Did God create evil?
A University professor at a well known institution of higher learning challenged his students with this question. "Did God create everything that exists?"
A student bravely replied, "Yes he did!"
"God created everything?" The professor asked.
"Yes sir, he certainly did," the student replied.
The professor answered, "If God created everything; then God created evil. And, since evil exists, and according to the principle that our works define who we are, then we can assume God is evil."
The student became quiet and did not answer the professor's hypothetical definition. The professor, quite pleased with himself, boasted to the students that he had proven once more that the Christian faith was a myth.
Another student raised his hand and said, "May I ask you a question, professor?"
"Of course", replied the professor.
The student stood up and asked, "Professor, does cold exist?"
"What kind of question is this? Of course it exists. Have you never been cold?"
The other students snickered at the young man's question.
The young man replied, "In fact sir, cold does not exist. According to the laws of physics, what we consider cold is in reality the absence of heat. Every body or object is susceptible to study when it has or transmits energy, and heat is what makes a body or matter have or transmit energy. Absolute zero (-460 F) is the total absence of heat; and all matter becomes inert and incapable of reaction at that temperature. Cold does not exist. We have created this word to describe how we feel if we have no heat."
The student continued, "Professor, does darkness exist?"
The professor responded, "Of course it does."
The student replied, "Once again you are wrong sir, darkness does not exist either. Darkness is in reality the absence of light. Light we can study, but not darkness. In fact, we can use Newton's prism to break white light into many colors and study the various wavelengths of each color.
You cannot measure darkness. A simple ray of light can break into a world of darkness and illuminate it. How can you know how dark a certain space is? You measure the amount of light present. Isn't this correct? Darkness is a term used by man to describe what happens when there is no light present."
Finally the young man asked the professor, "Sir, does evil exist?"
Now uncertain, the professor responded, "Of course, as I have already said. We see it everyday. It is in the daily examples of man's Inhumanity to man. It is in the multitude of crime and violence everywhere in the world. These manifestations are nothing else but evil.
To this the student replied, "Evil does not exist, sir, or at least it does not exist unto itself. Evil is simply the absence of God. It is just like darkness and cold, a word that man has created to describe the absence of God. God did not create evil".
So evil is the result of what happens when we CHOOSE to draw away from God. It's like the cold that comes when there is no heat, or the darkness that comes when there is no light. The Bible tells us that God ALONE is good (Matt. 19:17) and all goodness comes from God (James 1:17). This means that there is no place where true goodness can be found unless God is there. But suppose there is no goodness present, what is it that remains? Evil remains! Where goodness exists evil cannot exist, but as soon as good is gone, immediately all that is present is evil. So we can understand why God is referred to as “light.” When God’s spirit is present and God is in control, sin cannot remain. It is only when God’s spirit is withdrawn, when God is not in control that sin can appear. Sin is in essence simply the condition which arises with the absence of God. It is that other side which manifests itself whenever the presence of God is withdrawn.

Now let me say this, is it possible to take nothing & create a book with Intricate pages & colorful pictures & complex sentences. Is it possible to create a book like that from nothing. No it is not. So what is DNA, DNA is OUR book, full of complex instructions to create us, it’s not possible to create that from nothing which means there has to be a god, & in the Bible it says, “if you seek god you will find him” so if you haven’t yet keep looking because he is there I love you

Im atheist, but the teacher is wrong to deny religion. There are two types of atheists, positive and negative. A negative atheist is someone who deny's religion and discriminates you for it. Then, there is a positive one. They, although not believing god, will accept religion and not judge you for what you believe in. They will not call you a fool or crazy, and all they ask in return is for no one to try to force religion on them and to accept them as they did you. Can you guess if im negative or positive? Id think it to be obvious. If you agree with me about the two types of atheists, please like so i now im not alone in my head with these thoughts.

