Jodi Orgill Brown was living her dream white-picket-fence life when doctors discovered a brain tumor. In her recovery, she learned that every interaction strengthens or weakens. You are divine by design, she says.

I think some people are uncomfortable with stories like this, because each of us is susceptible to the vicissitudes of mortality. So they react negatively. Feel compassion for their weakness. It's one we all share to one degree or other.

When you have negative forces working against you it sometimes means you're doing the right thing. Having 100% positives isn't ever really 100% positive. If you don't have dirt your seed will never grow.

Thank you for this! I had a stroke at 24 due to a blood disorder and also went through something similar at the hospital with the staff. To this day the things I cant do that I used to, still bother me and it intermittently causes severe depression. My depression has been worse recently and this popped up. I don't think I've felt this at peace in a long time. So again, thank you!

My wife and I went through some similar experiences. One Sunday afternoon, when I came home after a long day of Church meetings, some angelic neighbors were washing my wife's hair in the kitchen sink. She had recently gone through surgery to remove cancer and wanted her hair washed badly. It had been several days. These wonderful women laid her gently on the counter top and helped her feel "beautiful" (I put this in quotes because, although she is always beautiful to me, she wasn't feeling this way at all) again. I will forever be grateful for the angelic women who came and helped my beautiful wife.

I have a sister with autism and learning disabilities. She’s always been this way. I was taught to be kind to others but having a sister like her helped me take a further step and be an advocate for others. It’s interesting that Jesus is called our advocate before the Father. We are all imperfect, whether inside or out. But whether they be seen or unseen such as my sisters disabilities, they make us human and we each have the opportunity to help each other out and be Gods helping hands. My sisters been bullied and scorned, rejected and neglected but her Christlike example of never judging or holding grudges or being mean back to those who’ve hurt us teaches our family that we can be better and we’re blessed for having her in our lives just as you’ve blessed many with your story. Thank you.

Jessica, "advocate" is one of my favorite Christlike attributes, and one I haven't heard many people in the Church talk about. But it has been standing out to me for the past year+ as I've been reading the scriptures. I love that you shared this! His promise that He will be our advocate with the Father is one of the most beautiful phrases in scripture. It has always filled me with such peace, now it fills me with a call to action. I love that you feel that call too. Thanks for sharing.

I worked with a boy for his entire high school program who had cerebral palsy and extremely high muscle tone. He was mute and entirely dependant on my help. It used to amaze me how many people would fire a question at me that he could capably answer if you took the time to talk to him. They saw only the disability not the intelligent person that he is. I pray for those who live in ignorance of the feelings and intellect of others, although you who have disabilities that are visible need our help, they have a far greater disability that they need help from you and the Lord to teach them to overcome.

This has moved me and made me realise how petty and small my own problems are compared to the sufferings of other people and the trails they have to endure. Thank You for the beautiful reminder that it is the small acts of service that change the world in great ways! Lucas probably didn't know how much he was doing to heal your Spirit when he began to wash your hair; just like the CNA with the cold shower did not realize how her actions affected you. We all have challenges and trials; some are more visible than others. But if we all treated each other as gently and tenderly as Lucas treated you; how much different our world would be! Every small act makes a difference. How many of us have been touched by seemingly small, simple, kind acts that remind us that somewhere, someone cares about us? You are truly beautiful inside and out!! Thank you for your courage and faith and for sharing your difficult journey with the world!

Hi Jodi, Your experience with Lucas reinforced to me that "by small and simple things, great things are brought to pass" (Alma 37). It seems that the smaller and the simpler the act, the greater the good that can be brought about---maybe because no one is expecting any recognition for small and simple things or for doing them to "the least of these". Then the true motivation shows through. And what humility you model by identifying yourself as "one of the least of these"! Isn't that what the Savior did? Though he was more accomplished than any of us, he descended below all things to undergo this mortal experience with us. I am going to share your story with a friend who is a nursing instructor. Maybe he can use it when he teaches about the possibility dignity and compassion in human interactions in the hospital. Thank you. I think you have had a greater impact through sharing your sufferings than if you were just preaching without empathy from a position of comfort and ignorance. I think this will go far and wide.

Thank you for this message, and for being bold and brave in sharing it when you could have made the easy decision not to. I have been recovering from bell's palsy for over a year, while trying to care for my family and work full time from home as a high school English teacher. It has been a long road, and overall I have made tremendous progress. But it can be so incredibly discouraging at times. I cannot express how much seeing your beautiful face and hearing your message of hope has affected me today. I found a kinship that I had not realized I needed.

The last week of my mom's life, I was the one in my family that took it upon myself to bathe her, dress her, brush her teeth, put lotion and chap stick on her, etc. It was a tender and loving service that was very therapeutic for me. She was not conscious that last week, so I didn't know if she was ever aware of my actions, but tonight, listening to this woman speak, it felt very strongly to me like her words were my mom's. I'm so glad I could perform that service for her, give her her humanity and dignity and prepare her body for her funeral. Thank you for this video and the healing and new perspective it's given me to think about.
