mode was going to half your speed. I congratulate you for knowing the decision to land it in a safe place of not doing so you were going to lose a like that and I subscribe to your channel.👍