in General, those who believe in God ( but do not have any shape or form to prove it physically ) believe there is something beyond the physical and believe ( or should anyway ) that our soul is what God made in his image and is what makes humans sapient and the other animals just sentient ( there is a huge difference within a being that is just sentient and another being who is both sentient and sapient )............... meanwhile a true atheist ( one who believes God DOES NOT EXIST- that there is nothing beyond the physical, not to be confused with people who think is possible that something outside of the physical MIGHT EXIST but will see it as non-existent until a way is found to sense it or prove it ) sees the physical as the only way to prove things and feels that the way the Human brain has "evolved" is what makes humans sapient and superior to the other animals which are just sentient, and believe other animals might evolve their brains and become sapient someday. But I prefer someone who is an atheist and follows the golden rule than someone who believes in God who is good, but decides to go against God and says blasphemy about God and do evil for the joy of it.

Well this is not correct, they changed the conversation a little and so the meaning changed by A LOT. It is mostly true until where he stopped talking about cold as absence of heat... See, I will judge this because this is based of a REAL conversion between Einstein and his middle school teacher. You can make up your story but it is not right to change an existing one! What actually was said is that “cold is the absence of heat” and it was applied to the concept of “evil is the absence of good” which Einstein said means “evil is the parts of the universe that are yet untouched by god”. Basically there was no debate on god existence in the first place, the teacher was Christian and made the point that god is evil and that is why Einstein argued with him. The teacher did not pick on him, Einstein just interrupted and said this. Guys, don’t try to change history! Don’t retell it in your ways, the truth will come up eventually!

God is everything good, but people say why did he create evil, well he didn’t. We did. God gave us free will so we can go and choose the good thing to do or the bad thing. If he didn’t give us this hen we would be mindless zombies- not thinking or doing anything by ourselves. What people need to realise is that people choose to do the bad thing quite a lot of the time, and his goes in the media and the newspapers, but when someone does something good people are quick to skim over it. The way I look at religion period is simply that there is good and evil but God is just a representative deity associated with good while Satan is representative of evil, both deities created by humans to have something to believe in. I myself don't believe in God, but I respect those who do. One disadvantage I will admit that nonbelievers have is that we're left with a lot of unanswered or ambiguous answers, such as who or what truly created us. But I also feel that that is what humans are meant for, forever asking questions and learning to discover we know so much less than we think we do.

Satan was created good and then he decided to break away from his original design which made him turn evil and cause evil things to occur. Just because God can do all things does not mean he will. He has given all living beings the ability to make choices on their own, therefore what Satan does is not an extension of God or who he is, it is simply a choice of Satan. God is the cause for all things good without God there is no good. It is however impossible to understand the extension of this argument because unlike God we do not know all things therefore we cannot understand all things. That is why we hold on to our faith if you want to know more then look for God and ask him yourself and maybe you will understand why thousands of years later where still talking about a man who died on a cross.

That's no science teacher. That's what a science teacher in a Christian's perfect world would say. In reality, it is common knowledge that cold nor darkness exist, because they are words to describe the absence of heat and light, respectively. We can prove the existence of light and heat through observation and experimentation with the help of the scientific method. Good and evil, however, is completely arbitrary. What heat is to one person is the same to everyone. What light is to one person is the same to everyone. Good is arbitrary. Good is subjective. And evil is not the absence of good. Because you cannot measure good nor evil, you cannot say that evil is the absence of good. And to say that God is good, and to take it one step further and say that evil is the absence of God, would be severely egotistical and misleading.

Cold technically isn't the absence of heat. It's when an object or particles absorb energy from it's surroundings (endothermic). And heat is when energy is exerted into the surroundings (exothermic). So basically, cold can be measured by the amount of energy the object absorbs.

So, sorry but Cold is actually the absence of Heat (energy) and not the opposite of heat.

On my father's death bed he knew that I was undecided on this subject because he was dying and God wasn't helping. My dad said people generally dont believe if they can't see it. He asked "do you see the wind?" I said no. He said "God is a feeling as with everything we believe in" I asked why God isn't helping? He replied "was I a good father?" Yes of course I said!!. He replied "life is a test and I've passed son, God needs me". I'm not terribly religious but I do feel there's something greater. We wont know until we are ready I guess.

