I'm really liking my design for this portable airbrush spray booth / fume extractor. It would go great with a portable spray gun, or you could even put together a complete portable spray booth airbrush kit.
This would be useful for anyone making a diorama or doing miniature painting, scale modeling, or really anytime that you've got something small you need to paint quickly.
I used 1/4-inch Sintra, an expanded PVC board. Still, I could see this portable spray paint booth being constructed out of about any 3/16 to 1/4-inch material you can find, except for cardboard, where I would probably go with a heavy three-ply for this application. I don't know, but foam core would probably be a little flimsy for this unless you could get some really thick stuff.
Also, since videoing this, I've also tested it as a dust collector for sanding or using a dremel on small parts, and it works great.
The complete Soldering Fume Extractor video can be found here.
• FA 400 Update - It Works!
My portable spray booth would probably not be the best for Soldering as it does not use a carbon filter, so you should check this one out if that's what you need.
The video where I built my simple but not-so-portable spray booth with exhaust out of a cardboard box can be found here.

Quick update! I've been using this thing for a few days now, and I like it more and more every time I get it out. The only thing I've changed from the video is I've added a second layer of filter material. Not so much to catch more paint, because it was doing a great job there, but for catching the fine dust when using my Dremel.

I like that it is multi-purpose ie paint, soldering fumes dremel dust, etc. I actually have a larger spray booth with an extractor, but in my prebuild, I incorporated a 2" Built-in Vaccum extension from the extractor to my desktop area, to actually remove the fumes. I think your design might be the perfect catchment unit to go with my fume extractor. Keep on building. I like it.

made a big spray booth out of the stainless steel shell of a dishwasher. Some of them are plastic but i wanted the stainless vers. the weight alone was a reason. After i stripped all the useless plastic, electronics, and whatnot off I could not believe how light and strong it was! you can pick it up with a pinky. Whats great about a dishwasher shell is you can make it into a waterfall style with a pump and bucket or a vented/filtered one. I chose a combination and ran the vent into a percolator into the bucket of water to extra clean the waste air (a friends idea) seeing as my spraybooth is in the basement with no windows to speak of😒 but it works great. its also magnetic so i have hooks that hold hoses and airbrushs, even tools. its big so when not in use i pull out the plexi glass that i use for the waterfall effect and can just store model kits in. after use, change out the water, run it for a few more minutes and shut it down and empty the water again so its all clean for next time. i do this mainly to make sure the perc doesnt get clogged. only happened once tho.

That's a genius idea! I'm going to be setting up a more permanent workspace in the not too distant future and that sounds like an excellent solution.

I build a spray booth that fits into the window of my balcony door . When not in use, it lives up top of my shelving. Takes a couple of minutes to fit in place and connect the lights and turn on the fan. Size is 18x14x14. Cardboard box, a sheet of scrap ply wood to support the fan and a cheap extraction fan from Amazon. The filter is a standard AC filter, again from Amazon. Been working well for a couple of years now.

One thing I would recommend is to duct the exhaust sideways so the paint particles that get through the prefilter end up hitting something solid and dropping. That and some sidewalls would make this a lot less messy for people who are stuck doing painting in their kitchen (as well as improve safety from the fan blades)

They're great when you have to space to set them up - which means that I need to take about an hour to clear the table before I can use them... They're also a bit heavy, and a bit of a pain if I need something fast & easy. The design in this video doesn't quite get to where I want to be, but it introduced me to Sintra board, which gives me some ideas.

10" box fan rated at 7m/s and a 10x10 inch air filter. I angle the fan towards the work piece to about a 65-degree angle. You can scale up using a 20-inch box fan too for larger stuff and rattle cans. Sides also help - make them out of scrap cardboard.

Shop-Vac full of activated carbon. You can even put the Shop-Vac in an enclosure to get the sound down. That's my plan. I also got 3D printers, so I'm rigging a Shop-Vac into a central vac. I'm also thinking about going DC, so I can solar power it. I got a bunch of 18650s that aren't so good for my e-bike anymore but would be fine for running a single Shop-Vac overnight.

Thanks for this, worked a treat! BTW, for anyone looking to source these fans (FOXCONN PV123812DSPF 01, 12v, 0.9A) pretty cheap, there is a DELL fan assembly with two of them that is often available on eBay for as little as $10 (for the pair!). It's the Dell HW856 (or 0HW856) Fan Assembly, used in Precision T3500 and T5500 desktops. I believe they all have these exact fans (every one I've seen does), but if possible do check the pictures of any purchase to make sure. Even better than two fans for $10, the two fans are housed side-by-side in a sturdy plastic assembly. It's slightly "knobly", with extraneous plastic mounting/vent bits sticking out here and there, but I managed to use one of those oscillating cutter tools to trim all that away and end up with a perfect rectangular housing to neatly hold+stand the fans on my bench.

