@@griffwally Most any paper filter is better than no filter. I just found my old box fan, now I'm heading to town for a filter. If I have to, I'll double up on the filters to make it more efficient. *UPDATE.....no filters in town at ALL, so I improvised by placing a white t-shirt over the induction part of the fan (it stays up by itself by the suction) and it's filtering the air pretty well. ;-)

Recently watched a show on CBC that tested using the proper equipment air purifiers and a box fan with a top of line Filtrate filter. The gobsmacking result was the DIY filtered out twice of the unhealthy air pollution twice as good as the $600 Honeywell and $800 Dyson. Good to know what you’re using actually works!

It's not as powerful as I thought it would be, but it works very well. kzfaq.infoUgkxGjG43--gYqIoT4Xkur2PqCrtbKwTv2h6 There are three options to circulate air, and best of all a remote control for us lazy people. Installation was a breeze (no pun intended). It actually took longer to open the box then it did putting the side extenders on and sitting it in the window opening. It's a perfect alternative when you want airflow, but not the AC. Just might order another one for a different room. UPDATE: Bought another one like I said. They work great. Why not have two...

Right now I have two of these running in my house due to wild fire smoke that is very heavy and ground level now for several days. The filters have smoke colored rings on them, and the air in the house smells better. If you use blue masking tape, it leaves zero gum on the fan. Putting the filter on front ensures that all the air going "forward" is cleaned. If you put the filter on the back, the front of the fan surface will scoop up dirty air from the front of the fan and circulate it with the clean air. But most importantly it blocks up the fan and is a fire hazard. I would avoid it. A better configuration uses two filters taped into a triangle shape with some cardboard to fill the gaps. That is much more efficient for the fan and will heat up the fan motor much less.

When the fans get hot they do smell. If possible don't run constantly and keep on the low setting. This is just my experience.
@EricBrennanOrganic
@EricBrennanOrganic 3 жыл бұрын
@@phil562 Good point. I'm trying it on a low setting to see how that work. My gut feeling is that cheap fans (like the Lakso one I got at Home Depot) have low components in the spinning shaft and that these produce the smell. I've wondered about using a bathroom ceiling fan instead, though they are not as powerful as a box fan.
@GanderFlight
@GanderFlight 3 жыл бұрын
Phil when you don’t have a closed system from one side of the fan to the other it doesn’t make a difference which side the fan is on as either configuration will immediately mix with the rest of the air in the room as soon as it passes through. Filter on the front however will leave you with a much dirtier fan that will need to be cleaned more often. And according to my testing filter on the front or back did not heat up the election motors at any significant level.

Just seeing your vid in 2021. I built 1 of these when I was spraying the drywall in my garage with paint back in 2015. I used painters tape to hold the 3M filter (looks like your filter) on an old fan, that I figured would be destroyed and I'd pitch the fan after the job. It was winter time, and I couldn't open the doors to fresh air. While spraying, I wore a respirator, and used this setup. I changed the fan filter several times during the job. It did a great job of filtering airborne paint particulates. the fan got paint on it, but other than that, it survived to work another job!

I made one last night with a new Lasko fan but I found that it left a weird smell in the room where I ran it for an hour or so. It smelled kind of like a new car or something not healthy. I believe that the smell is coming from the motor of the fan as it heats up. So while I believe the design was doing a good job of removing particulate matter, unfortunately I believe it is releasing volatile compounds that may not be good to breath. Did you or anybody else have this problem? Could this be solved with better quality fan?

@@Hboogie182 filters have a one-way arrow because they are meant to be used one-way regardless of where/how they are mounted in the airflow. They often tear or don't work at all if put in backwards. Its in the garage so I don't care how it looks. Non velcro, no platicuffs, no drilling, just physics. Its all good, though. Whatever works for anyone works. This cheap fan ( 20$ or so) has 1 major flaw. **Despite what countless "experts" told me (still do) They STILL have not burnt out or caused a fire

@@GanderFlight Would be easier on voice..briefly :This budget fan design has no frontal shroud.(some do) Looking from the front into the box,position the blade tips in the 4 corners.You will see a (roughly) triangle area (gap) .Look at this fan kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oa5ldLOoxLmwhYk.html This plastic shroud covers these gaps.Has a few design reasons.The one we (mostly) care about is the covering of these corner gaps. These gaps do a few bad things (in our use) The main one is it sucks dirty air in through the front of the fan (through these gaps).This is unfiltered and shoots right back out..also dirties the inside of the filter and fan motor and blades (just cleaned mine, really dirty.) I have some test gear.I have tried quite a few combos and designs.I have actual data =p.Most just guess or w/e As filters (in the back) get better..a higher MERV or w/e rating your filters use...it is easier and easier for the fan to pull air through the front and less from the back. YES, it still works..not as good as you may think. The shrouded fan, a different fan is a MUCH better idea...or you can modify your budget fan if you're clever.(make it a bunch less bad) At the end of the day, are you better off ( and others that have done this ) then NO filter? YES if one cared and was handy,for cheeeep you could rig this up to be MUCH much much better filtering This is better than the 20$ one most use for a few reasons. (still has gaps...allthough I have not seen one in person yet) www.lasko.com/products/air-flex-air-purifier-and-room-fan-ff305/ These have NO gaps,nor do any I have seen at Costco (round) In general round is better. YES a bit of filter may hang over (or not) Still better last, if you use a good filter (say costing 7-15 bucks..I.E. a MERV 14+ or 1500+ rating A pre filter is smart.CHEEEP with max flow.Just to catch the big nasties and prolong good filters life (unless u have no care of cost) Semper FI Gunny

Probably someone already mentioned this in 680+ comments. I simply turn on the box fan and place the filter on the back... easily held in place by air pressure (vaccum) Thus I don't need to make any changes to fan or filter. At end I simply turn off fan...filter leans against fan. Next use I turn fan on and "apply" the filter to the back, again held in place with no physical bracket. Here I use it mostly for summer wild fires. Can run it all night if wanted.

