After putting in work aerating, and dethatching and wanting to generally improve my lawn i have found your channel by far the most helpful as i stumble through what to do now that the season is winding down. Worked like a charm!!! Thank you so much -- your video answered all my questions. I have a long narrow lawn with odd curves. Couldn't afford underground sprinklers and the oscillating sprinklers I tried left several parts of my lawn dead. This was perfection -- able to custom create it around circular parts of my lawn without wasting water on non-lawn parts. Used your links to order all parts off amazon except the risers (had to go to box store for them). Video made it super easy to understand and assemble -- even a noob like me did it. Thanks again!

This video is super dope. I decided to learn how to care for my lawn this year versus outsourcing to a landscaping company. After I seeded and fertilized my lawn, I had to manually water it. The problem is that I have 1.3 acres, and that takes me almost 2 hours twice a day. I watched many videos on how to automate watering process minus the cost of having an in-ground systems installed. Your video is by far the best one that I watched. It's very detailed and thorough, but most importantly the information presented in this video is priceless. I just purchased the majority of the supplies for this project from your affiliate link to show some support for such a great video. I thank you very much for this. Keep up the great work, and you have a new subscriber.

Ryan you make lawn care accessible to everyone. For example you give alternatives that don’t need a large budget, but still give excellent results. Don’t own a toro greensmaster? Don’t worry use a push mower for a fine cut lawn etc etc. Regards from South Australia.

Those zero g hoses look awesome especially when storing the entire system over the winter time. I got the cheap 25ft hoses from menards they aren’t great but they work. I set up a similar system last year for my reno using a melnor 4 way hose timer. Just left the sprinklers out for a few months and set the system to run a few times a day during seeding and then backed it off once the seed was established. Each zone is a mix of the hunter MP’s, some melnor rotors, and an impact on one zone. It works but I wish I would have just bought all MP rotators you begin with! Those nozzles are so amazing I really like how even the coverage is compared to trying to shoot a single rotor like 30 feet. Great update video, even thought the original is still very useful 😄

I’ve alway set up my irrigation the same way except that I’ve many sprinklers and hoses, set all of them out in my garden beds where they’re laid out in their permanent positions. I bury the hoses under mulch and use mechanical egg style timers and four way split brass manifolds off of the spigot. It’s worked for me in every home since 1973 and maintenance is much easier. My way of adding zones is by adding garden beds to find places to position sprinklers yet look good.

For large areas you can use the pop up rotating heads. I do 'most' of an area that's over 5k sq ft in one shot. Just takes a little more running time. 3 heads so you can also do "L" shaped areas and what not.

Thanks for this. I want to install an in ground system eventually, but part of what's holding me back is not being too sure about the design. I need to get that right, and I don't trust the companies around here to do it. I see too many of my neighbors with poorly installed systems. So I got enough bodies and heads to do my back yard with this DIY system and custom cut hose. First try at a set up is working well and getting full coverage with almost no overspray. Before the real heat gets here I'll get the front set up as well. Then I can experiment with placement and head settings until I'm certain it's spot on to what I want... then I just need the time and energy to dig the trenches and run the pipe. Almost certainly won't happen until next year... And then it'll be time for a smart controller.

Orbit water timers work well. You can add a splitter to run two sets of hoses to get coverage to multiple areas. Jake the lawn kid also did a video where he had a timer with 4 hose connections. Just as Ryan said water pressure will be a factor is some cases.

I use rechargeable ni-mh batteries which last about 2-3 weeks with twice daily valve activation. the hardware was finicky to set up but once they were all connected, works very well. thanks for the video Ryan. Ryan, I bought this great timer for my hose to help me with irrigation. It monitors weather and won’t turn the timers on if it has rained or is gonna rain, according to the schedule you have in place. I’m also thinking about getting this sensor for soil moisture and a rain gauge. The system will tell you if your lawn or garden needs watering. I think that these two things would be great for someone who doesn’t have much time in their week. The riser you linked to Amazon is out of stock, would you have an alternate that would work as well? I would love to see a review on these two things and to see what your thoughts are. The two said items are the Orbit B-Hyve and the Ecowitt weather sensor paired with the soil moisture sensor and rainfall sensor. Thanks for all you do to help us with our lawns. Looking forward to what you think.

