Oh baby! Mad respect to the ambition to direct-drive your weapon. Cheesecake the antweight robot approves! Great way to save weight, albeit at the expense of potentially damaging the weapon motor, I'm excited to see how it holds up!

The hubmotor system should be very durable. I think it would be especially good for horizontal spinners which tend to lose belts constantly due to long belt lengths and low rigidity.

@@JustCuzRobotics - Darn it, you're right, that's a really good use case. I'm in the early design stages of my beetleweight, so I might just do that instead of a traditional belt system.

Love the concept of a just add a blade drop in wepon system. As a new builder, designing a reliable wepon system has been the biggest challenge so far

That is the hope! My goal with Just Cuz Robotics is to lower the barrier of entry into the sport of robot combat for everyone. I think a purpose built weapon motor is the best way to do that going forward.

@JustCuzRobotics your definitely on the right track. So far, all your videos and products have been really helpful. The only suggestion I would have would be to offer some of your boards pre-soldered since most people starting out don't have fume extractors, and it's not always an option to open a window in the winter

I believe that if you want to build and fix your robot you probably need to learn to solder. A fume extractor while a nice to have isn't an absolute necessity. A few people told me they solder in a bathroom with a vent fan going.

Yeah it was definitely Monsoon inspired, but the pivoting body thing was just totally impractical to do at 3lb so it ended up a bit more uppercut in form.

I understand that this is probably a vast improvement and I can’t wait to see what this new Division can do. It’s the bot that competes at NHRL that I am the most invested in. However I don’t like the new look. I loved the old one so much and as much I can’t wait to see what this can do I’m gonna miss the old look.

That is certainly fair. It's a big departure and it sortof feels like completely starting over. But I'll be able to make changes in the future much more easily with this design archetype without it costing an arm and a leg, so I can evolve the appearance a bit down the line.

psyched to see how if the flywheel gearing will hold, and how it will drive with the gyroscopic forces of the weapon potentially cancelled out by the flywheel. Also cant wait to see how the direct drive motor will work.

The flywheel cancels about 60% of the weapon Gyro so it's not perfect but it's still extremely helpful. The rubber disk driving the flywheel is sacrificial and probably will get shredded by the end of a fight but it costs next to nothing to replace.

@@JustCuzRobotics I love the fact that the rubber disk covering the flywheel is basically a weapon belt. It's just using compression instead of tension to transfer motion.

Incredible redesign! Really smart to not rely on your weapon for self-righting and I'm so excited to see the counter-gyro flywheel in action, especially with it intended to store energy! I was away and couldn't catch NHRL this weekend, but I'm pumped to check out some highlights.

I’m redoing my bot right now(actually it’s pretty similar to your 4.0 division which made me laugh when I saw your design) and I have extra weight to spare since my new chassis is gonna save a bunch of weight and I might borrow that fly wheel idea. That’s so smart to try and I don’t think anyone has yet on a bot this small. The beetles are getting to the point where people can actually try stuff like this and it’s awesome

I'm definitely not the first to do a flywheel at 3lb, but maybe like 3rd or 4th? With the flywheel and no front ends, the bot is still under 3lbs, while Fireball 3lb is 3.5lbs with their flywheel, so it might technically be the first

The two UHMW pieces seem to hold by a piece of carbon fiber and the TPU frame, I don't know if it might bend in the middle leading to the friction system of the weapon to stop working after a hit. You're always nice to see go with your ideas, excited to see the results! Cheers :)

There is another 3d print sandwiched in the middle so they are decently rigid setup but it could cause some issues.

Thats fire dude. I was thinking about doing something akin to a mini monsoon myself with invertibility, duplicated sides on a 45 degree angle and programming in a switch the just invert the bot at will, but always had issue trying to figure out what to do with the motor. That hub might just be trick to make it fit!

great design! however, i have a question: since the flywheel has so much energy stored, when your blade hits something and stops, wont the flywheel keep spinning (thus, the knurled wheel) and shred the TPU disc? how does the setup compare to a spur gear design? thanks

You are exactly correct! And that's intended to happen since the alternative would be transferring all the flywheel energy into the weapon and that's a ton of energy to handle. It would probably shred normal gear teeth. The TPU rubber disks cost $0.32 in plastic to replace so I can do that every fight if needed.

@@JustCuzRoboticsoh, that makes sense. have you ever thought about adding a really stiff radial (torsion) spring in the disk/gear somehow? i believe it wouldn't affect spin up time so much and could maybe reduce the amount of energy received by the motor on impact, might also reduce the force of the impact overall tho, idk. a friend of mine used a one-way bearing on a vertical spinner robot, it pretty much nullified every impact to the motor, but it did reduce the damage caused by the bot, it would be interesting to see somebody testing this.

I've only been watching you a few weeks but as soon as I saw the design breakdown, I knew this was Gona rip! Ironically, I've wanted to comment about using counter balance wheel to aid driving

I've probably gotten a few comments over the years recommending this but it is a massive undertaking. The flywheel system adds half a pound to the robot and a lot of additional complexity and precision. It's also by far the most expensive part of the bot - PCBWay made me the parts for free but it would have cost over $150 for a single flywheel assembly out of pocket. I was not as confident in my ability to pull this off until I put weeks of thought into it. And I explored a lot of different ways to spin the flywheel before deciding on the friction/tangential drive system.

Seth, that thing will kick ass. But I have mixed feelings about the design because it is not like any division I have ever seen before. Also, with the right luck and skill, you might beat lynx. Also I have an interesting idea. What I’d Division was a drisk?

A drisk would mean the blades are half the thickness, worse for fighting horizontal spinners. But I could probably make a drisk version of the hubmotor... Would be better for bots with a smaller than 6 inch weapon

It's a 0.44lb minibot. The flywheel system is heavy so in some cases I need it for extra weight at NHRL as they have a 1lb multibot bonus.

Not exactly. The flywheel will slip on hits so it isn't adding energy in the moment of an impact but it will slowly spin the weapon up after a hit

Yes they cancel gyroscopic momentum, but that's different from the kinetic energy delivered on a hit

We might still see some bouncing around, but you're right, I had to sacrifice the 7.5inch weapons I've used since 2019. Synthesis 3lb has an 8inch weapon so I already lost the big vert crown a while ago. But it's okay, Subtraction still has blades with up to 10ninch effective diameter 😁

I enjoy the new division, but would you bring back division 3.0 for a few more matches, perhaps under a new name like Fraction or something? Because I enjoy the chaos Division 3.0 and other tower verts (like deep six) bring. But how much KE did you lose with the smaller disk, and how much smaller (in terms of diameter and weight) is the disk?

The old weapons went up to 255g and 7.5inch diameter. The new weapon is 170g and 6in diameter, but the weapon RPM is substantially faster. V3. Was 211mph and V4 is almost 300mph so it has a similar amount of KE.

As far as bringing V3 back, I honestly thought about selling it so someone else can do that for me. I have a small apartment full of robots and I have 2 almost complete Division V3 copies that could use a new home....
