In this video, I visit Dixie Caverns in Southwest Virginia. Right off highway 81 between Roanoke and Blacksburg, this privately owned cavern is open everyday except Tuesdays (more information www.dixiecaverns.com). The cavern was discovered in 1920 by Dixie, the dog, who got trapped. The two boys helped Dixie get back out of the hole with the help of the farmer. For three years, they dug a way into the cavern for others to see. By 1923, the limestone cavern was open to the public. The tour is about 45-50minutes long in about 55degrees. You will go up some stairs and walk from "room" to "room." The experience and the tour are so much better than any photographs! It is amazing to think that the caverns are up in the mountain. You will also see a fault line, too! When I finished the tour, I checked out their Antique Mall with over 40 vendors, their Mineral and Rock Shop and their Souvenir Shop. There is camping available, but since it was in the middle of the winter, I did not highlight it! #antique #antiquing #picking #souvenir #camping #shopping #stalactites #limestone #limestonecavern #minerals #fossils #weddings #tourr #schooltour #guidedtour #roanoke #blacksburg #blacksburgva #christiansburg #salemvirginia #radford #virginiatech #radforduniversity @dixiecaverns