Use a 4" thick filter. The box fan will struggle with providing enough air pressure or "force" to overcome the resistance of the filter. A thicker filter will increase the surface area of the filter and effectively reduce the resistance on the fan. If you need more than about a MERV 8 filter, consider using a different type of fan.

When I put an air filter on a box fan, the motor fried after a month of continuous use. Rather than buying another box fan, I removed the motor from the box fan and used the fan case as a filter holder for use with Shop Air floor blower. I used a 4" dryer hose to connect the two together. I glued a 4" hose connector to the floor blower inlet and attached a 4" hose connector to the other side of the box fan case with cardboard to fill in the rest of the open space. This more complicated set up seems to be working. I test the section by laying a tissue on the air filter, and it does hold the tissue in place. The floor blower also jets the filtered air across the room even on low. I've used this set up continuously for well over a year now.

Cool idea. Just so you know, you have installed the filters backwards. As the filters clog with dust, they tend to get pulled in towards the fan blades. Furnace filters should always be installed with the wire mesh side facing the fan blades. In this way, the fan is protected from making contact with the filter, as it gradually gets pulled inwards with use.

I've been using two of them in our home for quite a few months. We live in California where the wild fires are horrific. Air quality has gone downhill steadily for the last few years creating a dangerous situation for our children's lungs and our own. We currently use Home Depot FPR 10 20×20×1 air filters taped with gorilla glue duck tape to the back of affordable floor fans. This works wonders. The air quality in our home is phenomenal. I will be using these type of air filters in our home for the rest of our lives versus the 300 and 400 dollar hepa versions. Literally cost us 46 dollars per air filter unit and we are changing the filters every 3 months. The savings is astronomical as compared to the expensive units. Wish we would have done this years ago. Be sure to buy filters that filter out the pollutants you're wanting to reduce. Not all filters are created equal. Cannot say enough positive things about these filter units.

@@GanderFlight I believe the J channel is an excellent idea. Only concern we have here is allowing any wildfire smoke to bypass the filter. It's a terrible pollutant capable of destroying the lungs much quicker than most. So we use duct tape to make absolutely certain nothing is getting around the air filter. If we weren't dealing with wildfires I'd use the J channel in a heartbeat.

Genius! (And all the women are thinking about the fragrance attachments that can go on the backs of the filter.) *Btw, will Velcro strips work in place of screws or zip ties?* *** On another note. Years ago my A/C went out during a heat wave. While at the grocery store I overheard the CS rep joking with a customer about blocks of ice people used to put in front of their fans to keep cool. They laughed& laughed as the lightbulb went off above my head. I promptly returned home, filled empty milk jugs with water& froze them. They were frozen by nightfall, enough to sleep comfortably until I could get my unit fixed.

They will know what the J Channel is - but it will come in a much longer length than 3 feet and I doubt you'll get them to cut it for you (as it can chip on the power saws) but you could stop by the hand miter saw station near the molding section and use the one they have provided for customers.

I have 3 box fan filters, one in our bedroom, one in our basement that are turned on with timers. Each runs about 12 hours at a time, the bedroom one all night on low speed(white noise). The third in my shop. It has reduced the dust in the house by 75-90% according to the wife. A frame is attached to the fan, the cord is rerouted to the front, and the frame holds 4 18 x 18 merv 13 filters(removes 98% of dust particles) . Higher number filters will challenge the fan in its ability to draw air through ( cheese cloth vs heavy towel doubled up).

@@GanderFlight I used 4 - 1 x 3 (21 1/2" & 22 ")and to make a box around the fan and a second identical box for the far end. To connect the boxes, I then used 8 1 x 3 x 21" to form four L brackets. Be sure to leave about 1 inch space on rear box to accept the filter. The bottom section is a piece of 1/ 8 luan plywood cut to fit. Cut some blocks 1 x 1 to support the filter. I placed a filter in place, and nailed them on the top and bottom. If less than 4 inches in length use 2. To hold the filter in place, I cut 8- 1/8 x 1 x 3" pieces of luan as latches. These are fastened to the boxes on the sides. The filters are 1 inch and the wood is 3/4" so loosely fastened them with screws. When running the fan will draw the filters tight, and when not the latches and blocks hold them in place. Our bedroom one is sitting on top of a tall dresser with a rug or towel under it. The basement one is also on a tall cabinet, but with open joists could be fastened to it. My shop one sits on the floor and also serves as fan for my wood-burning stove. It has an angled base. It requires cleaning once a week. I have washable filters in that one.

When i palced it on the saw table and ran it, i did not see any less dust accumulation. I moved it up closer to the cieling and fan facing the wall, the dust accumulated was barely noticable. Thats my observation so far but i am not sure yet if thats the way to go with respect to placement. There is minimal windows and I shut the garage door while operating this fan. Is that ok? Any suggestion on location of placement and direction of the fan to have maximum benefits?

I put the filter on the back, with the air flow arrow pointing the direction the fan is blowing. I can't see any reason why not to do it that way, although maybe I'm wrong. The force of the draw on the fan at full speed seems to hold the filter securely in place. I don't plan on using this when I'm not around though. I'm pretty sure it overworks the motor and I don't want to worry about it catching fire.
