It's not the cave's fault. It's always been fully trained on how to be a cave, therefore it did everything right. So it's up to the intruding human to train itself accordingly to avoid catastrophe inside that well-trained cave.

Hearing you guys talking about what could happen if a cave started flooding, I just immediately flashed back to the Mossdale Caverns disaster. How they decided to go caving that day, even with the forecast for rain, and the sky opened up just when they were going through the Marathon Crawl, leaving no survivors out of the six in there. Absolutely horrible and a good example of why weather should always be taken into account when you go caving.

This guy is beyond lucky a diver by the name of Peter Verhulsel was met with the same nightmare that this diver faced. In South Africa this happened, he was diving with his friend and got lost in the cave, he found a underwater beach sort of say and he stayed there praying for a rescue but the rescue team were only 40 yards away from him and missed him. They later discovered his last message he wrote in the sand to his wife and kids. He had starved to death. God Bless his soul.

I handled and worked around 7,200 volts for at least 25,000 hours over my powerline career and you can obviously do it safely. If you follow the safety rules. I know many industries have tough guys who think safety rules are silly. But our safety rules were written in blood and that changes your mindset on safety rules. Electricity works the same today as it did yesterday and there's something cool and peaceful about respecting it. It has the ability to find your mistakes instantaneously.

I'm in tears, am an empath and I'm also very sensitive to others emotions, I often feel those emotions and they hit me hard. I personally feel the fear, stress, anxiety, sadness, hopelessness, etc. It's one of the downsides of being an empath but can't help it, it's tough. I also feel the positive emotions/feelings, so, that makes up for it in a way. This gave me a rollercoaster of emotions.

I'm pretty sure there is massive unexplored caves given the geography of the country. Guys like Mike Young would have mapped the entire place with you if it wasn't for the actual reality down there... Only for reference, such a rescue on today's Venezuela would have been impossible in so many different ways.

In regards to saying a prayer in place of any safety rule, let me offer this old joke. During flooding a few years back, the police went through the neighborhoods and told the people to evacuate, one old man refused " I have prayed for safety- I'll be alright". That evening as the water deepened- volunteers in a boat came by, " I have prayed for safety- I'll be alright" was his answer. Midnight- the water was nearly to the rooftops, a National Guard helicopter came by, again his answer " I have prayed for safety- I'll be alright" he shouted to the helicopter. The next morning, at daybreak, no house- no old man to be found. He was asking St Peter- " What happened? I had prayed for safety- I thought everything would be alright" St Peter replied " Hey- we sent you a police car, a boat, and a helicopter!"

Hi Gus! I didn't know at all that you were Venezuelan. I'm also Venezuelan and a fellow diver. I think you might have some misconceptions about the current state of Venezuela. Although it's not at its peak it's not as dangerous as you imagine. Many people come here to dive with us from Europe and Russia and we have a blast every other weekend. You should check out a place called Los Testigos is an island on the furthest north point of the Venezuela sea. Cave divers volunteering for rescues like that absolutely restore a bit of my faith in humanity. They have a specific, unique, and uncommon set of skills even among divers, let alone the general population, and the fact that a human life is on the line and they're potentially one of the only people able to safely conduct the rescue means that they'll prioritize that stranger and fly across entire continents at the drop of a hat to to save them. Truly inspiring! Despite how awesome it is that cave divers will do that, the harsh reality is that rescues very often become recoveries (not the fault of the rescuers, at all). So, the best case is for no one go go into a cave who isn't trained and doesn't have the correct equipment. That's one thing your channel has absolutely ingrained in my brain. At the same time, I still want to try scuba someday! (And I have you guys to partially thank for that).

I have 2 points on this one. First, it fascinates me, the brotherhood, guys fly all over the world in these stories just to help out a diver, no questions if they were being stupid or anything. They just drop everything and get on a plane. Pretty awesome. Second, a good idea would have been to have one stay in the air pocket feeding out that rope while the other searched. If he got out then that guy would have the rope and if not he could make it back to the air pocket and try again. They didn't make it deeper than the rope length yet. Of course a better idea is to be trained and not be in that situation.

What amazes me is the pure ignorance of these divers. Was never too much into it besides snorkel diving up to 10 meters but seeing all of this and understanding how dangerous every mistake can be is ... well, I respect the atmospheric conditions. Having in my family a world renowned National Geographic photographer who did this many time I can only say - popularization of certain sports and activities is a problem. Ignorance just destroys everything that you fine people try to promote with upmost care to delivering safety. Safety, for god's sake. A chilling reminder that not everything is for everyone. Thank you for sharing - besides those mediocre videos of top 10. That's waste of time.

Great story! That must be the worst feeling to have to walk away from the cave knowing your husband is still inside. Thankfully it was a freshwater cave, so at least if he could survive the air and warmth side of it, after 3 days, he could probably still have something to drink. It's gross, but if you're thinking this is it, river cave water probably still seems like a miracle.

Pretty cool to see you guys grow your following past so many other diving related channels that are much older than yours. Not that its a competition but i think what you guys do is the perfect combination of technical diving knowledge mixed with fun easy to swallow content with very little gear reviews which is what most diving related content creators tend to do the most (yawn). Keep it up guys.

Love your videos every single time. Big fan here. Your knowledge, skill and awareness specially for cave certification is very important and you guys are saving lives! I truly believe that you are bringing more people to the scuba world with your fantastic videos and promoting the great divers , instructors and dive places all over the world. But for the first time I saw you guys being sarcastic and cocky in the beginning of this video. Keep it real... people that you are joking and laughing about made huge mistakes but they are human beings!

I like how Woody approaches these videos. A lot of divers wouldn’t admit to knowing there level of experience, so humble. He’s the one I’d like as a teacher.

Gus, I see what you did at the end with plugging a previous/similar video! I love that you, and Woody, are constantly brainstorming little things to add to the videos/channels. Im sure linking previous videos will increase exposure! Good stuff!

There is no better friend in this world than one you can call for help and they will immediately jump on a plane and fly 1500 miles to help you. That man is a hero.

I stumbled across a 1981 Thesis about Karst Topography in Florida. Last paragraph of the 80 pages read that Sheck Exley dove my spring to 240' deep. So I lied when I told you no one has ever dove it before.

In a silted out area when trying to find someone you could take down a retractable pole so you can poke around the water out from your own body to see if the other persons body is near you? I’m not a diver, it’s just a thought on how to extend our fingertips to find the lost person using something longer than our arms/hands length

I have been watching your videos for about a year now. I am a non-diver with thalassophobia, who also happens to have a deep love for the ocean. (Pun intended). Watching your videos has only made me love it more and want to get into diving. Hoping one day the love with overpower the fear, and I can experience cave diving for myself. I just want to thank you both for amazing content and for slowly helping me get over my fears. P.S. Octopus are aliens!

It's really quite a trip seeing clips from those classic "unexplained mystery" and "rescue" style shows from the early 90s. "Rescue 911" is one that I remember particularly well, maybe because it scared the hell outta me so many times as a kid.
