I decided to do some work and build a home theater room. I needed a big screen and decided to build it. Overall, it was a fun project and I definitely learned a lot. For me, the satisfaction is as much about the journey as it is the finished product. (I really just wanted to cut some wood with my miter and circular saw and drill holes into the wall.)

You just solved my portibility problem. I'd like a short throw, but want to bring it outside to watch movies in the summer. This screen design is ultra portable with the correct mounting backing on our deck.

I found the problem w using 1x4’s is that u can see the boards behind the screen while watching content. Especially on really bright scenes. I ended up rebuilding my screen w 1x2’s, and putting black velvet on the edge to cover the wood frame. It worked perfect. Great video 👍🏽👊🏽

The 1x4's seem to be doing ok. They're not showing through and the screen is still nice and smooth with no sagging. I've heard some stories of people spending several hundreds on a nice screen only to have wrinkles and sagging on the screen after a few months. I "might" rebuild it to a 135" at some point in the future. For now, i'm enjoying it! Thanks for the compliments!

Great video, I certainly learned that it is something I just won't do myself. Forget your time you spent searching for the screen, then searching for the right lumber, maybe at more than one store. Then all the tools you have that I don't, and being an old fart, I cannot go down on my knees for that long. So thanks for making it clear that I should just go and buy one. Luckily I can afford to now.

You should have gotten an ALR screen to attach to your frame. You have a UST projector. An ALR screen would make a world of a difference.

this is really cool. the problem is I don't own the tools you have, so if you add those to the cost, it makes so much more sense to just buy the Lava 120" screen for $750 on sale.

All you really need is a drill and hand saw. A small version of the pocket hole jig can be purchased for less than $40. Also, you can sand everything down by hand, don't need an orbital sander. So very basic hand tools are all you really need, some know how and patience. No drill? Then a good ol' screwdriver is all you need and some elbow grease. So realistically, all this can be done with less than $50 in tools. Nothing fancy required at all.

Question, I just picked up a short throw and love the video you made. Looks like I need to make a 135" screen, is the material you used directional? Accepting light from the bottom? Lots of good advice, and comprehensive tool list, appreciate your effort!

The roll was: SIZE: DIAGONAL" (HEIGHT X WIDTH)145" (71x126). I believe that should suit your needs. However, they do have larger size rolls. VERY GOOD JOB 👍 I just got the WEMAX NOVA UST, but i can't afford a very expensive screen, i was thinking about making one but I don't have the tools and the experience to do it. I am still looking for a better price on a ART screen for my Projector.

hello nice job a question but the alr cloth is a specific clr for ust and a normal alr cloth because for ust you need a specific cloth not only alr where did you buy it they told you that it is a clr thanks

Love the video. How tall are your ceilings? What is the height of the tv stand that the UST is sitting on? I am trying to determine if the vava on a 120 inch screen will fit on a 8ft tall wall in my house. If so, how big / small of a TV stand I would have to get.

My ceilings are only 8 feet tall and the VAVA is only on a temporary stand that's about 15" tall. But don't use that answer to plan your room! To get all your answers, go to this website and play around with the numbers for the size of the screen. It will tell you exactly what is required for the size screen you want. I'm really interested in using Carl's flexigray material with an ultra short throw set up. Is there a hot spot on the screen when the room is dark? Or even better, an update on your home theater project and some lights out video.

Hi there. There are no hot spots when the room is dark, at least not in my setup. I can provide you a video of when the room is dark if you like but I can tell you the picture is amazing. I found an old AVS forum that talked about an ultra short throw ALR screen from Carls Place but that was back in 2018 and it doesnt look like they carry that anymore. Regardless, I dont want to spend the extra like you said and prefer the DIY flexibility. Just gotta make the time! Thank you

@@garrethafer6866 Glad I could help and let me know if you need any tips on the DIY part. The video pretty much goes thru everything. If you do plan to DIY, be sure to let the wood sit in the room where it will eventually live for at least 2-3 days so it can acclimate to the environment BEFORE you build the frame. Also, the one thing I would change is I should have went with a 135" inch. It's good for now and I'm enjoying it...!

I was thinking building one for my UST but it seems I can't find the really good ALR screen for UST. Carl's has ALR version but I'm not sure it's the right one for UST cause there is also ALR version for normal or long throw. The right version for UST has very specific textured angle to deflect the ambient light. What I read is for UST the best is 0.6 gain

Carl's may not have the right ALR screen available. So you may have to purchase one, but some can be very expensive. What i have is good enough for now.

You need a UST ALR screen to get the most out of your UST projector, the colors on your DIY screen are very washed out. The fabric also reflects like crazy, a UST screen absorbs almost all of the light leaving your room really dark when the ambient lights are off. Your VAVA is one of the better UST projectors, just a waste to see it being used with the improper type of screen.

