I have a suggestion for your sponge filters. Have a progression where you constantly slide them left to right with the newest cleanest filter going in on the left. Take the oldest dirtiest out on the right. I like you're setup and will do something similar with the addition of protein skimmer and denitrification as you suggested

Thanks, we built it to show the process, instead of having one built by the sump manufacturer we visited ;) we wanted to document how to make it and it was great for me to learn the finer tips of making one as well as the ones I had made in my past were much more crude.

3:17, When you pull a filter pad/scrub pad... Push the others forward, and insert your new filter pad/scrub pad last. That way you are constantly rotating them toward the front of the flow.

I know this is 4 years too late. But I watched this video back then and I remembered it when I just built my wife her new sump for the 125 I bought her for her anniversary. That mind you mine is just an aqueon 55 gallon tank that I used for a sump; but I used this vertical filter pad design that you did here. Instead of static ceramic in the middle like you have; I added a top rim overhang to give a Cascade effect into the center chamber so that I could have more of a waterfall effect to help mix for k1 media. Where the water Cascades in the flow cycles the media down toward the bottom and on the opposing side I have an air stone cycling everything back up so it makes a continuous cycle. There's a curved piece of number 5 plastic mesh to keep the k1 from going out the bubble trap. Then there is a small gap for me to add any chemical media that I may want, and two pieces of the eight layer honeycomb polishing pads sandwiched between two pieces of egg crate to keep them rigid; they're also mounted vertically in front of the pump so that the water is polished from any of the Dead bacteria cells from the k1 chamber that may filter through as bacteria dies and gets knocked off. On my output I have a 1 inch to half inch t that splits my water flow between the tank and a 360 gallon per hour UV sterilizer 25 watts. There is an adjustment valve to control how much water flow goes through the UV which is then outputted back to the sump.my water has been so clear since this new sump build that it literally looks like my fish are swimming in air. That vertical design has another benefit that I believe some people may have overlooked when watching this. Typically when you have a horizontal setup the surface area is much smaller as the chambers are typically not more than 8 in wide and this also makes for a pain in the ass when it comes to cleaning because you have to pull out subsequent layers to get to other layers for cleaning. This vertical design gives you the full width of the tank and the full height of your chamber doubling tripling or even quadrupling the surface area enabling you to have more water flow, fewer cleaning cycles, easier to pull out individual pads so that you maintain your biological load without having to pull them all out at once to get to the others and without clouding up your tank while doing so, and a higher bacterial load because of how much more media you can pack in that same 8 in. I wish that KZfaq allowed pictures to be sent in a response so that I could show you what I've done with your vertical design and implementing some of my own designs. The cichlids have been thriving and honestly this has even made it so that I have fewer water changes because I have such a large magnitude of biological activity in the sump with the added surface area but I can honestly say that I have not done a water change in over 3 months and my water parameters are still perfect. The only pad that I have had to clean in that time was the primary pad which is 20 PPI poret foam. I have four pads in succession each separated by a layer of egg crate to produce directional flow. 20 PPI, 30 ppi, 40 ppi, and 50 PPI.

That is a great concept. You have me sold on under gravel filters. I love how you incorporated them into the sump. When you change the filter floss won’t it stick to the blue or black mats, like Velcro? I am wondering how easy it is going to be to slide one section in and out or are you going to have to slide the whole stack out and change what you want then slide the whole stack back in?

cool to see ! I like the way this is designed.. I just built a 210g DIY sump with some neat features, for the 1000g dt I'm building. I was thinking about a cubic foot of Lava rock along with 10 bags of bio rings, 3 gallons of bio-balls, and many pot scrubbies in each of 2 trickle tower.I have a 3ft x 2ft x 2ft chamber in center of sump that will have 2 - 1800gph magdrive return pumps. I'm also running 2" drains..

Former union carpenter with a serious safety tip, never ever ever use radial spinning saws (table saw, circular saw, chop saw, etc) with gloves on! It is a sure-fire way to lose fingers or a hand if you even get nicked. Without a glove, you get cut but your whole hand or finger doesn't get pulled in by a glove getting grabbed by the spinning blade. Wasn't a big deal with the circular saw with the acrylic solid blade... but the table saw at the end of the video was a really bad idea with gloves.

This is awesome. If I were to improve on this, I'd probably be borrowing from what we do on reef sumps... return pump goes through a manifold, and water can be distributed to a number of different places. Most back to the tank. Some through a UV sterilizer. Maybe some through a carbon reactor. With a tank of this size it might be really cool to return some of the water through a hydroponic system, and use hyacinth or something to really polish the water up. These adjunct systems would just return back to the sump.

Very cool, I wonder if when you were cutting the tank if you positioned some 2 x 4’s on the inside where the cut is to stabilize it. The blade would cut right through the two by fours allowing it to make a straight cut without the acrylic bending.

The only thing I would do differently is increasing the size of the outflow tubing so you strangle the flow as little as possible. You put an adapter between the pump tubing to make them fit. I would also build a DIY outflow pipe, think classic eheim horizontal spray bar but much bigger and with more holes.

Great video. Only issue with using your Wood Guide for your Skillsaw is that you need to make sure the wood guide is not warped because the moisture has been evaporating from it. Pine / White wood is notorious for warping in all directions. make sure that you place it against a straight edge first other wise you wont get a straight cut.

You can save the acrylic of the cut part to use for future projects or possibly even of used some of it in this sump. What about using all the same pond filter material making it to where you pull the front filter pad and slide the pads forward, installing the newest pad in the rear... For everybody that commented about the fish in the sump Cory remarked on the fish in the sump and explain how it got there.

I’m thinking of systems like this filter.. ...for this I would consider compartments for the bags...like steps down....one step with the coral on top then bags to the bottom...a wall divider with holes... then the next step would be a bag on top then the coral followed by bags...then repeat steps down & an other divider until the coral is on bottom.
