This video by Fort Bend Tutoring shows the process of dividing radical expressions and rationalizing the denominator. This mathematics concept, radical division and dividing radicals with exponents, is used in algebra, geometry, precalculus and calculus classes. Intro/Outro by Mark Kelley of The Roots! Thanks Mark!

this very cool. I like your videos! Also, if you want to use a similar process of using conjugates when dividing cubic radicals, this process is called using a sum or difference of cubes. Just like how you used conjugates in the form of (a+b)(a-b), with cubes you can use (a+b)(a^2-ab+b^2) and (a-b)(a^2+ab+b^2)

Hey, your videos are really helpful and very clear to understand. But i have one question, when im solving these type of problems with radicals and fractions in it, what order do i follow? I mean how will I know if I should factor out a number, cancel out number, simplify radical, or divide the radicals first? Also what about BEDMAS rule? do we follow BEDMAS in these type of questions too or not?
@FortBendTutoring
@FortBendTutoring 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, BEDMAS can be applied and it can be frustrating as different problem types are best solved a certain way. My advice to you is to solve as many problems as possible so that you’re exposed to various types so that you’ll know how to solve them when you’re tested.

On number 2 could you have also squared the fraction or would that change the value? Like distribute the ^2 to 6 and to sqrt 2 so then you will get 36 over 2? Then simplify to 18? It is a ‘radically’ different answer than 3 times sqrt 2. May you please clarify for me.
@12degreesnowman11
@12degreesnowman11 Жыл бұрын
I thought about it and you can’t square it because then what happens is you multiply the top by 6 and the bottom by sqrt 2 which is not rationalizing because it changes the value and ratio by multiplying a different number to the denominator and a different number to the numerator.
@carnivalwrestler
@carnivalwrestler 5 жыл бұрын
Great explanations, but I know I'm going to have a problem remembering how to work those roots in the denominator that are cubed roots, fourth roots, and fifth roots, etc. But if I write this comment, it will help me to remember: So as I understand it, if we have a 4th root of 3 in the denominator, we must multiply it and the numerator by the fourth root of 21, and if we have the 5th root of 4 in the denominator, we must multiply the numerator and denominator by the 5th root of 256, etc. Please correct me if I'm wrong. I had to stop the video and go back over that part to understand the relationships of the numbers, but I think I'll get it. I just always have to know "why" something is true and prove it to myself when I don't immediately grasp it intuitively. Thank you for your hard work and caring attitude, you've helped a lot of people of different ages and from all walks of life to learn (or re-learn) math.
@FortBendTutoring
@FortBendTutoring 5 жыл бұрын
In your example of having the fourth root of 3 in the denominator, you would multiply the numerator and denominator with the fourth root of 27 (the result of 3^3 which is needed to make a perfect 4th).
@carnivalwrestler

@@FortBendTutoring Yes, what was I thinking?? Of course it;s 27, not 21, but I guess I was trying to keep too much on my mind and I wanted to get it "on paper" too fast. Plus I was cooking my French toast at the time (excuses, excuses : ) Thanks for the correction and quick response.

When adding radicals, you only add the coefficients on the common roots. The roots are only changed when multiplying or dividing and don’t change when combining like terms.

On that second problem what if instead of the radical being the denominator it was the numerator and the number without the radical was the denominator?
@FortBendTutoring

Then it would be a totally different problem.

On the last problem. when you subtracted the 7 minus a negative 2, shouldn't the demonimator be a 9 instead of the 5 you placed there?
@FortBendTutoring
@FortBendTutoring 8 жыл бұрын
The "minus" sign you're referring to was eliminated along with the middle terms in the denominator in the previous step. Only 7-2 remains in the denominator to yield 5 as a result.

For 15 + 2√2 over 7.... Do we add 15 + 2 or just leave it like that???
@FortBendTutoring
@FortBendTutoring 7 жыл бұрын
Just leave it like that Carly. You can't add the 15 and 2√2 because they are unlike terms and the "2" is a part of 2√2 and can not be added without the √2.

For the final answer where it as -2 sqrt 14 my understanding that part of the answer was generated by multiplying -2 by 14 which is -28, is this correct?
@FortBendTutoring
@FortBendTutoring 9 жыл бұрын
No. -2 sqrt 14 came from combining - sqrt 14 and - sqrt 14 to get -2 sqrt 14. Remember when combining like terms like signs add.