The screen you see in the youtube video does not compare to seeing it live. It has something to do with flicker / frame rate or how the camera captures the video and translates it on screen. Anyway, i don't pretend to know the exact details of that. The screen does incredibly well and colors are NOT washed out I guarantee it. And although i agree with you that it's not the MOST optimal, it's still very close. With the lights out, it's crystal clear and probably every bit as good as the UST ALR screen. Once I save up enough to justify buying one of those screens, I might do it. However, for now, it's plenty good. Thanks for your feedback tho... Cheers...

You can actually see the quality of the ALR screen in captured footage such as pictures and video very well. Here is my UST ALR setup, you can clearly see the difference between this picture and yours: i.imgur.com/1H0G5yw.jpg Good luck saving up for it though, since they can cost more than the projector 😅

For the video, I shot AND edited the entire youtube video using my Iphone 12 Max Pro. Probably not the best video camera to use for professional results but I'm not a pro, total amateur. I will take a photo of my screen later and you will see there's no color washout. Also another thing I don't like about the screen you have, you can see the bow on the side and the screws that's holding the screen together (not exactly sure what those multiple black things along the side are)? The setup just doesn't look clean to me. I'm picky like that. The screen i would buy is one that hangs on the wall. But your picture is pretty clear.

I agree. I made a 100" screen from some ALR material I bought from China but, it looks better on my short throw projector than it does on my Optoma P2 (UST). I think this is something to do with the angle the projector is shooting the light. The P2 actually looks better on the wall than on my new screen. While the build of the screen looks great, I think you would really see the difference if you bough proper UST material like Malcrosoft but, this would be around $500. I personally would not trust myself to put it on my frame because I think the tension aspect of the material and the grooves in the screen would need to be perfectly parallel with frame to be 100% affective.

Don't remember the exact dimensions. I used this website to calculate the OUTSIDE dimensions of the frame then cut the wood accordingly. It also depends on the size screen you want. Hope this helps: www.projectorcentral.com/projection-calculator-pro.cfm

Thanks for the video. Awesome work. I contacted the company to check if I can do the same, they just told me the ALR screen material they have is not compatible with UST projectors. How is that? did they discontinue what you bought from them? Or you just used the regular one they have?

I don't believe they sell an actual ALR screen. The screen i got is good enough for me for now. I know pic can be MUCH better with an actual ALR, but i'll cross that bridge when i get to it....! cheers!

You should really build a screen with material made for UST projector. You will be surprise by the image quality difference. Sure it’s more expensive but it’s worth it. Right now you no better than just projecting the image off a white wall.

I don't think the one i used was actually an ALR screen. Saving up for one and will have one soon. This works quite well still, but agreed the picture could be MUCH better with an ALR.

Nice work on the screen, how is it holding up? I was checking Carl's for the CineGrey, but cannot location that one. Is yours the ALR type screen? I have my first UST coming soon and want to make my own screen cheaper than pre built ones.

It's not bad. I wouldn't say it's the most optimal for the projector but it really isn't bad at all.

You have a UST projector and please just buy a proper screen for it and you will really see the difference. What you are doing is wrong and most likely introduce hot spots and sparkles from the laser so close to the fabrics, you will see a major difference in bright scenes with a UST screen especially the black levels. You just don't know what you are missing out with this improper setup.

My sister in law is a Rodan and Fields rep. She brought over all these nail sticker things and my daughter thought it would be fun to put it on me... It actually stayed on for a over a week.

That's great you can spend all that time and cost making a big bulky stationary screen that looks a mess or for.less money you can buy an electric screen that at the click of a button folds away 😉

Thanks for the honest feedback. My space is a dedicated home theater so i don't need an electric screen. Also, this screen and materials cost me all of $140, link me to a quality 120" 16:9 electric screen that cost less. Also, besides the cool factor, why is an electric screen so appealing? They're overpriced and will probably break down the road. And are you really going to lower the screen everytime you watch TV, then raise it when done? I just wanna turn on the projector and watch without pushing extra buttons and wait for a screen to lower. To each their own I guess.

@@trendng4016 a particularly bright spot showing up on the screen, like if you held a flash light 6 inches away from the screen. More likely to happen with UST projectors.

I have not noticed hot spotting whatsoever. It's a laser projector and not a bulb so i assume that may be why.

No, it should not be white. It's preferred to be an ALR screen and there are no white ALR screens.

That reflection on the ceiling would bother me. You can buy screen that actually minimises that.

The laser eye is 2 feet from the wall, 13" below the lowest point of the screen. I used this throw calculator to plan the size of the projector screen and media console. Hope this helps: www.projectorcentral.com/VAVA-4K-projection-calculator-pro.htm#calc
