A simple kimono cover up or a cardigan is a perfect garment for spring/summer season and for any skill level, the drafting of this cardigan is very beginner friendly as it features straight lines and simple shapes. It is also very quick to make one - you will need just about 1 hour and 2 yds of fabric!
HOW TO become a MEMBER of this channel to get access to Extra Videos, library of Instruction Sheets and other perks- PLEASE READ FIRST TILL THE END. Thank you!
Membership trailer here (what are the full perks, where to find them, Apple users - please watch till the end) - • Membership trailer 2022
• PLEASE NOTE: these are not patterns for clothes and garments included in the Membership
• Instruction sheets are a step-by-step written instruction on how I drafted this or that project, so that you can follow along. Instruction Sheets are available as a back catalogue, but there are no new Instruction sheets for projects starting with July 2022.
• The templates are ONLY for the small projects, like a basket, or coaster, or towel wrap and etc.
• I have also created sewing reference sheets and practice sheets, as well as sketches that you can use and some small-scale garment parts that you can use to practice "slash and spread" techniques and dart manipulations. Instruction sheets are focused on the drafting process and less on the sewing sequence as that is shown in the video. Sewing steps can be sometimes written out, and sometimes referenced back to the original video.
• Members Extra videos go into fabric selection, extra tips and tricks, best practices and some additional ideas from me

Thank you, I made a kimono style dressing gown by just extending the front pieces for more ‘wrap over’ and making it ankle length. I then added a belt to tie around. It’s gorgeous and I’m so proud that I cut my own pattern!

First of all, you are my go-to for sewing tutorials, love your videos! Second of all, I don't understand the criticism of your voice, there's nothing wrong with it. Thanks, Alisa, for your excellent tutorial. I made the cardigan using rayon (black with gold flowers and Japan-style trees) and it's beautiful! I'd like to share about two problems I faced, so that other beginners can benefit from my experience. Firstly, I had made the cardigan to end about 5 cm below my waist, but realized, after making the cardigan, that this length was not sufficient to tie the cardigan at the bottom. I ended up sewing on a button and buttonhole at the bottom of the cardigan to hold it in place, so all's good. Secondly, the hardest part of making the cardigan was sewing the armpit area well enough that three seams meet nice and flat - I had to do this a few times over but couldn't get this done as well as you did. I'm not sure why I faced that problem, and am wondering if it was because I did not manage to maintain my 5/8 inch seam width consistently with all three seams, due to imperfect sewing or cutting. Fortunately, the design is very forgiving - the imperfect sewing at the armpit is hidden by the fabric of the sleeve. All's well that ends well! Your super clear and helpful instructions made sewing the rest of the cardigan, from start to end, smooth-sailing. Thank you!

Thank you for this excellent tutorial, I just made a kimono and it's the first time I do a pattern of my own with my measurements. Hi Alisa! This is such pretty and versatile project. And your fabric choice is so beautiful! I'm not sure about calling it a Kimono though, as the it has it's own historical and cultural meaning. Thank you so much for all of your fabulous videos. I made this kimono into a bathrobe length for a Christmas gift and it came out very nicely. I do not usually use slippery or silky type fabrics and for this I used a brand new ball point needle and tried to hand crank to get started, but did have some challenges with handling the fabric at times. I am interested in any suggestions you have for working with this type of fabric or specific fabric types you would recommend for a novice? Thanks and I look forward to trying other garments from your tutorials!
@carolg.6838
@carolg.6838 Жыл бұрын
Hi Fern. I have only used this type of fabric once. When you said hand crank, was it that the top edge of the seam, as soon as you started sewing, was getting "eaten" and causing a jam? I am thinking two things. 1) Use a leader piece of fabric, maybe a small scrap of cotton. Sew from top..or even start sewing a bit past the top edge...to bottom of the scrap. Do not remove the scrap or cut the thread. Now put the top of the kimono seam right up next to this fabric and sew your seam. When finished, snip the thread to release the cotton fabric. This will not be necessary when sewing around the sleeve as you will have fabric in front of and behind the needle. 2) Some machines come with two metal plates which cover the area under the needle. One is for straight stitch only and has a small hole. This should help with your fabric not being pulled into the hole. The other plate is for zig zag or decorative stitches. The hole is wide. You can use this for a straight stitch but if fabric gets jammed at the beginning of a seam, use a leader fabric. (My story..My friend's daughter wanted to make her first skirt using this type of fabric. I said OK but this is not a good choice for a beginner. I decided she woukd line it by cutting the lining piece and holding both fabrics as one pattern piece. Well we ended up with some puckered side seams. I wonder if more pins and a walking foot (often used in quilting) would have helped feed the fabrics more evenly.) Enjoy! It is fun to learn but the learning curve can try our patience.
@fernlegters5822
@fernlegters5822 Жыл бұрын
@@carolg.6838 Thank you for your suggestions. I will definitely try changing the plate as the fabric sometimes sinks while stitching along. Also, I have purchased Microtex needles and will try those as the ballpoint didn't really seem to make a difference. Thanks again for taking the time and for being so detailed.

I have been watching your tutorials, for quite awhile, and I love the way you teach, especially using the body measurements and putting it on paper and sewing it up, your amazing. I finely decided to make this pattern. Only one question, when I add the seam allowance, do I also add to the shoulders and neck. I am very new at drafting. Thank you for your teaching times💓

Cynthia, hello there - seam allowance is needed when you join two pieces of fabric together, so if you're joining anything at the neck, then seam allowance is needed. Same with hem allowance - if you are hemming your sleeves and bottom - then add them allowance. I have a video about seam allowances that may help you!

Can we put this together with French seams? or make it with the sleeves attached and not cut them out and attach? Great idea.

Yessss! I have some Italian wool that would work well for this. I might need to line it so I don't get itchy though... Any advice? Thank you for another great video!

Hello, Sarah! :) if I were you - I would go for lightweight fabrics - as this is a boxy design and depending on how your wool behaves - it might look very square-like. Lightweight fabrics have the advantage of draping and "adapting" to the body and making this simple pattern look like a flowy gown.

Right ... I thought the wool might be light enough, but lining it will definitely make it too heavy. Linen it is, then! Many hugs your way!
