And still it continues even to this day. Bogus callers, calling on old people telling them they need their roof replacing; that they've come into money and all the other scams imaginable, and the poor old folk can be gullible enough to accept them as genuine tradesmen. I'm 71 and would never fall for one of these scams because luckily I'm still savvy, but there are still those who believe in these con artists, who really are the scum of the earth. :(

I watched this when I was a kid. The music is a bit more upbeat, it was a mouth organ as I recall in earlier series. If I recall correctly the series was a spin off from the film "The Blue Lamp" with Dirk Bogarde as the villain. Worth a watch if you haven't seen it. I know the series ran for a long time, made Jack Warner a household name.

It's easy to get nostalgic about the bobby on the beat, but when was the last time you actually saw one? Now there are too few police officers, too many young and inexperienced, and spending more time on what is really social work. The Dixon to ZCars to Softly Softly era was probably the high point of British policing.

1:38 There appears to be some sort of "stock airport dialogue" disc floating around British television productions from this time. I noticed that the same chimes and voice were used in the airport scene in the Minder episode "The Smaller They Are" (Series 1, Episode 3).

Sometimes I joke about the local Police as DoDG, but that's what they were - local Police. They knew the neighbourhood and everyone in it. It still exists as such in parts of the UK. This was a chilling episode, no less now as it was then. There are scum bags amongst us - who would prey on the elderly. They need locking up for a very long time but I'd doubt that they'd last long in todays prisons, once fellow inmates found out what they were in for.

By 1967, Warner was an old man in this, aged 71, in my opinion, too old, but then, London Transport were employing staff even older by 1962 to drive trolleybuses, still think Warner’s character (Dixon) should have been retired years earlier, to make way for younger police officers.

@@patrickjwilliams8342 I have just replied to your comment ...But deleted it because your comment was sincere and hope you carry on in life with your sincerity. I will tell you a true story of what happened to me some time ago here in Wales where I live , I was driving along in a 30MPH zone when a policeman jump out in the middle of the road with a speed gun I nearly hit with my car . I was concerned about the officer and went back to see if he was alright....He then booked me for speeding and said he already had my car registration when I looked at his colleague I could him writing my car Reg on his hand ........... Another episode was when I reported someone breaking into a house next door they knocked on my door and said they could not find the house ........ Another example was when I had £7,000 worth of motorcycles stolen from my property, they called but were not interested. I could go on and list more ......I believe the police force was good many years ago but in year 2023 are apathetic..... Another incident was when people were parking their cars opposite and blocking me off. A constable came out and said why not not take your hedges down and have a larger gate ....I could go on and on....iBest wishes David

The chin strap was worn over the chin to prevent an officer from being strangled should a assailant come from behind and wrench the helmet off . Same with Guardsmen wearing a ceremonial busby although less likely in their case .
