This video tutorial will show you how to divide a circle into equal segments using Photoshop CS5 without using Photoshop extended or Adobe Illustrator. This method will work for both an odd or even amount of equal segments. The results look nice although they are Not vector graphics.
You can find some free jpg templates( 300 ppi resolution) of 10, 12, and 16 segmented circles that were made using these methods, as well as some project ideas for using them at www.magicalfruit-tuts.com/circ... I am also considering making another video on how to make pie charts using this method.
UPDATE a follow up video "Make a Pie Chart in Photoshop using the Transform Toll is available here . • Make a Pie Chart in Ph...

thanks for the input. Yes that way will work as well and is a little easier. In either case, the radius has to only be drawn once. Cheers.

Rudy Gold Yes the step and repeat method is quicker. I've updated the video in Feb 2015 to include that method. "Divide a Circle into Equal Segments using the Step and Repeat Method." kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gayIdZOGybHKXWQ.html I do like to go step by step to help the beginners. Thanks for bringing it up as this video is outdated and really should be replaced by the new one mentioned above.

You can also draw a poligon with the same number of segments you would like, position in the center of the circle and draw the line from the center to the edges, then delete the poligon

Just use the chart in the video. In the case of 7 segments you would use 51.43 degrees of rotation for each segment. You can stop after 6 segments as whatever is left is the last (7th segment). If it's off a little, hundredths of a degree difference is not noticeable by the human eye.

This works well for all degrees I have tried EXCEPT when I go below 10 degrees. I was trying 6 deg. (to make a watch face) and the lines keep getting longer and only filling the first quadrant. Any suggestions?

Thanks for your comment. I just experimented with this and experienced the same problem. I have found the solution. It seems that for very small arc angles, the radius needs to be drawn with vectors. So to draw the Radius use either the line tool with Paths as the method NOT pixels. Or you can draw the radius line with the pen tool. I tried both ways and it worked. By the way, You can greatly speed up the process by using an updated video I made: Photoshop Divide a Circle into Equal Segments using Step and Repeat: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gayIdZOGybHKXWQ.html

Thanks! Before you answered I figured out how to do it by going around at 12 degrees, and then copying all of those and rotating them 6 degrees. Worked out well.

This seems like the long way...Zoom in rectangle marquee tool. Create your pixel width with even number. Create vertical ruler and center. Fill squared marquee area change degrees and duplicate layers to create effect. No need for paths...

@MagicalFruitTuts
@MagicalFruitTuts 8 жыл бұрын
+Ryan Walsh Thanks for your comment. You probably have the ellipse tool pick settings set to Pixels. There are 3 choices in the settings: shape, path, or pixels. You should be using the "Path" setting. If you are using CS5 there are 3 icons. You should choose the middle one which has a pen tip inside a square. Regardless of what version of PS you are using, the elipse tool options should be set to "path" for purposes of this tutorial

Sorry took so long to answer. to get specified degrees follow these 4 steps. 1-Duplicate previous radius layer. 2-Open free transform tool Ctrl T. 3-Enter degrees. 4-Choose proper point on ref grid. Accept if good. Anyway all will be explained in forthcoming video named - "Making a pie chart in Photoshop using Transform tool."

how can I cut an arc into 12 equal parts
@MagicalFruitTuts
@MagicalFruitTuts 10 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment. By "Arc", I assume you mean similar to a slice of pizza cut out of a pie. First you need to measure or know the angle of the slice. For example, if the slice was 1/4 of the pie, the angle would be (360/4) or 90 degrees. Then divide the 90 degrees by 12 to get 7.5 degrees. 7.5 degrees would be the angle of each of the 12 divisions of the slice. Follow the video procedures and use 7.5 degrees as your angle of rotation. When you come to the part where you use the Carl-Alt-Shift-T, press that combination 12 times and you should end up with a 1/4 slice divided into 12 segments. Hope this helps you. It's a little hard to explain and really deserves a short tutorial. Test it out first with my example numbers and you should be able to figure it out.

Thanks +1 mmmm strange, alt+shift gives me this color picker when having the ellipse tool selected :\ ctrl-shift gave me the square selection tool solution: I got it, read that you have to press the mouse button first, then press alt+selected (darn lots of stuff seems to work different in CS6 but I'll manage; ellipse tool makes a new layer automatically)

MagicalFruitTuts Alrighty, I'm going to look at it now. I managed to create a printed circle divided by 5, then put it on my wooden circle and drew the lines on there. Didn't have to be 100% perfect but it was still quite accurate. www.fotothing.com/photos/6b9/6b9c8c022e93a8bccdd89655baa7d635_451.jpg www.fotothing.com/photos/705/7052e070d1d46595e520c4dde93d9d98_451.jpg

I have a weird problem... It works when I use 90 or 36 degrees, but when I try 72 degrees, the lines get progressively shorter and the angle/position is off. I think I'm overlooking something obvious... >>;
@MagicalFruitTuts
@MagicalFruitTuts 8 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment. I think I see the problem. The radius line has a horizontal line of 6 pixels and is lined up exactly to the center line. This also will line up exactly with segments of 90, 180, and 270 degrees as they are at right angle to the radius line. Any lines in between,for example a 45 degree radius line will not just cover the quadrant that it is in but also cover some of the other 3 quadrants. Sorry to be so technical. One possible fix is to use a smaller radius line either 4 pixels or 2 pixels instead of 6 pixels. Anyway my Main recommendation is to follow my tutorial "Divide a Circle into Equal Curved Segments Using Photoshop". Here is the link: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gL2jadGSt97DcaM.html at about 2:40 in that video, I deal with fixing this issue. Anyway, you can make your lines straight instead of curved as is done in that video. To summarize, liken the problem to trying to make circle with equal segments of 45 degrees using paper with a pencil that only has a square end, not a pointed one.

Thanks for your response, I did your other tutorial and it worked!! =D I'm still confused as to why my lines were /really/ far off the first time though - and some of them were getting shorter in length. o,o Not just a matter of it not dividing up perfectly...

Here is Broxmaze's original post: Greetings. You make it way too complicated. - draw one line - Press Ctrl+T - set rotation point in options bar - set number of degrees based on required number of segments (for example 90 for 4 segments) - press enter twice - repeat by pressing Ctrl+Alt+shift+T (it will copy/paste the previous line and take the angle into account) - draw circle if all segments are done

Info is good, however narration is .....flat....and way too specific.You don't need to specify '6 pixels', or, if it has to be 6 pixels for technical reasons, explain why. Same goes for anti-aliasing. Will using anti-aliasing screw up the process? You give no good reasons as to why, or why not you should do a specific task.
Adobe is horrible. So I tried the alternative
