Make your own 2m band dipole antenna that's easy to make and doesn't cost much. It works so well that you don't need anything else!
I am updating my blog weekly nuclearrambo.com . I got better at radio equipment so feel free to check!
Thank you all!

To get a good solder joint you should have cleaned the copper pipe with some sandpaper and used some rosin flux.

I love how the 2meter dipoles are so small. 70cm even smaller. Most folks are making available 70 cm on the same dipole but this is very nice as well. Those SO 239 connectors I don't completely like. I like to leave the crimp sleeve back just a little bit and solder it all the way around. Next time I think I'll drill 4 holes where I can solder the shielding to the connector like the PL 259's. I've had trouble with those not getting a good connection with crimping only. The crimp is not even crimping the shielding wire just the outer jacket. The shield wire is just laying under the shield crimp loose.

How about 22 mm copper pipe into the ends of the tee. Bolted right through for strength. Coax connection point on the end of the bolt.

Nice job! But I wish we will stop with youtube videos proving how great an antenna is by the SWR alone....a dipole in this configuration is NOT 50 ohms, so a 1:1 match is likely due to coax signal loss. The real test is how well it works!

Okay, my vision is not good enough for me to solder, so could you slip the stripped ends of the wire between the hose clamps and the copper tube? And yes, you made a choke, not a balum.

Unless you seal both center and shield of coax at solder points water, moisture enters the cable and corrodes it very soon. Made lots of J-poles with 1.2 inch copper and learned the hard way.

Hello friend we have a question: 1) What is the size of the wire in which you performed the 5 turns? 2) What is the diameter of this pipe? 3) Is this type of 5-turn balm the size of the wire in turns and is it suitable for any kind of caob size? Ie just make the balum and lay the cable without the necessary measure?

The PVC Pipe is 15.24cm or 1/2 Foot the copper pipes are 47cm or 18.5 inches. The shielded wire is called RG58 and I think it has a copper shielding but you should get a zinc coated one if you want to solder it. 73, 55

Thanks for the reply......... Would it be easier to solder the cable to the copper pipes first and then clamp. Then you won't melt the PVC pipe? Do the clamps effect the 'antenna length since they are touching the copper? Thanks.
@onespecialddnerd5933
@onespecialddnerd5933 5 жыл бұрын
I don't think it would be easier per se because a soldering iron doesn't melt the pvc pipe I think. If you want to be extra careful, you might want to do it that way or melt the solder onto the copper. Regarding the second question: no it doesn't because the clamps only touch the parts of the copper which are going to be soldered. By the way if you want to tune your antenna to a certain frequency, you might want to use the tool I referenced below. It will calculate how long each element should be to be tuned to that frequency. www.66pacific.com/calculators/dipole-antenna-length-calculator.aspx Good Luck building!

You would have better luck with the soldering on the cooper pipes if you did not attach the hose clamps - the hose clamps can open up more or completely if necessary. I agree with others - clean the end of the pipe up with sandpaper. Clever idea otherwise!
@julianopificius6910
@julianopificius6910 5 жыл бұрын
You should put a plug (male) on the antenna cable, not a socket (female). Never put a plug - with an exposed tip - on the end of equipment that delivers power. Using a piece of plastic pipe in either side of the T would have given you greater length to strap the copper pipe to (with a second pipe clamp on each side), for greater rigidity. Drilling holes through the flattened end of the copper pipe would have given you the opportunity to use ring terminals, which would have been much easier to solder to the coax.

It is convention to have a female connection on or near the antenna since most coaxial cables are terminated with male connectors. Also this is a strange statement you are making about soldering ring terminals to holes.
@AlessioSangalli
@AlessioSangalli 3 жыл бұрын
I have never seen an antenna with a male connector
@julianopificius6910
@julianopificius6910 3 жыл бұрын
@@AlessioSangalli I agree: on the antenna itself a female connector is typical, but if you have a wire permanently attached to the antenna, a plug is typical. For example, any mag-mount antenna manufactured for automotive use will have a plug on the end of the wire, not a socket. I suppose it depends on whether you consider it a temporary or a permanent installation.
@jfrphoto01
@jfrphoto01 2 жыл бұрын
@@julianopificius6910 Comparing a base antenna with an SO-239 connector at or near the antenna, to a mobile antenna with a PL-259 at the end of a permanently attatched run of coax is wrong. The mobile antenna is set up that way for ease of installation. Imagine having an SO-239/PL-259 connection scratching up the paint on your vehicle. Also, look at a Firestik or a 102" whip installation on a vehicle. The antenna screws into a 3/8-24 threaded socket and the opposite end of the feed through is an SO-239. You then connect a coax cable terminated with a PL-259 at each end, just like a base antenna! Base antennas always use an SO-239 so that you can easily attach a run of coax with a PL-259 at each end as is common practice in communications. The connectors could also be BNC or N connectors.

If you carefully watch the brief segment at the end where he puts it on an antenna analyzer, it shows perfect SWR, but 40 ohms impedance. My MFJ analyzer does the same, showing my homebrew ground plane at 48 ohms, but still 1:1 SWR. I'm not sure it matters much - the impedance will vary considerably with height above ground and distance from nearby metal objects, so the real test is with the antenna in its final installed position.

Well at least you tried . It's a good working dipole but we don't know if it's cut for SSB of fm . That so239 is a weak point I hate using that kind but when you crimped it you need to crimp the shield to the connector, you only crimped the outer coax to the outside end of the furell. I find at vhf and uhf through type N connectors are not only easer to install but lower loss and water proof . Great antenna .

If you crimp a ring terminator on the coax, you don't need to solder it. Or if you just feed the two pieces of coax into the copper pipe before flattening it, though if you crimp it this way you should add some extra strain relief. Also, a coax choke is not really a balun, it's just a common mode signal supressor. A couple clip-on ferrite beads would do the same thing and quite probably cost less.

I would have used a blow torch to tin with solder the ends of copper pipe prior to mounting on PVC form (its easier with higher heat to tin). The 5 turns on the PVC pipe is not a balun. It is a choke. You give no measurements. I guess you assume everyone watching already knows the measurements. Nice to have heavy duty crimpers but how many viewers would you guess have this type of expensive hardware in their tool box? The same applies to the ATU. Loss of audio at 4:48, brief audio on and off at 9:11 to 9:12, then no audio to the end of video.
