After making the first DIY filter, I decided to convert my entire neon tetra 29 gallon tank over to this new filter design. This is the next level, a BIGGER HOUSEPLANT FILTER than the first one!

This is awesome. They're basically bog filters! I've got several hang on the back filters and I was seriously thinking about turning at least one of them into a bog filter. To keep them from filling up with roots, I'll probably put bacopa cuttings in there. I love hydrocotyle tripartita, that is going to look amazing once it starts growing.

@@plantlifeproject That would be a really cool project! I know you could do it. I've got a bog in a barrel on my container pond. It works better than any other kind of filter I have.

That breeder box might be just what I need. I want a planter 'in' the tank. I could turn the breeder box around and drill holes in the bottom for the roots.

Great idea, but most of the water appears to just be going through the HOB filter. To channel more water to the plant filters, first you could switch out the tubing between the boxes for a larger diameter. Beyond that, think about raising the height of the HOB filter so that water can flow downward into the plant boxes. Finally, if you’re feeling ambitious, you could try to build it all into essentially one big box, but that would at least partially defeat your goal of making the system easily transferable.

I used a larger tube and raised the hob filter in the first video and it improved the flow, however a slower flow is still beneficial allowing time for bacteria and plants to filter the water. Yes I am feeling ambitious, currently working on the next step.

Roots in tank looks fantastic, but grow so fast. With rocks in the breeder boxes, plus the weight of growing plants, it must put a strain on the tank glass. All looks very natural given many fish seem to live in brown water with lots of organic material moving about.

I think you should try getting in contact with someone who designs 3D prints or, alternatively, to get a bit creative with cutting and glueing together some aquarium acrylic. I feel like there's a lot of opportunity for utilizing the gap behind the tank that the current hang-on containers leave. The downside of this would be thst you would need a lot of vertical clearance to move a deeper, custom designed hang-on planter but it would provide you with more opportunities as well.

Had a mealy bug problem on my pothos plant growing out of my Aquarium, sprayed the plant with water so the bugs fall into the water. Surprisingly the bugs were eaten by my Danios😅

This is great. What type of kitty litter are you using? Does it matter whether it’s clumping vs non-clumping? There are now so many types of kitty litter available now.

Not sure what he is using but in other aquarium applications it is recommended to use baked clay, non clumping, unscented kitty litter. Other good alternatives are Safe T Sorb or Oil Dry from tractor supply.

Yes unscented no clumping kitty litter. Saf T sorb is pretty much the same thing and works too.

I'm still growing them into the tank. I really want the big growing monstara and pothos and philodendron. Maybe I'll try this later but I'm enjoying the roots and nano fish

Hi ..... do you use any liquid fertilizers for all the house plants growing in aquarium. Without impacting the fish or promoting algae?

Hello i have recently brought a new 44gallon tank and i want to make it planted tank but the problem is aqua soil i quite expensive for me to use so can i use organic potting soil insted will the plants grow.

Yes that will work. It doesn’t take much soil. 1/2 inch of soil then 2-3 inches of sand on top is what I recommend.

Could you hook both breeder boxes to the one filter? I was thinking you could you moss on the screen also.

Hey. Not related to this subject. But i have two questions and you seem to be the plant guy on youtube. 1. What are your thoughts on too LOW of a nitrates or nitrogen level? Mine always read 0 0 0 (Probably more likely like 0, 0,10 ppm but i cannot tell the difference in color). It seems plants are competining for nutrients and i suspect the house plants with roots in the water are sucking up everything leaving almost none for slow growing plants 2. Do you want to touch on the danger of house plants penetrating silicone? Some plants are very strong and big such as Monstera which can penetrate the silicone. I also found someone saying his Vallisneria digged in to the silicone

1. Yeah the color testing is not designed to be precise but to give you a general range of. (Is that periwinkle or lavender, or straight up pink?…drives me crazy) Low nitrogen can be an issue with a heavily planted tank. Slowly adding more fish or other inhabitants can help or just fertilizing more frequently. Houseplants can potentially out compete water column feeding aquarium plants. Root feeders can work well since they grow from the substrate. 2. I haven’t seen plants breaking the silicone but have often wondered about it. It seems to be a rare thing but could possibly happen. I could see plants like Monstera, mangroves, tree species being the most likely culprits.

@@plantlifeproject 1. I tried liquid fertlizers. The problem with those is since my tank is not used to the nutrients, even at half the recommended dose algae takes over in couple of days. I first thought it was a conincidence but it happened twice so now i am pretty sure. I put in root tabs for root feeders just like you said. However the other plants seem to be competing for nutrients and dont grow much and the leaves seem very thin and flimsy. 2. KZfaq is removing my https links thinking i am spamming so i cannot share. I hope you can google the following titles to find some images of what i am talking about Vlallinsneria digging : "Roots grew into silicone, Has this happened to anyone else, and what can I do to prevent this?" Monstera digging: "몬스테라 이 씨1부1랄놈의새1끼" - Go to the first listing in Google search. A monstera root first digged about 1/4inch into the silicone resulting in an uneven tension on the glass. Glass then cracked about an inch lower from where a root digged into the silicone and flooded his house.

@@jkim3323 what kind of lights do you have? Have you considered targeting potassium, calcium, magnesium or iron to address weak/flimsy leaves? Also, consider that certain plants may not have a place in the tank. There have been times I wanted to grow many different plants together but the conditions didn’t allow this without major intervention on my part. In certain tanks, I just could not grow any water column feeding plants. Consider your goals and what kind of eco system that you’re trying to replicate.

@@plantlifeproject I use a strong 4500lumen shop light. I am trying to lower the time it is on. I used to have it on for about 10 hours because of my high light demanding Mangrove. This might be the problem with combination of the excess nutritions when ever i add liquid fertilizers. I have no idea of what kind of target fertilizer i need to add.. Dont know how to test it or tell what is lacking from the leaves. I guess i will just live it like this. Thanks for the insight

Do snails eat cyanobacteria? Cyanobacteria appeared in my natural aquarium and I added some physa snails but I don't know if they eat them.

No, they don’t eat Cyanobacteria. It occurs (in my experience) when there’s a buildup of organics that can’t seem to break down through beneficial bacterias (possibly low population) or other processes. It would usually happen to my tanks that were relatively new or just had a buildup of organics over time. I like to use a product called Ultra Life Blue Green Slime remover after physically removing the debris.

@@plantlifeprojectI'm going to eliminate cyanobacteria using hydrogen peroxide, I've read several scientific articles about lake treatments and they use this product because it decomposes into water and oxygen, so it doesn't leave chemical residues in the environment.

Kitty litter is made from baked clay, which has a lot of benefits when it comes to removing toxins from your water. It has to do with the exchange of negative and positive ions, basically the kitty litter attracts harmful toxins and the beneficial bacteria growing in the kitty litter substrate breaks those down to nutrients the plants then consume.

I think they need to be taller on the back and sides to prevent flooding potential. The water flow needs to be slow in this application to allow bacteria and plants time to feed on nutrients in the water. It’s not meant to move as much water as a standard hob filter.
