Finally came to removing the asbestos cladding. Decided to do it myself to save some money. It's actually quite straight forward!
First buy an asbestos testing kit (google search), mine cost about £35. You will get a test certificate back after sending the samples off. Mine had blue asbestos as well as white which is super rare. You will need to supply the cert to your local waste management company. They charged me upfront for the haulage approx. £300 and for the first tonne of waste approx. £300. I had a tad more than a tonne so they charged me a little more once the skip went back.
All in all this actually cost me less than a grand!
I used my hvlp gun to spray down the sheets with diluted pva. I saw this on an asbestos awareness website from Australia. Basically it bonds any lose fibres so they don't go anywhere. It's called a 'wetting agent' in the UK, there are more expensive options if you like spending money.
A couple of rolls of damp proof membrane 1000ga and some tape and you're sorted.
disclaimer, I am not a professional, please DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH!

I know the original siding on my house is asbestos. Built in 1947. I had it tested and came back as chrysotile 12% content. A very common asbestos type. I had debated about removing it myself. The state where I live does allow for self removal at your own risk. It requires that it is disposed of by EPA guidlines. However, due to how close my house is to my neighbors, I plan on hiring an abatement company. It would run me around two grand to hire them. The waste fee is $30 per ton for the closest dump that takes asbestos.

@The Aiden Project🔨 The $30 per ton would actually be just for the dump fees if I did the removal and hauling myself. I will also add they only accept non friable asbestos.

@The Aiden Project🔨 I know. Only reason I decided to hire an abatement team to do it was because my house is soooo close to my neighbors. I didn't want to risk sending fibers their way or incur any liability from its removal.

Hi Aiden we have just obtained prior approval for our barn conversion so are following your videos which are extremely informative as we need to do most of the work ourselves due to budget constraints. Great work on the Electric cabinet is that going to be its final position, many thanks a Geoff

@THE-AIDEN-PROJECT 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Geoff, congratulations! 🎉 Yes that will be it's final position. I didn't want to double spend you see. So it's classed as a TBS (temporary building supply) but it can remain permanent providing you put it in right. The meter remains in that kiosk. It's got a small consumer unit in there for power to my borehole shed, caravan and a couple of sockets. I only have single phase and a 100amp supply. Later the tails off the meter will be spliced into two seperate 100amp breakers that will then each run to the cartlodge and barn. They will then have their own relevant sized consumer units in the actual buildings 👍

If it was me I'd just do it myself. You can usually take it to a recycling centre for free if it's just a single garage roof. Check with your local council where you can take it. You will just have to wrap it twice like I did. Not sure whether you will need to give them a test certificate or not, you would have to ask

@@shares-qg9kw you should still be able to manage them in terms of weight then. In terms of disposal speak to your local skip companies to see who will take it and explain how long the sheets are. Some will have roll on roll off skips with doors that are much longer and you can get the sheets in. Some might let you take it to wherever it needs to go on your own trailer if you have one (like a car trailer). Also, have a chat with your local farmers, I've known some of them to take it because they need to patch up their own barns on the cheap. They will bring their own tractors and trailers to load it up. The last thing you want to do is break it as that's when the fibres get released.

@THE-AIDEN-PROJECT
@THE-AIDEN-PROJECT Жыл бұрын
A single exposure to asbestos isn't going to kill you instantly or anything. If the fibres get into your lungs they bury themselves in and cause scaring etc. Old tradesmen that handled it all the time in the past are the ones that get asbestosis. So I wouldn't worry too much. If you wanted to be overly cautious then you should clean everything down with damp microfibre cloths, then throw them cloths away afterwards.

@THE-AIDEN-PROJECT
@THE-AIDEN-PROJECT Жыл бұрын
The skip firm charged me for a minimum of a tonne so that was about £300ish. I suppose if your local skip firm has a minimum like that, by the time you get the dpm it probably won't be worth it so that £500 for someone else to do it is probably worth it. You could always wrap it and take it to a suitable site in a trailer if you can borrow one maybe. Alternatively you should check with your local council, I know some that are happy to take a certain amount for a small charge as long as its wrapped

Hi, the diy asbestos test kit was £35. For the skip and just over a tonne of waste came in about £700. About £80 for the plastic, you need at least 2 layers of 1000 gauge. Couple of suits and gloves £30. PVA £10, spray machine £60. Masks can be quite pricey, I paid over £100 for my full face one. Oh and a case of beer for a helper 😀 The access platforms I have for the whole job so wouldn't include them here. Hope that helps

my neighbours shed has asbestos roofing me and my son had to go in and rescue a kitten that was trapped under some old furniture what are the chances of us getting asbestos poisoning from the fibres ?
@THE-AIDEN-PROJECT
@THE-AIDEN-PROJECT Жыл бұрын
You don't get poisoned by asbestos, you can get asbestosis which can lead to cancer. For asbestosis to develop, prolonged exposure to relatively high numbers of the fibres is necessary. The asbestos in the roof is encapsulated, so unless you smashed the roof apart whilst you were rescuing the kitten, you will be fine.

@THE-AIDEN-PROJECT
@THE-AIDEN-PROJECT Жыл бұрын
@@v0LcaN_o___ it's fine unless you disturb it because it's encapsulated, even the broken edges. That roof would contain white asbestos which is the least troublesome. The blue and brown stuff is the worse asbestos. It's the last thing you should worry about really, there's probably more chance of him being struck by lightning than ending up with asbestosis from walking into a shed a couple of times.

Oh no, call the cops 😁 Fortunately you don't need a license for asbestos cement, they say you just need to have the right 'information, instruction and training'. Basically make sure you do it properly, like I did. You can read the HSE asbestos essential task sheets (a14) and know what to do. The only thing I didn't do was put asbestos stickers on 🤷‍♂️ but I knew what was in there, no one else should have been on site and it was being disposed of by a licensed skip company