All philosophy professors must know the simple rules of argument. With the argument shown it seems that the professor knows little of philosophy, I know all schools must not allow a person applying to become a professor to be a professor without knowing the basics. When having a stand in your argument you must give facts to make a true conclusion. When given with premises, the conclusion may either be true or valid. VALIDITY AND TRUE ARE NOT THE SAME. Validity is just based on the premises you say which could be your opinions, but a true conclusion is dependent on expanded, correct, and educated observations. This is why doctors carefully check you for them to be able to diagnose you correctly and cure you, but if they look at you and make guesses which they think are correct(opinion) then they may give you the wrong diagnosis and it will be difficult for them to cure you. At this point scientists, philosophers, and even other free thinkers out there are still observing to prove the existence of a god. This is why no conclusions must be made yet without having the facts. Before making a counterargument on this, PLEASE DO A RESEARCH FIRST ON PHILOSOPHY THAN MAKING YOUR OWN PREMISES AND COME UP WITH A CONCLUSION

@@riveratrackrunner You could argue the same about Darwin's theory of evolution; all science has for proof of his theory is his writings. But believers of Darwin's theory perhaps see it in nature, hypotheses, and scientific debates, just like believers (whether they be Christian, Jewish, or any other group who believes in a Higher Power) might see God's handiwork in science itself, deep serious study of the Bible and/or other religious scripture, and spiritual discussions. It's all rooted in what your personal preference is as far as what you believe to be true, regardless of any/all tangible or intangible "proof" you have in your knowledge or possession. If people want to believe there are leprechauns and a pot of gold at the end of every rainbow, let them think that; it shows they have a vivid imagination. Let them "discover" for themselves whether or not their "theory" is true or false. (Besides, who can say what's truly at the end of every rainbow? Has anyone ever been?) There's no need at attempting to prove people wrong or tear anyone or their beliefs down, since that doesn't accomplish anything whatsoever, unless you get an icky form of pleasure out of it. Plus, some people might view those actions as demeaning and even unintelligent, and no one really wants to look that way. Also, did Galileo ever "prove" the earth was not the center of the universe? Heliocentrism was seen as "absurd and foolish," just like Darwinism is today, by the head of churches past and present. The only way we know the earth revolves around the sun, and not vise versa, is through mathematical calculations, scientific estimations, and eventual confirmations through space travel. And there are still people who believe the earth is flat, despite all this "proof," which is, again, why I say to let people believe what they want to believe. Whatever truth is out there will be found one day, and we will all eventually realize how interconnected everything is on a scientific, philosophical, and, yes, spiritual level. Hopefully, we can all get along in the mean time.

"It was, of course, a lie what you read about my religious convictions, a lie which is being systematically repeated. I do not believe in a personal God and I have never denied this but have expressed it clearly. If something is in me which can be called religious then it is the unbounded admiration for the structure of the world so far as our science can reveal it." (A.E.)

Even though i agree with the professor. He really shouldn't have picked on this student just because he believes in something.

Its a great example the brain to GOD because we can only touch feel see or smell our brain through some processes so is how we can see GOD, knowing that you have a brain without seeing is a mystery but you still have faith that you have brain so is it with the existence of GOD is still a mystery our way of thinking is just limited because we are under sin as i have heard we only use 5% of our brain power so if we overcome sin then GOD opens our minds and unveil the mystery of his existence the same way we do a ct scan or breaking our skull to see if we have a brain

hey im everything Bea Gamboa well your probably wrong. We humans use 100% of our brain. Using 5% is a myth. To keep us alive our brain should 100%. Have you ever heard of subconscious mind? Thats what keeping you alive.

I just got my licence as a teacher major in biology and i would never teach atheism in science class. Im an atheist but i value the freedom of students to chose if they'll believe science or not. This kind of argument can be done outside the class but never during science class.
