While diving in Antarctica on a National Geographic - Lindblad expedition, biologist Lisa Kelly encountered a 13-foot leopard seal. Leopard seals are apex predators with a ferocious reputation, but she was surprised when this one greeted her playfully, zooming up to examine its reflection in her camera lens.

They got a cute face, but as soon as they look with their black eyes, and open their mouths, to like 90 degrees open, you start to see why they’re apex predators in their environment.

This is why I love this video. Not for just the amazing footage but because the Leopard Seal does something completely unexpected. Leopard Seals have the reputation of being territorial and pose a threat to divers. This seal could have easily tried to attack the diver but she didn't. The diver kept her guard up, as you should when encountering any wild animal, but this seal showed her a behavior that is not filmed that often. It shows you that an animal with a scary reputation can be calm and playful when it feels safe and secure. You just got to give them a chance to show it.

What's really interesting me about these leopard seals is their body shape, length of neck and jaw and type of dentition, shape of the head and placement of eyes. They are quite different from other seals. I think their overall body features, including their flippers, suggest to us what ancient marine mammals like primitive whales and marine dinosaurs might have looked like. The head and eye placement and the size of the mouth actually reminds me a little of the thylocene, or Tasmanian tiger. These leopard seals are really interesting, and what is even more curious is that they are obviously so social and yet they live solitary lives. I think that these divers may seem like pups to female leopard seals.

fiendin281 Ah, I can see you're one of those "I fucking love science.." documentary jockey types, we have scientifically recognised few species as sentient, I am not using my definition, I am using the biologists definition, please keep to facts rather than speculation, this isn't a thesis and you arn't supporting it like one
@Bl4ckV3ins
@Bl4ckV3ins 10 жыл бұрын
fiendin281 Okay, I'm not sure as to the intent of your comments, are you trying to prove in a comments section on youtube that this animal is self aware simply because humans in the past and still in the present do not know every fact about the universe? Sentient, Noun, is used to refer to ones abilities to perceive the surroudnings and it's interaction with ones self, i.e. feeling pain when cutting yourself. Sentient, Adjective, is used to refer to the consciousness and self awareness, if an animal is not self aware, it cannot be placed in the category known as Sentient. I have tried to make this as transparent for you as possible but by simply googling sentience you could have seen that there are pages on its philosophical and scientific meaning or if you are really interested in the topic please feel free to read some journals on the topic but don't post your personal theories as if they were fact in an attempt to educate someone unless you are going to clearly mark them as something you have come up with. The reason I posted mine without such a disclaimer is these animals have not been identified as sentient in terms of their ability to be self aware, I am going off the facts of today in a world where facts come and go, if/when my comment is no longer true fair enough, but until then, unless you personally have finished your research and just haven't got around to publishing it fair enough, otherwise you are assuming your results before having collected data in which case someone probably needs to check them for repeatability, of course, there is the possibility you arn't a scientist....

Robbie They also are not allowed to actually touch the animals in Antarctica due to regulations, which has lead to some frustrated leopard seals as the divers can't take the dead penguins that the seal brings them. There is a video somewhere on KZfaq where a leopard seal catches a penguin and brings it to a diver (still alive), and lets it go right in front of the diver, which it then swims away and bolts towards the shore to get out of the water. The seal just looked at the diver with a confused look as it watched the penguin swim away. The seal then decided to catch the diver another penguin, but wounds it first so that it can't swim as fast, but as the seal lets the penguin go in front of the diver, it swims away and the seal gets the confused look on it's face yet again. The seal then proceeds to catch and kill penguins to give to the diver, but since the diver can not accept the gift, it just starts to sink. Every time the penguin sinks so far down (below the diver's flippers) the seal would retrieve it and attempt to give it to the diver again. Each time the diver doesn't take the penguin the seal's look of confusion begins to turn into frustration until the seal just decides to carry the penguin with it, most likely with the plan to not let go of the penguin again until the diver reaches for it.

Voracious T No, you either call them Orcas, or Killer Whales, there is no such thing as an Orca whale, as Orcas are not whales, but instead Dolphins, very large dolphins. The nickname Killer Whale has done nothing but make people think that Orcas are whales.
@Patchwork_Dragon
@Patchwork_Dragon 6 жыл бұрын
goldenhedgehog9 the nickname "Killer Whale" comes from the original name Whale Killer, since fishermen pods of Orcas literally ripping whales to shreds and eating them. Yes, they are big enough to do that. Its like with Adder snakes. They were originally called Nadders but when people verbally said "I saw a Nadder" or something like that the other person thought they were saying "an Adder." The nickname just changes over time.

How many times have you come across a human? Several hundred thousand? I bet if you came across 50 leopard seals you'd at least get jacked by one of them. Leopard seals, sharks, big cats, snakes -people want to pretend that they're harmless and their risks barely exist, but that's because you live in a cushy house away from anything likely to eat you. Leopard seal = deadly. It's a predator, it eats animals, like you.