I'm running 350 GPH volume from the outdoor tap and I can only string 3 MP-3000-90 together in a chain using a 5/8 50-100 foot hose up front and 1/2" 25 footers between spikes. My heads are set to 180 span and I have to decrease the radius of the first one to compensate for the end spike in the chain so they are all even or else the final head won't turn. It's a great system though, love it with a 4 zone timer. Best way to calculate it get the hunter brochure with all the head outputs and calculate how many head output will equal your flow rate in a zone. Of course if you have more heads set to 90 degrees, this will increase output down the chain compared to if you try and use 3 heads set to 360 coverage which doesn't work. I use 3x 180 spread because I have large areas to cover but I'm going to add more zones so I can get a few more corner heads setup with 90 coverage which will increase flow rate down the line to the other heads in the large gaps between corners.

Hey Ryan - nice video and great idea. One note about the Teflon thread tape, though. Teflon tape or pipe dope should be used on National Pipe Thread (NPT) tapered threaded fittings like the ones on the nipple you used between the stake and the sprinker can. These are the same threads that are also used on metal galvanized water or black gas pipe. It is meant to help fill the void between the threads which are sealing the connection on an NPT joint. Hose threads, on the other hand, are a flange-type connection that seal by means of a gasket, usually a rubber or plastic ring that goes into the female end of the connection. Tightening the connection compresses the gasket, sealing the joint. The Teflon tape will do you no good there.

Saw lots of questions about water pressure and also though my pressure was inadequate. My rotators would not spin reliably. I found my problem had to do with air in the line. As water flows, air pockets are created by turbulence. Any turn in the hose or connection can cause this. I solved the problem by installing an automatic air release value just before the problem sprinkler head assemblies Ryan shows you how to build here. Requires a 3/4" hose threaded tee, a 3/4" GHT to 3/4" NPT double female adapter, and a 3/4" male automatic air release value. If your heads pop up, but don't always spin... and if you push the head to one side or the other while running and hear a whistling sound... this is the solution for you.

I would change from the Hunter style head (nozzle) to the Rain Bird R-VAN, which does not require a special tool to adjust the heads. In fact, I think the Rain Bird would work better if these were not "dedicated to certain areas within the area to be watered. Far easier to adjust than the Hunters. Toro also makes a great nozzle that is female threaded and will fit onto Rain Bird, Hunter, Orbit, etc pop-up spray bodies.

I did this set-up with a mix of 2 3000s and 3 2000s yesterday. All operating off an Orbit 2 zone timer. Hindsight, I should have just gone with all 3000s because despite decent water pressure, the losses running through 100' of hose to get to the last head is too much and I can't get the max distances. Ultimately, I am going to separate the zones into 2 3000s and 3 3000s to ensure I get the best coverage. I also wonder if using the 40 PSI regulated body is limiting my range.

Hey Ryan, I highly recommend the steel conduit hoses. They are almost indestructable and never kink. Look on Amazon. I live in a desert where it hits 120 and I have no issues. Love the videos btw! 👍

I always feel like a dope being the only one watering. Not sure why. It has been a week since the last real good rain. And it’s been hot here in northern IL. So I was going to get the sprinklers out and water the next couple days. Even though I do get complements on the yard. I cheat and have a company do it. But I mow and keep up with the other stuff.

Great video! Great idea! Question to everyone, I’ve attempted to do this and I can only get two (2) sprinklers on one line. Adding the third there isn’t enough pressure. Any suggestions? Or am I stuck at 2? I have a booster pump on my home but it is probably 15 years old. Could that be dead and I need an upgrade?

Thinking of making this, if I was to go the PVC route and install a in-ground pipe, could I use a home compressor to blow out excess water at the end of the season, would it be powerful enough?

I’d bury the lines (but use in ground irrigation tubing instead of garden hose) and just leave an above ground hookup for the hose from your spigot.

My water pressure is pretty low in my house. I can’t even run 2 impact sprinklers at once. My question is should I install a whole home pressure regulator to try and raise the pressure or would multiple heads like this work better.

So as much area as possible should be getting coverage from two heads? And these heads don't cover 360' so it gets complicated.

Ryan, I recently planted Bermuda seed. I did not rake in the seed but used a roller instead to make good contact with soil. I'm worried I did it wrong. Any advice?