I actually considered doing that when I built the thing, but with two 150 cfm fans going at full power, the area of low pressure in front of the thing is more than enough to pull in just about anything around it.

@@bryanshobbies Rob's idea is agreat one. When you were demonstrating your design, at one point you sprayed sideways across the front of it. While the fans may suck some of the overspray towards them, soe of it will inevitably end up on whatever is sitting off to the side.

Thanks for this, well presented. Starting from zero I found a good looking 2x120mm 10 speed 12V or USB powered 120 cf/m fan set on Amazon for $22 and will try 2 layers of poster board to test it as Sintra can get expensive, have not yet contacted local sign shops looking for big enough scrap. Will report back 🙂

I recommend not getting too hung up on the material you use. I think this thing would work well if it was made out of heavy cardboard or some quarter inch MDF. I'm using the Sentra because I came into a big stash of it for free, but if I didn't have that, I'd probably use cardboard, hot glue and masking tape.

Nice! I'm gonna try this out but make mine a bit bigger. I don't necessarily need it to be portable, but I love the way you put this together and hid the fans. I was close to ordering a $80 chinese spray booth online, but I already have some spare computer fans that will move plenty of air... and seems fun to put it together. I had to watch this on mute for now, so maybe you said it during the video, but what is this type of filtering sheet/material called? **EDIT** I see you've already answered this question in an earlier comment... thanks again!

Hi there - very inspirational (thanks) but you skipped over the power details (now answered) and the filter material detail? Also (from someone who sprays everything (aerosol and airbrush!) In the garage doorway, I guess that there's a fine line between collecting the overspray and sucking the spray away from the model - what's your experience now that you can compare?

A match the voltage of the fans, which in this case was 12 V 0.9 amps, so I found a 12 volt 2 amp power supply. Also I only use it for airbrushing acrylics and that's when I'm just doing a little bit here and there and it doesn't make sense to set up the big both. Thanks for picking up on that as soon as I'm back at home base I'll add that voltage information to the description.

@bryanshobbies
@bryanshobbies 4 ай бұрын
Well, straight up front part of it is I'm using an old airbrush I call Frankenstein because it's got parts of three different airbrushes in it. Yes, the paint has been thinned, but I thin based on the thickness and texture of the paint rather than on a formula, so sometimes I use high pressure, and sometimes I lose lower pressure. Basically, I let the paint tell me how it wants to work best.

I saw this in another video and immediately searched for this. HMM. Small portable dust/paint overspray control. Yes, I could set up the big box and fan, but need a quick weathering on a model in acrylic like Tamiya or even craft paints. I end up spraying over a trash csn and that isn't great. I really like this as a table top dust control. I do commercial laser kit production, so designing up a simple plenum chamber like this out of 3 mm plywood will be easy. Activated charcoal aquarium filter sheet will work well to filter. Good ideas! Time to salvage some computer fans.

FYI - standard design practice for collection hoods is to have a face velocity of 100 ft/min [0.5 m/s if I've done the math right] If your open face at the filter is ~6" x 12" = 0.5 sqft, that's a minimum of 50 cubic feet per minute The little imported portable models that everyone is selling for ~$150 have a face of 16" x 10.5" = 1.17 sqft, and have 2x ~50 cfm muffin fans for 100 cfm, or ~86 ft/min, which is why they are not rated for organic solvents, even if you use the dryer ducting and direct it out of a door or window.
@bryanshobbies
@bryanshobbies 10 ай бұрын
Thanks for the information! That little unit is definitely not organic solvents. It's only for acrylics or a little sanding dust. It's also operating on two 120mm, 150 cfm case fans. While definitely not scientific, in the burning popsicle stick test, it will pull smoke horizontally from over 6 in away.
@chemech
@chemech 10 ай бұрын
@@bryanshobbies If it will pull a strip of free-hanging mylar film from vertical to horizontal, it's at least as good as the face velocity on the lab fume hoods from my grad school days. (EHS had us maintain those little tell-tales on the hoods as a positive indication that we had the doors set right) Those hoods had ventilated exhaust stacks up un the roof to ensure that we didn't get recirculation... not something that most of us hobbyists are set up to do. I'm looking to make something that I can plunk down on top of a garbage can or a patio chair for quick & dirty use. I found some muffin fans on Amazon with cfm data for their flows, so I can dial-in what I want there. The cfm varies with the rpm, which varies with the applied DC voltage. Most computer case fans are not rated to go above 12V, but then you need to look the fan's performance data up to find out what they are rated for.
